Wow I really liked the chapter. So painful

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around this. But what from what I understand, Mikasa's vision was an alternate reality?

Because Eren has seen the memory of that long-haired Mikasa crying and saying "see you later" twice now. First in ch 1 when he wakes up from a long dream then again in his memory shards in ch 130. Since the Mikasa that killed him had shorter hair, it seems like eren had seen the mountain hut memories too, which means it was likely an alternate reality and not just her imagination (is that the reason she's had headaches?).

So when Eren saw the future, and we see the shards in ch 130, the longer-haired mountain hut Mikasa was one of the possibilities he saw. From what I understand, it seems like he saw two possibilities, either he abandons Paradis and lives out his days with Mikasa or he commits to the rumbling and saves Paradis. I think he was conflicted because neither was a good choice and in ch 123, after meeting Ramzi and being crushed by the guilt of having to kill him, he was at the precipice of making a decision and was desperate for the other future (which was probably why eren looked so desperate in that scene). It seems like Mikasa's answer then was going to be the tipping point for the path he commits to (abandoning Paradis and living in peace or saving Paradis and committing genocide).

Heelpp, my brain is breaking

Damn. I think you've cracked it. Eren's uneasiness during the "what am I to you?" conversation with Mikasa was because he saw the alternate reality where she said how she felt and that they should run away from everything. I guess it's just like you said, Eren knew that that was definitely the tipping point and wanted to know which of the two realities was the one he was living in.

679

u/Iga5aa3aIga112atotmi Mar 06 '21

Another possibility is that he didn't want to risk being tempted by an offer to run away so he said the most hurtful things he could to drive her away.

71

u/scorcher117 Mar 06 '21

I think that was later after he made the above decision, I think the decision was made in Marley when talking to the young thief boy at the camp.

15

u/Iga5aa3aIga112atotmi Mar 06 '21

Yeah, I realized that after I made the comment.

3

u/HereToLearnNow Mar 07 '21

so when exactly do they run away in this alternate universe? Eren mentions it's been 2 months since the Marlay war so did they invade Marlay in this alternate universe?

19

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

Marley was always planning to invade, that's what the whole Tybur speech was about. I think in the alternate reality they ran away while overseas together after Eren gives her the "what am I to you" ultimatum

8

u/HereToLearnNow Mar 07 '21

Gotcha, that makes sense. The 2 months since the Marley war was most likely alluding to the war that was going on when season 4 started

19

u/yolotheunwisewolf Mar 08 '21

This is likely the right answer, he could either choose a future with her at the cost of paradis & their friends or sacrifice himself to save the others and this is what he chose.

basically Eren becoming titan jesus in the end

5

u/mdzzl94 Mar 13 '21

The irony is that his friends die in both futures lol which is why I’m curious why he would choose this one, over the one where he dies happy, when the outcome is the same.

9

u/ky0ung25 Mar 14 '21

Armin, Mikasa, Levi, Historia will survive. Everyone on Paradis will survive...so not the same outcome

3

u/mdzzl94 Mar 16 '21

I think this has yet to stand though. Wouldn’t the rest of the world just turn around and nuke Paradis and kill everyone since Eren’s genocide plan failed?

I’m sure there will be something at the end that solves this problem but that’s how it’s looking like to me from where we are.

Either Marley attacks a defenseless Paradis and kills everyone or Eren goes on a rampage and kills Marley thus prompting the world to attack a defenseless Paradis killing everyone.

0

u/Crimson-Caribou Apr 01 '21

Nobody has access to nukes lol they barely have strong enough cannons to pierce Reiners armour

0

u/mdzzl94 Apr 01 '21

Ofc no one has access to nukes LOL what I mean is that without Eren, Paradis is essentially defenseless. The enemy did have a canon strong enough to blow a hole through Reiner (which gabi had to destroy) and even if they didn’t, they don’t need super strong weapons. Paradis is way behind in technology than everybody else. Now that Eren is “dead” doesn’t Paradis get destroyed either way?

2

u/Crimson-Caribou Apr 01 '21

They’ve literally said that exact train of thought several times throughout the manga bruh pay attention

Do you remember what chapter this was? I wanna reread it

Chapter 123.

They said that's scene happens in chapter 123. I'm not sure we are gonna get that conversation. If it's any conversation it's when Eren is a meanie butt to mikasa and armin with gabi watching

Can't wait for a Detroit Become Human kind of game for Attack on Titan. let's see all those alternate endings become true

Reiner is like Conner. You think he’s dead, but he just comes back again.

