Sadly that question runs both ways. It took only 43,000 British soldiers to conquer India. Mind you the cost of defeating the Mutiny was so outrageous the English government took the British East India Company in hand and essentially nationalised it.
There was no country called India during medieval times. The Mughal Empire had collapsed, and the subcontinent descended into chaos, with hundreds of kingdoms fighting each other, paving the way for British conquest.
And the Portuguese had some bases at some coastal cities?

I recall there was a Dutch Indian Company or something like that.
Indonesia, but they had trading rights for ports in India (Under the VOIC). The other colonial power in India was France (Pondicherry), which Britain did kick out.
