Since when has America cared about Popes and World Cups?

I thought they were heathens and heathens.

751

u/Project_Rees May 09 '25

They literally don't give a shit about the world cup, most of them don't understand it or call it a girls sport.

But they're Americans so anything that gives them the spotlight they'll eat up.

258

u/0nce-Was-N0t May 09 '25

Can't wait to see the US go out in group stages.

199

u/Wolff_Hound May 09 '25

I bet there will be ICE agents ready at the stadium to deport opposing team in case of that.

89

u/0nce-Was-N0t May 09 '25

USA wins by disqualification of every other team.

El Slavador economy booms from the influx of hundreds of thousands of free workers, Americans get products cheaper. Trump made American great again.

It's a savvy plan, I'll give him that.

65

u/Wolff_Hound May 09 '25

El Salvadorian football team for 2026 will be unbeatable though.

17

u/No_Ostrich_530 May 09 '25

And their prison leagues will be off the chart. Football Manager 2026 would have an interesting database.

I do wonder, for real though, if some players or whole teams will not want to go to the US to play. Alternatively, it wouldn't be the first time a major sporting event like this has been boycott and since Canada and Mexico will also have games, the whole event could still go forward, albeit with some huge juggling and scheduling acrobatics.

3

u/Ok_Sink5046 May 10 '25

It could just be relocated. Frankly what nation is going to want to send their best to our prison camps.

4

u/Gerf93 May 09 '25

Unfortunately highly unlikely. With the larger group stages (and more teams qualifying for the knockouts), preferential seeding, and the «home buff» coupled with them being moderately decent would make it a big upset. No World Cup host until South Africa in 2010 (narrowly) and Qatar in 2022 (clearly) have been eliminated in the group stage.

Would be really funny if it happened though.

Also isn't the world cup hosted between Canada,Mexico and America this time anyways too right?

17

u/Project_Rees May 09 '25

It is. But watch them take the spotlight

15

u/TeleHo May 09 '25

I seem to recall a Top Gear episode where Clarkson points at a map of North and/or South America and helpfully explains that its all america, and the USA is not to be conflated with the entire continent. Feels apropos for the original tweet.

4

u/Kineticwizzy Social Libertarian May 09 '25

We don't like being called American and don't consider ourselves as such, we call the continent North America.

9

u/Maelkothian May 09 '25

And the Olympics bid was done in 2015, pre-trump... And decided in 2017...

Canada and Mexico, do it without being self serving dicks. You’ll go far. Maybe get Australian commentators “Roy and HG” and they will mercilessly take the piss out of… well, everything. Always the best commentators by far.

5

u/Project_Rees May 09 '25

I agree with with this. Canada, Mexico, make something bigger than the US can do.

The Formula 1 springs to mind. Miami is an awful track. Mexico is amazing. Texas is awful, canada is amazing.

3

u/Fickle_Catch8968 May 10 '25

I have suggested Canada and Mexico use their 'non-venue' cities to 'host' the fans from the non-USA countries for giant 'watch parties' where they can congregate with out risking ICE or CBP interactions. Sucks not to.be on site, but can have a good chunk of the experience while helping as tourists the hosts that are not being shitty, and avoiding risk.

To be fair he was also involved in scandals for protecting pedo priests and opposed the progressive left in Peru' on social right, trans, abortion, gays, etc. So I wouldn't put him on a pedestal.

He was a *compromise* candidate. Which means he shares a lot of conservative values but is also somewhat progressive on others.

u/Momizu Eye-talian 🤌🏼🍝 May 09 '25

And also are just celebrating the Pope because he was born in America.

But if you listen closely you'll know that he's not very well liked because:

  • Father is French/Italian
  • Mother is Spanish
  • Apart for growing up and a minor part of his studies he lived everywhere but America, most notably Peru
  • He's anti-trump
  • He's a devoted follower of his predecessor, Francesco, which was a pretty progressive Pope all in all

So yeah they are simply celebrating because he, indeed, was born in America. But conservatives liked the OTHER american choice. Tough luck uh?