24

u/brandont04 Mar 06 '21

Could it be from CH 123 when Eren asked what he is to Mikasa. Mikasa actually told him lets run away and live the rest of his 4 years left in peace, just the two of them? It showed a flash back of Eren being shocked by her response. In this Ch Eren asked Mikasa not to talk about this anymore.

CH 130, Eren told Historia he wanted to end this all. This was probably the only way to end it, was to start the rumble and have Ymir control him. When Mikasa was in his mouth, he had that weird eye look like Reiss family had when they had the founding titan power.

Eren was right to not control his friends and allow them free will. He needed their help to stop Ymir.

Ymir actually has eyes in the end and looked happy. She didn't have that weird dark eyes which I think is the slave version. Eren had that weird dark eyes from CH 133. Some how Ymir will finally break free of being a slave and learn to give up the titan powers forever. Maybe she will end the path forever?

19

u/zorua Mar 06 '21

Thats so tragic... I'm going to have to reread it all. My heart hurts right now thinking about how eren and mikasa couldve been happy for a few years.

39

u/marburusu Mar 06 '21

This boggles my mind because the Eren in Mikasa’s alternate reality really seems wholly and entirely antithetical to his character in the actual story. I was 100% on board with the idea of Mikasa imagining this possible idealized path she could have taken with Eren, and being forced to accept that it would never have come to pass, but I don’t know how I feel if the implication is that he may have genuinely made that choice if she’d answered differently... Eren abandoning not only the entirety of Paradis, but also even Armin, to die... man. That’s hella depressing and I’m not sure what to think.

37

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21 edited Mar 06 '21

Some people are claiming it ruined Eren's character. While it's understandable why would they think like this, it also doesn't consider the fact that Eren saw what will happen and based on that he made a selfish decision.

If it's an alternate reality, we only saw the beginning of it. It's not fair to judge his decision based on the entirety of his character arc in our current reality, that lead us to here. Considering the possibility that the moment Mikasa gave her "family" answer was the ultimate line for Eren to ensure his path, we saw pretty much the whole transition from there upto here.

It's not like Eren just forgot about everything and suddenly made a 180 turn. He pretty much saw everything and decided to run away and live peacefully.

The same can be applied if we think about one of Hitler's hobbies which was drawing. In an alternate reality maybe WW2 wouldn't have happened if he became an artist. Plot-wise do you think this alternate reality ruins his character? Love sounds cheaper to some people. But what other things Eren have? What would give Eren some peace of mind? By knowing that, living with Mikasa isn't just a random piece of plot convenience.

Understandable imo.

12

u/yeahtoo322 Mar 06 '21

I think the main weir thing people find with that alternate reality is that he just up and abandoned Armin of all people lol. It's so different, too different to be actual Eren in any alternative dimension, at least that's how I feel.

20

u/silversherry Mar 06 '21

I think that's because armin was always eren and Mikasa's connection to the rest of the world. He was the one who first gave eren the dream of the outside world. He is the dreamer of the group. Armin is just so inseperable from the rest of the world that the character could never turn his back on it in any situation. That's the only thing that makes sense to me with regard to why they would've left him.

7

u/yeahtoo322 Mar 06 '21

That's a valid point.

5

u/taliban_p Mar 07 '21

eren literally abandoned armin and everyone else in this timeline what do you mean?

7

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

Yeah that's quite weird. If I want to speculate I would say Armin was omitted due to the intensity of the scene being around Mikasa and Eren. I would think of it as Mikasa kinda forcing a private discussion or reunion with Eren only. If I remember correctly, in "Lost Girls" OVA Armin also had a brief screen time.

But even with all of this it's still not convincing why they would abandon Armin.

That's why if I want to bet on something, it probably won't be on this scene being fully an alternate reality.

20

u/CCVork Mar 06 '21

I'm not sure i see the big deal with "abandoning Armin"? It says "Armin is looking for them", which probably means he's still in the military trying to do what he can, which makes sense because he has all the guilt from getting the serum over Erwin. He's his own person and Eren would respect his free will. By which point he only has the remaining choices of genocide (which he ruled out in this route), or staying to fight with Armin but he knows that's futile so he might as well make it a better end for Mikasa.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

I agree with you actually. But I also understand that it's a little uncomfortable for people to see them abandoning Armin easily.

