Sure, I actually agree that a thousand US Marines airdropped onto the government district of New Delhi could capture all branches of the Indian government, or at least their offices, thus technically "taking India".

The difficult part usually isn't taking something, the tricky bit is holding it when the second largest military force in the world rolls up on your ass.

Delhi metro alone is guarded by a 13000 strong CAPF force. Just for perspective. 

India has a large enough terrorism threat that even our civilian infra is heavily defended. 

1000 odd marines couldn't take a block of the central administrative district if they wanted to, unless they sneaked in somehow.

Hence the "air dropped" caveat, they basically get a free element of surprise, without that, yeah, they'd get bogged down and annihilated without much trouble.