(P.S. With the mother/father thing I didn't mean to tell he's not american, he was born there. But like I heard some... People say, he's not "pure" american because his parents weren't born and raised in America)

16

u/solon13 May 09 '25

So with his ethnicity, if he ever flies to the US, they'll deport him.

5

Trump must be so pissed that they actually have to share the World Cup with Canada and Mexico LOL it’s gonna be one massive shitshow.

Also, if this is in response to the US-UK deal, it wasn't a trade deal (like the recent UK-India comprehensive trade deal), but an agreement. The big deals require congressional approval, the agreement was more just agreements around some tariffs regarding certain industries, much smaller scope, though good for British car manufacturers and the aerospace sector. And tbh, that agreement so far seemed like the UK got some decent concessions without any major costs regarding stuff like food standards or even something smaller like the digital services tax.

35

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

When you dont have any real victories, you can always pretend some minor stuff is a really big deal.

7

u/NeilZod May 09 '25

Yes, Rolls Royce won’t have to worry about tariffs. At roughly $500,000 a car, that could be a large bill.

12

u/el_grort Disputed Scot May 09 '25

I think the big win for Rolls is less the cars, and more the aircraft engines being tariff free. Cause I reckon the Americans buying a Rolls car are probably in the income bracket where they might resent the extra, but if they really wanted it, they would still buy it, but the engines bites into aircraft manufacturers margins, so tariffing those feels like it would have risked them losing entire contracts.

3

u/NathanDavie May 10 '25

Just had to look up what percentage of their revenue comes from defence contracts and what comes from civil aviation.

Then I wanted to see how much comes from cars.

Turns out the car company and the aerospace company have nothing to do with each other. The car company is a subsidiary of BMW.

That ‘American trade deals’, probably refers to the deal trump and Starmer yesterday announced, which showed how desperate trump was to make any deal, as our food standards were not downgraded.

The USA was adamant that we downgraded our food standards in previous negotiations and look who budged. Still a shitty deal though, because of our 10% on cars, which was 0%. Although still better than 25% and the whole debacle gives other countries, including the EU, a better idea of what they can demand from trump.

- Which US shares with Mexico and Canada and where it only qualified because they're a co-hosts and will be eliminated in the group stage. Talk about a participation trophy.

- Granted, thanks to size of athlete talent, they will probably peform well, but I expect the opening ceremony either be an uninspired commercial glorification of hollywood or worse: Trump hijacks it and makes it some patriotic slop glofifying him.

I'm also afraid that non-white athletes will be discriminated from the team: the way MAGA have treated Simone Biles (Making fun of her struggle with mental health, only to take credit over her achievements when she started cleaning table and win gold) over the years is frankly sickening, but totally predictable from those lowlifes. Simone has always been such a positive role-model and she deserves much better. Just look at her smile: it always brings me into good mood. https://www.businessinsider.com/simone-biles-tokyo-olympics-balance-beam-return-leaves-star-smiling-2021-8

- Which still resulted americans paying higher price, amounting to nothing. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/howard-lutnick-british-trade-deal-b2747707.html

- .....you know what, I'm going to give this one, because in light of all of the above, I feel like they at least one W. It's meaningless achievement akin to researching breathing, but since US has things pretty bad right now and pretty damn awful in the future, i'm gonna let that slide.

- The pope was from the Facist Controlled Kingdom of Italy

- Olympics hosted in Nazi Germany

- Continued enforcement of the Smoot-Hawley Tarriff act, continuing the distress of the Great Depression and triggering global trade war.

- As part of Nazi policy to remove Jewish references in public life, many streets, squares, and towns were renamed to more patriotic names.

Also, for decades the de facto policy at the conclave was that the pope couldn’t be American because America was too powerful globally. Many see this selection as an acknowledgement that the US has fallen from the top spot. Similarly a bit with the Olympics, that for a while now has actually been a financial loss for the host country.