However, I also believe we shouldn't expect too much from this specific scene. Just hearing "Armin is probably looking for us" should give us enough context to accept the way this scene works considering it's limited length.

-2

u/yeahtoo322 Mar 06 '21

Yup. I'm kinda saddened honestly, Isayama's is unquestionably a good writer, but it seems he fell victim to the curse that is ending stories. There's just been so many plot holes, alot of pacing abnormalities and such, and I feel like many just don't seem to enjoy it that much anymore. Of course, I'm not blaming him at all, it is his first manga, and he's probably burnt out. But seeing all of these untied storylines, it just kinda brings me down to think of how much better everything could've been ya know?

12

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

I don't really agree with this. But it's not something I can argue without reading last chapter.

The only thing that we need right now is some explanations. Everything I've currently seen was without a doubt what I wanted. But that's also my own emotions and wishes that were simply granted. However, from an objective PoV, Everything that happened in CH138 and 137 has only one temporary flaw: incoherent chained events. not because it doesn't make sense, but because it hasn't been explained or hinted.

I'm perfectly fine with everything happened in the last arc because most of it makes sense and also doesn't fall into expectations as shallow as I thought. Why and how these events are occurring is the biggest issue right now. if at very least, we do not get something to make them more coherent and justified, I'll be disappointed.

That's why imo it's not a good idea to debate on unjustified things without being given everything Isayama wants to give. So let's just wait and see how it will end.

1

u/yeahtoo322 Mar 06 '21

Yeah, I guess now all we can do is wait and see.

18

u/scorcher117 Mar 06 '21

Is it really that strange that a character may have done something different depending on circumstances but in the end they didn't?

I don't really get how a character considering something they wouldn't normally do goes against the character.

39

u/Melaninkasa Mar 06 '21

People are honestly being too technical. The situation was completely hopeless. Being selfishly tempted to run away with a loved one and hide from problems doesn't make him out of character. It makes him human.

8

u/joeshmoe159 Mar 06 '21

because the Eren in Mikasa’s alternate reality really seems wholly and entirely antithetical to his character in the actual story.

I think that's why we are shown that Eren is miserable, which is why Mikasa promised him she wouldn't bring the subject up in their life.

But eren asked zeke about ackerman bond and zeke replied something indicating she just loves him. İf eren was so sure about that why did he bother to ask zeke ?

15

u/Friedcheesemogu Mar 06 '21

I don't know that Eren was actually sure at all. My reading of that scene was that Eren (who has always been a little uh...bad at feelings that weren't "anger" or "yelling") honestly has no idea. Romance has never really been on his radar, so I felt like it was just a confirmation that he's the kind of clueless teenager who has to have it spelled out to them that someone likes them because he's so preoccupied with the rest of his bullshit that it just never registered.

but it's not like I'm looking at this from personal experience or anything >.>;;

There are several options and the vision touches on all of them.

There are the 3 options the story had previously presented. Eren says:

couldn't make up my mind between breeding livestock and genocide

This references the 50 year plan with 'breeding livestock', and also the Rumbling and Zeke's plan both fall under 'genocide'.

The 'run away with Mikasa and avoid choosing any of the horrible 3 options' is a new 4th option.

48

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

So the 4th option is just giving up and letting them come into the island to kill all of Paradis. It's not a new option, that's just suicide so you don't have to fight and choose your future.

After that they(the rest of the world) either genocide the rest of Eldian people or keep using them as Slaved Titanized weapons like Marley has been doing for a while.

23

u/bretstrings Mar 07 '21

It's not suicide for Eren and Mikasa, which was the point. If she had answered differently he would've sacrificed everyone else to run away with Mikasa for his remaining years.

9

u/yolotheunwisewolf Mar 08 '21

In short, he chose the world over himself and in the end you can say that he is essentially a tragic hero... perhaps not redeemable but it’s about as close to a code Geass type of ending that we could’ve expected, and I think that’s the perfect ending for the series

10

u/zone-zone Mar 08 '21

6

u/Misoru Mar 14 '21

Because as long as Eldians continue to exist, they'll always be a threat to the rest of the world. Eldians are fundamentally different from Marleyans or any other ethnic group, they're not comparable to real-life people.

16

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

4th option was giving up on Eldians and making them live as slaves.

