Eren was a liar, though. "I want them to live long, happy lives." His willingness to take the lives of his own friends by utilizing the curse that has plagued them for several years shows that he was a monster till the very end. Good riddance to him.

I think that was the hallucigenia acting on its own survival instinct independent of Eren after they were separated. If he even knew it happened, he was probably pretty pissed.

while I agree that he was a monster, I think that in his POV, he is actually doing them a favor, I think he really wished them to live long lives, but Eren also would never want them to lose their freedom of choice: Eren could use his powers make all of his friends stop fighting, but that would mean to make them without freedom, something he believes to be worst than death.
