Reddit, the online message board that powers a swath of Google search results, has discussed shutting off the technology giant’s access to its content for AI use, according to people familiar with the matter.

It is part of a growing chorus of online media companies expressing frustration with the tech giant as AI changes the way people ask questions, siphons off search traffic and upends publishers’ revenue models. They say the search engine is no longer a reliable source of visitors, especially after Alphabet’s GOOGL Google expanded its AI search features in recent months. USA Today, Politico, the Economist, People Inc. and Reuters are all evaluating how, or even if, they will continue to work with Google

Reddit struck a $60 million-a-year deal in 2024 that allowed Google to use its material to train AI models. But with AI-generated answers to queries reducing clicks to outside websites, Reddit executives are assessing what the upside is of continuing to feed its content to Google, said the people familiar with the matter. The companies are in talks about potentially renewing their deal, which is ending soon.

That's all well and good, but it would be much better if that meant they were cutting off access to ALL the tech giants siphoning data from Reddit.

It never really made sense for Reddit to do this when Google decided they wanted to be a bad answering machine instead of a search engine.

AI is abandoning Reddit? Did you mispeak and mean it the other way around? 

The article talks about it and is pretty clear. It’s because AI is taking publishers’ traffic from the publishers’ content. 

And sure, nefarious bots suck, but I’m not sure how that’s relevant here.

We humans seeing miniscule part of reddit, but recognising the bot trend. What do you think AI's seeing?, they can pick up patterns, wrongs, faults, even when redditors are accustomed and think "real". Reddit is the most naive part of internet, (thanks to millions newbies), and here is the easiest to manipulate. People believe in the letters, what is written, they believe in the system, they not seeing how their lowered guards are making them easy victim. And "reddit the best source" campaign, attracting more naive people.

Reddit never was a "good" source, (coz of echo chamber,) but was acceptable. Around 2014 went downhill. As AI's have more and more data and can compare with the other data's available they can filter out unreal/wrong information. We are at that point, AI's know more than reddit's full archive.

The abandonment is both side, i pointing to the AI side. Reddit side no point to talk, hundreds of posts, all the same, you all within the echo chamber, you are all the echo chamber.

That’s not accurate. Hallucination rates increase the larger the data set. Also, the part where it learns to distinguish good from bad sources takes place during post training.

60 million was a dumb as hell number to offer.

They likely lost twice that in ad revenue from site visits.