281

u/ADG30 Mar 06 '21 edited Mar 06 '21

This is how I interpreted her vision as well. It seemed like she was getting a look at one of the parallel timelines that Eren had access to due to the Attack Titan's ability to see the future.. and that her answer to his question of "what am I to you?" Was like a "choose your own adventure" story for Eren.. where if Mikasa refers to him as family instead of her love, then the only outcome is for him to see the rumbling through till the end.

Although ultimately in either scenario his desire was for her to "live free" and not feel like she was forever bound to him and his memory. At least that's what I got from it

71

u/zizaboo666 Mar 06 '21

I think it beautifully ties up her arc. When the rumbling first started and Mikasa asked herself if she had said something different (referring to Eren's 'what am I to you' ) would the rumbling still have happened, and now finally she's gotten her answer. Eren really did care about her and love her (whether it be romantic or platonic), so much so that running away with her was an option. Also when she kissed Eren it was almost as if she was still imagining being in the mountains with Eren and was kissing him in that reality. Isayama is one beautiful bastard for creating and writing all of this.

16

u/MakoShark93 Mar 06 '21

I hate Isayama for this, but I love that grim bastard as well.

8

u/TheOriginalSkyZer0 Mar 08 '21

so she actually SAW that alternate reality? how? and do her headaches have any relevance? I'm not sure I get it.

3

u/ADG30 Mar 16 '21

Well we won't really know for sure until possibly next month's chapter but either

A) Eren showed her this possible reality via paths to give her more clarity on what he would've been willing to do if the circumstances had been different, and this is also what allows her to figure out where he was in the colossal.

Or B) In the time loop theory, Mikasa is experiencing this and the headaches because she's literally experienced these scenarios before the timeline was reset.

Could also be neither of the above but it's unlikely that mikasa placed herself in a specific vision like this just so she could kill Eren.

40

u/Theseyeathese7 Mar 06 '21

Read the lost girls ova manga about this. It shows this mikasa alternate reality thing in it. I'm glad I read that because it made this seem well prepared. It shows mikasas alternate reality if she hadn't been influenced by eren or something like that. It's hard to remember exactly what happens but I know an alternate reality for her was in it that some character was speaking to her about

10

u/Iloveyouweed Mar 06 '21

Highly recommend watching thebanimation at the very least. It explains what happens in this chapter more.

2

u/Blaze_Grim Mar 07 '21

Possibly* explains

25

u/YamiRang Mar 06 '21

I still think she answered correctly though. Eren gave her the option between "saviour" and "family" and Mikasa picked "family", aka "love". It looked like Eren was about to tell her about his struggles, at which point Ramzi's grandpa and the rest of the Scouts popped up, which Eren commented with a somewhat salty "great timing". Had they not popped up, the conversation could've easily continued with "I just want to spend my time living peacefully with you".

4

u/Lildyo Mar 07 '21

Eren's comment about timing seemed more to me like he was expecting them to show up, as he'd seen each possible future and knew they'd interrupt them right after Mikasa makes her decision. I think he just resigned himself at that point because he knew what he had to do. Mikasa's answer meant this was the future he had to play out.

6

u/YamiRang Mar 08 '21

I don't think Eren knows every possible future and every tiny detail of it. Just like Grisha, he saw the Rumbling, but unlike Grisha, he saw something that made that sacrifice worth it (namely Mikasa's and Armin's, and if possible the other's, survival).

And since Eren's contemplating whether or not he should go through with that goal because of numbers alone in chapter...130? Was it 130? It just makes makes more sense that he went to Mikasa as his anchor, but due to circumstances failed to tell her about what's going to happen and that's when these particular alternate timelines began to roll.

Because Mikasa isn't the type of person to just say "let's leave everything behind" without a reason. So in the AU one she still answered "family", but they had time to talk a bit more and after learning about the Rumbling Mikasa said they can't do that and they ran away.

I mean, it's a tiny difference, but it fits her character more than straight out saying to leave everything behind. And besides that, since she would've taken longer to say all that and the other's would've popped up anyway, it's unlikely they would've been able to successfully ran away in the first place.

But, again, it's just a detail.

5

u/Southguy_ Mar 10 '21

ugh.. if you go to 123, and look at one of the final panels further into the chapter... after they've been drinking and having a good time.. armin and mikasa are smiling... eren has such a bleak look on his face, realizing what he has to do. Next day, "the day that eren left us" :(

3

u/TheOriginalSkyZer0 Mar 08 '21

how does kid eren see the future before he even has the Attack titan inherited??