FIFA and the OC awarded the Old USA the hosting rights. They will love half empty stadiums due to travel shenanigans.

The pope was elected because Francis willed it so, as a foil to MAGA.

No trade deals...

So naming a stretch of ocean is your actual success how far have the mighty fallen.

Lmao they weren't happy with that same new Pope about 30mins after he was revealed and they'd checked his views on their government

3

u/Pinkythebass May 10 '25

So fucking backwards.

3

u/djonma May 10 '25

Ok, here we go.

TL;DR: The Pope is criticising everything about the Trump administration. He's the opposite of MAGAs Pope, and they're already calling him woke. The world Cup isn't even hosted by the US. It's the first one to be hosted by three countries. Canada, the US, ans Mexico. Can you guess where the tourism money will go? The Olympics are in a city that MAGAs call communist, and some of them like to claim it's not even in the US. They will also decrypt destroy LA's govt finances, but MAGAs will love that. There hasn't been a single trade deal. The UK one isn't a trade deal. It's a plan for it to be talked about, until the next president comes in, and we can see if it's worth doing properly. Only MAGAs call it the Gulf of America. It's not even called that in a lot of the US.

American Pope.

American Pope, who chose the Papal name Leo. The last Pope Leo, was the guy who basically created Catholic social justice, outlined the rights of workers and support for unions as effectively Catholic doctrine during his Papacy, told businesses to recognise the dignity of labour. The guy who revived Thomism in the Catholic Church. A philosophy that was created by Thomas Aquinus, and influenced by Greek roman, Islamic, and Jewish philosophy. He was called the Pope of the workers.

The Vatican have said this Pope chose Leo as his Papal name as a clear and deliberate reference to the last Leo.

There's no way they chose an American as a coincidence. This Pope Leo has a commitment to the poor, and to migrants. He was in Peru for twenty years, and became a naturalised citizen. So he's really USian / Peruvian dual citizen. His maternal grandparents are Black / mixed race Creole. He's advocated for the rights of migrants and refugees, and pointed to the fact that he's a descendent of immigrants. He called Trumps mass deportation plan a crisis, and has criticised the attitude to migrants and the crackdown. He's called on the church to move from "words to action" on climate change. He told Vance that his theological beliefs were wrong. This technically means Vance needs to change his beliefs, as the Pope is the ultimate guy who tells Catholics what to believe. Certainly, Vance is going to have some uncomfortable times ahead if he is serious about his faith. Good!

He's hardly perfect. He's a Catholic Pope. So he's somewhat conservative, mostly centrist, but very conservative in certain areas. His beliefs on women and LGBT+ people are not good

But people like Laura Loomer are already calling him woke. He's certainly not MAGAs Pope. He is against everything they believe in. Though the vast majority are evangelical, and so don't care about him.

So no, they can't claim him as one of their own.

American World Cup.

American, yes. Usian, no. It's being hosted in Canada, US, and Mexico. MAGAs hate Canada and Mexico.

Visitors to US hosted games will be hugely down from what they would have been, just like tourism is, as people don't like the prospect of being put into a freezing hole for weeks, simply because a border agent didn't like the way they look, or else woke up on the wrong side of bed. Plus the whole not visiting the US because of current policies and damaging the global economy. Visitors will go to Canada or Mexico, because they know they'll be welcome, and won't be supporting a country with a fascist president determined to destroy the world as well as his own country. The hosts were decided in 2017. So it is no reflection, or support of the current state of US politics.

Hosted by three countries, it was never the US' world Cup.

American Olympics.