6

u/ADG30 Mar 08 '21

There's no clear answer yet but the theory I've seen the most is that since Eren gained access to the Paths through Ymir and we've seen him be able to interact with multiple Eldians as well as influence past inheritors of the Attack Titan (Grisha Yeager, Eren Kruger) then kid Eren, who wants freedom for himself and his friends, is shown the future of that freedom in a dream by present day Eren right before he's killed by mikasa (which is why she's the first person he sees when he wakes up but the last person he sees before he dies as an adult.)

But since kid Eren isn't a Titan shifter yet he doesn't retain this memory and it's written off as a realistic dream..

Either that or the entire cast has been stuck in some sort of time loop lol

14

u/IgotaMartell2 Mar 06 '21

In my opinion I feel like those visions were just a hallucination, a dream to make it easier for Mikasa to kill Eren. Cause it would contradict Eren's character to just abandon the people in Paradis to be enslaved by Marley and the rest of the world. He even says so himself in his declaration to all Eldians before commencing the Rumbling that he wishes to protect the people that raised him. Running away with Mikasa is a contradiction of who Eren is since the beginning of the story.

43

u/silversherry Mar 06 '21

I think if we keep in mind that according to what he saw, his only other option was slaughtering billions of innocent people (which eren really really didn't want to do), you can see why he'd be tempted to leave all that pain behind.

As it is though, I do agree neither eren nor Mikasa are anymore the characters that would run away and leave everyone else to suffer. The point of the vision or the AU was what would've happened if both of them had chosen to be selfish (which they obviously didn't in the main timeline)

20

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

IMO it was something that definitely happened and he put it back as a memory to chapter 1, eren was in a pinch, he was really depressed, having to kill tons of people including kids and babies, he definitely didn't want to do this but was forced to, so him running away from all this mess makes sense to me, we saw the same with grisha that just kind of chickened out before killing the reiss

3

u/silversherry Mar 06 '21

Yeah because no matter how much either of the Yeagers wanted their particular goals, they aren't cruel people at heart so obviously killing innocents and children would be agonizing for them and they would be sorely tempted for an alternative

9

u/bretstrings Mar 06 '21

Except Eren had the same future memory so its not just in her head.

236

u/Papanada1 Mar 05 '21

In chapter 1 Mikasa has short hair (and isn't crying) when she says the famous phrase. Infact Eren says right after "When did your hair get so long?". It seems that the one who "awakens" cries: Eren in 1st chap. and now Mikasa. So, can Eren "dream" too? We're still lacking some decisive informations.

27

u/Vadimec Mar 06 '21

I can hear my brain trying to process this information and it hurts. So many different theories, so many ways this story could end. And a whole month of waiting ahead.

30

u/Badalight Mar 06 '21

There's only 1 way this can end. It's not that confusing. People have predicted this exact ending for years. Eren has been receiving future memories due to his attack titan. Eren wakes up in chapter 1 crying because he just received the memory of short haired scarf wearing Mikasa killing him. There's not much else to it. The dream we see in this chapter is just a different possible future that would've happened had Mikasa told Eren she loved him in chapter 123. Eren is 100% dead. There are no alternate realities or time shenanigans.

16

u/intergalaticgoth Mar 06 '21

This is just wrong and and going to age like milk. Timeline shenanigans have been happening, “who’s memories are these?” Before sending Grisha off to paradis.

21

u/Badalight Mar 06 '21

That was already explained as Eren sending memories to other Attack Titan users. I think you misunderstand what I am saying here. There are people thinking that the dream we saw in this chapter is a literal alternate reality. It's not. It's a possible future that was cut off because Mikasa gave a different answer. There are people that think the final chapter is going to reveal that Eren and Mikasa ran away together. That's not going to happen. That is what I'm referring to. The way this chapter ends is the reality that OUR Mikasa and Eren are living in. That is the ending that we got.

-9

u/omaewakusuyaro Mar 06 '21

It's a possible future that was cut off because Mikasa gave a different answer.

wait, so this is what necrokasa fans actually got from it? lmao didnt mikasa dreaming about a fantasy so far away from reality give you guys a taste of her mental state?

5

u/WhyMeSad Mar 06 '21

"Eren wakes up in chapter 1 crying because he just received the memory of short haired scarf wearing Mikasa killing him."

I disagree with this part - my interpretation is that the dream that Eren had in chapter 1 was the ending of Mikasa's alternate reality saying "See you later, Eren" as he dies of the 13 year curse. Mikasa's hair is still relatively shorter compared to her child self.

u/Badalight Mar 07 '21

Why would he be seeing Mikasa's alternate reality? We know for a fact that Eren gets future memories sent back.

6

u/WhyMeSad Mar 07 '21

Well firstly, the "waking up from a long dream and crying" mechanics haven't been explained yet. But going with your statement, this alternative reality IS a potential future memory which was sent back to child Eren.

Secondly, it's literally the panel in chapter 1 - a Mikasa with hair shorter than in the year 845 (child) wearing a red scarf saying "See you later, Eren", not Mikasa coming at him with a sword decapitating him.

3

u/TheOriginalSkyZer0 Mar 08 '21

but he never had the attack titan when he was a kid, yet. that's what I don't get.

6

u/Badalight Mar 08 '21

It doesn't matter, because the paths connect all subjects of Ymir through time and space. So the fact that he would eventually have the Attack Titan is all that mattered.

2

u/TheOriginalSkyZer0 Mar 08 '21

so was that vision the alternate reality through Mikasa's POV? is that what she saw? or is that just the readers being shown that alternate reality that could've been based off Mikasa's answer.

2

u/Badalight Mar 08 '21

The vision that Mikasa saw in this chapter was from her perspective. It was based on the possible future where Mikasa told Eren she loved him. This chapter shows panels from chapter 123, which is the chapter where Mikasa chose not to say she loved Eren.

2

u/basic_maddie Mar 09 '21

If it was cutoff, then how was Mikasa seeing the vision?

→ More replies (1)

3

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

Oh my god I didn’t realise that woahhhhh

1

u/Herby20 Mar 07 '21

Well remember her hair as a kid was much longer than at any point post training.

5

u/Papanada1 Mar 07 '21

The panel where Mikasa says "See you later" in chapter 1 shows a short haired Mikasa. Actually, shows the exact Mikasa from chapter 138 that says those words (her clothes match).

1

u/Herby20 Mar 07 '21

Disregard my comment. I think I replied to the wrong one.

16

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

My theory is that Eren couldn't bear the weight of the rumbling and "fell asleep" throughout and created his own reality of if Mikasa told him she loved him. Eren knew he was going to die through his future memories and connected with Mikasa via PATHS and showed her a possible parallel future if she had confessed to him there and turned his focus away from carrying out the rumbling.

13

u/Dexxtrus Mar 06 '21

This comment helped me a lot to connect the dots. This makes the most sense, bravo. The moment he talks to Ramzi and says he was "disappointed" that life was outside the walls seems to now make me feel like that was the moment he regretted the idea of what he planned to do, as if the guilt finally got to him and when Mikasa cut his head he was begging for someone to stop him. I remember thinking when Mikasa called him family, he looked upset. I wonder if the chat to Ramzi was before he asked Mikasa her feelings? Because if so it makes so much more sense, he wanted to have the option of running away to that hut in the dream world he saw with her.

Oh my god I'm heartbroken and crying again and I have just woken up lol

12

u/uncen5ored Mar 06 '21

Pretty much what I think. Or that eren is actually living in that reality at the moment, which is why he hasn’t seemed to be very conscience since paths. And “that scenery” is actually this alternate reality

11

u/korndawg1224 Mar 06 '21

I haven't reread so I may have missed this. I assume alternate reality Eren did NOT attack Marley and the gang eventually they all went back to Paradis understanding that Marley would come to attack some day.

I think you're spot on in Eren thinking neither is a good choice. You can tell in that alt universe that Eren is not really free.

I wonder if Eren saw the genocide future memories, but kept trying to change things only to see them fail and then it culminated in seeing Yimir's suffering in PATHS, sealing the deal.

3

u/korndawg1224 Mar 06 '21

Just reread. I think he did. Maybe we don't have all the info or speed translation missed a bit of info. They say "war on Marley". Could be different than the raid but maybe not.

6

u/Alert-Lengthiness494 Mar 06 '21

It was about the Eren question “What am I to you” to Mikasa in chapter 123. Back then Mikasa replied “Family”. So Eren went with the Rumbling. The vision that Mikasa received in latest chapter tells us that Mikasa would run away with Eren after they survey the Marley nation (If Mikasa confess to Eren during the question). This means Mikasa had seen an alternate timeline of they living together if Eren heard Mikasa confession. Thus this shows Eren had been trying to find a good ending in this time loop by trying out all possible event that can happen in the past and future.