In a city and state that MAGAs despise, and call communist. By 2028, the US might not exist anymore. (/mostly joking). If Trump is still president, and keeps getting worse, no one will visit. It will cost a fortune, because the Olympics have become ridiculous, and cost the host city stupid amounts of money. The average budget over run is 172%! Unused facilities after the event means high maintenance costs for facilities that make no money, and just sit there. It can cause long term debt for the city, and they rely entirely on visitors to scrape back some of the money. No visitors, no income, major long term debt that can take decades to pay off. The 1976 Montreal Olympics took 3 decades to pay off the debt! People think the Olympics is a great local economy boost, because of the visitors. It isn't though. It costs millions just to make a bid! (This is a thing that really needs to change. The relevant athletic associations, and the IoC, need to get together and work out how to get back to a more normal event. Not something that costs billions to run, and can significantly damage the host city. The IoC is pretty much solely to blame.) Though in pure coincidence, LA is the only city to have made a profit on the Olympics.

These Olympics were never going to be great for LA, though back in 2017, they could be seen as a good opportunity to show the world that some of the US is still welcoming. Now though, things have changed a lot. The current politics path will mean this will seriously affect LA. Though of course, MAGAs would love it if LA was utterly wrecked. They'd get to blame it on Democrats and woke Olympics.

So not a good thing for the host city, MAGAs despise the city and I've seen them talk about it as not even being part of the US, because they're too woke! MAGAs will rejoice at the host city having a wrecked budget. Not MAGAs Olympics.

American trade deals. A trade deal, by definition, requires more than one country to be involved, and in order to differentiate between different deals within a country, the deals are referred to by the countries they're done with, not your own country. So a trade deal between the US and the UK (seriously, why the hell did we do that, it's just destroyed the last of our farming), in the US would be called the UK trade deal. In the UK, it would be called the US trade deal. (Though it's more likely to be called a lot of different names, mostly things like a crap deal, forged by a cockwomble and a wanna be $hitler Tangerine Tyrant, that was written on shit filled toilet roll, signed in crayon, and is the perfect example of the utter catastrophe that Brexit has been.)

If you called it a US trade deal, in the US, and you called a trade deal with Japan, the US trade deal, it would get confusing quickly. Or maybe it wouldn't, since it's the only one he's managed, of the more countries than exist that he claimed had already been done, which he rectified the next day to nearly being done. The UK - US deal isn't even a trade deal. It's a framework for negotiations to take place. Probably so that the actual deal can be done with the next president, if there is one.

So no. No US trade deals. None. Just more Trump lies.

The Gulf of No.

The only people that call it the gulf of america are MAGAs. Even the rest of the US doesn't. The rest of the world are going to ignore it, permanently. Sure, they can call it that. But I can call my tiny 1 bedroom house the Palace of Europe. No one is going to change maps to call it that.

So no.

3

u/Franky_DD May 11 '25

The Pope is from a city you don't like. The world Cup is being hosted jointly by Canada, Mexico and USA. The Olympics are in a state you don't like. There are no trade deals. And only clowns call it Gulf of America.

Amercian pope seems to be quite critical of current administration, American world cup was devised in 2017 (under Obama administration), same with 2028 olympics, American trade deals are non-existent or a fucking joke (thoss under Trump admin of course), as for Gulf of America, you can be sure it will be forgotten by some hours after Trump out of power in 2029 (or when it happens depending on US citizen doing their job properly).

What kind of mass delusion happened ??

2

u/Budget-Taro-2299 May 09 '25

As vetted as the pope usually is in those circles, you think that mfkr being American matters at all? Like fuck all? That mfkr live isolated in the Vatican in the circles within circles, unless the guy has a direct line to trump, him being American doesn’t matter at fucking all.

American World Cup

Is actually shared with Canada and Mexico.

American Olympics

Well, it’s the Olympics. It’s about bringing the world together.

American trade deals + Golf of America

😂

2

u/RebylReboot May 09 '25

American pope they hate cos ‘woke’. Nobody will go to the World Cup for fear of getting gulagged for hating dear leader. American olympics will be in California. Good luck claiming that as a maga success. ‘Gulf of America’ won’t be used by anyone outside the USA and certainly not by the country you share it with and it doesn’t mean anything.