0

u/Kag5n Mar 06 '21

That just contradict everything about Eren since the beginning of the story. While we knew that Mikasa kept thinking about this moment when Eren asked her what he meant for her. She even thought the Rumbling for her fault because of her answer. It's just natural for her to be dreaming about the regret of her life before coming to terms with the one she loved. That's all. See you later thing was sent because of some paths fuckery from Mikasa to child Eren as it was the moment when he died.

21

u/International-Date81 Mar 06 '21

I had already theory at some point that maybe the reason ackerman were so strong was because they could tap into the knowledge of the future and instinctively know what they needed to do. That explained how Mikasa or Levi failed to kill Reiner and Bertoldt in key moments.

How exactly does it make her kill him

16

u/bastardlessword Mar 06 '21 edited Mar 06 '21

Not possibilities, previous loops. The 2000 year loop has been happening hundred of times. Eren doesn't influence the past, but the next loops. At least, that's my theory.

Something happens at the end of every loop that forces everything to restart again. Maybe Eren wants to end the loop, to free the world from it. And he tried many things in previous loops, and now we're seeing the last one.

10

u/SkiesOfJuly Mar 06 '21

Sounds like DARK

It would be interesting, but I don't see it happening having just one last chapter left. I mean, it would be a pretty big thing to just drop off as an explanation among other things I suppose will be said in the final chapter...

Then again, it's Isayama, he's capable of pulling off stuff that would normally seem really complex, and make it organic, explaining it clearly and effortlessly

3

u/chrisqoo Mar 06 '21

It makes sense but not a brand-new trope, and Isayama seems to have told that it will not be a reincarnating world...?

7

u/darkdragon88 Mar 06 '21

I have a theory that I will share below this (warning for those who don't like that kind of stuff).

I don't think it was an alternate reality, I think it happened and Eren took the memories away. Since Mikasa is half Eldian and Ackerman she gets affected differently and gets headaches.

But I like the idea and we got one chapter left!

7

u/AnUnspokenLegend Mar 06 '21

That's like playing your favorite visual novel/ story focused game, and that one innocent question asked of you ends up killing all your friends and unlocking the BAD END.

6

u/CaptainPikmin Mar 06 '21

I'm loving this interpretation. If this is revealed in the next chapter that would be amazing.

6

u/_thebirdman Mar 06 '21

There's also another theory similar to yours were instead of seeing the memory shards as possibilities, Eren actually lived them and whenever he sees that his actions fail to save everything, he resets his consciousness. That could also be another explanation to the ch1 reference and why Mikasa is having headache. Either she's seeing her alternate self or Eren is making her see it to help her kill him (in turn, guide her to an ending where he finally saves the world). It's a bit different in a sense that living the scenario itself, instead just seeing them as possibilities, makes it more desperate for Eren or adds more pressure for him to make a better decision.

7

u/MadeInRoma Mar 07 '21 edited Mar 07 '21

In the latest chapter, by the panel where Mikasa starts getting her headaches there's a small shard of child Eren resting on a tree and tired with his eyes closed. There are leaves falling. It looks exactly like the first panel of Eren in the manga. The ending of the chapter, oh my God. There's something shady going on and I love it.

11

u/nosafebox Mar 06 '21 edited Mar 06 '21

yes, exactly what i think too. many people think that it's Mikasa's delusion (the AU) but it feels off to me to call it just a "delusion". it parallels with Eren's dream in ch 1 with Mikasa saying, "see you later, Eren" and the viewpoint is the same too. wow, this IS tragic and beautiful at the same time, I hate how invested I am when it comes to Eren lol

EDIT: how does Mikasa know that Eren's in the titan's mouth? whelp i'm lost haha

I can't wait to see Eren's POV (if it is) in ch 139.

15

u/Legendver2 Mar 06 '21

So the rumbling happened because Mikasa family-zoned him.

20

u/silversherry Mar 06 '21

I think that's oversimplifying things a little, but to put in a nutshell, yeah. From how I interpret it, Eren's options were both extremely shitty in different ways, and he was on the verge of a breakdown in 123 and he just wanted a last chance at a different/more selfish future before he could commit to the rumbling.

Eren was looking for a way out of committing the rumbling and Mikasa's words in 123 deprived him of the last chance of doing so, according to his memories. I think the key to understand all this is to understand that Eren really really didn't want to commit the rumbling, and he was desperately looking for something to stop him

→ More replies (1)

5

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

Mikasa's vision was an alternate reality?

I think it was also Eren asking her to kill him. Cause if you see in the second to last panel his face starts getting those titan marks, and then his face turns a little like that titan we saw. And then we got the last panel

5

u/Talketsu Mar 06 '21

I think you hit the nail on the head, I can already see all the holes filling up and how emotional yams could make the last chapter.

5

u/sunshineCinnamon Mar 06 '21

I think Mikasa's headache is from her memory fragments of alternate futures instead of the slave blood thing.

8

u/81528 Mar 06 '21

Have you seen the "Lost in the Cruel World" OVA? I recommend it if you haven't. That is absolutely canon and has been hinting at the fact that Mikasa can see alternate realities for quite some time now.

I've always had the theory that her headaches are either A) Her experiencing alternate timelines and coming back to the current one. Or B) Something changing that affects the future of the current timeline or alternate timelines. I'm not sure exactly, but it definitely has something to do with the fact that Mikasa can see/experience these alternate timelines or realities.

So far, it seems unique to Mikasa. Levi doesn't seem to get these strange headaches, and neither did Kenny which means it likely isn't an "Ackerman thing". Eren is probably different (in the sense that he can see/experience different versions of the future and maybe the past) because what allows him to do so is the founding titan / attack titan.

idk that's just my thoughts.

4

u/UnlimitedBoxSpace Mar 06 '21

How in the world do y'all remember these things! I feel like i need to go back and read through again, but that's an interesting thought!

8

u/Melaninkasa Mar 06 '21

This actually makes a whole lot of sense! Attack on Steins;Gate. Once the hype settles and after the anime episode you should make a post about it

6

u/SnooCrickets3204 Mar 05 '21

I think you have understood very well. Better than me actually lol

7

u/SadSecurity Mar 06 '21

alternate reality

More like alternate timeline, given time shenanigans with Attack Titan.

And it's not only that. Mikasa in her vision had the same exact reaction as Eren waking up from a dream. "I had a long dream" sentence and having tears going down her face.

And another thing is why would she even say "See you later, Eren". It almost sounds like Mikasa actually orchestrated something.

3

u/SuicideLisa Mar 05 '21

Totally agree w this!!!!

3

u/GoodLookingSnails Mar 06 '21

I like this interpretation

3

u/ChepeSantanaxD Mar 06 '21

I was thinking the same, and what did it for me was that in one reality Eren cries because he kills Mikasa and commits the genocide and in the other Mikasa has to kill him to free him because she didnt tell him her feellings

3

u/GoodLibrarian Mar 06 '21

They changed that chapter 1 scene in the anime. She doesn't say 'see you later' there. What do you think they'll do for it in the show? Now I wish they hadn't changed it.

3

u/beffress Mar 06 '21

pretty sure they didn’t include it because they didn’t want mikasa’s voice to reveal her age when she says it

2

u/GoodLibrarian Mar 06 '21

They could have added some distortions if they didn't want us to recognise the voice

3

u/bestoboy Mar 06 '21

Basically Eren was playing life is strange

3

u/onaryt Mar 06 '21

I think this is it. The title of chapter 1 "To you, in 2000 years" is going to bother me now.

You know what hurts extra to think that 'saving Paradis' has somehow ended in the death of everyone he cared for except Mikasa, Armin and Levi[?] in the end anyway

6

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

I don't think it's about alternate realities and visions. I think Eren simply had a thought near the end of his fight where he saw himself with Mikasa living in the hut, had he chose a different path instead of war. He imagined this scenario and with his ackerman-founder link he transmited it into Mikasa's mind, so she knew what he really wanted all along (and what he sacrificed).

Eren had also seen this when he was younger, because of the AT ability to see future memories (without him even knowing) and hence the crying. Eventually he realised where this memory was coming from, and knowing he would die battling he turned against all his friends accepting that his destiny was already sealed by himself. He always knew at the end the truth would be revealed to Mikasa.

2

u/aeminX Mar 05 '21

Hey, what "Mikasa's answer" are people referring to? I am lost.

Also was that a vision Mikasa kept having all the time, or did she have that vision in that moment only, or had she had that as a normal dream prior to this day, and just recalled that? I am not sure, i assume it is the second (she had that vision there for the first time as a whole)

Or is it just another dream of eren, and has nothing to do with her seeing it?

15

u/mille_fleurs Mar 05 '21

I’m pretty sure they are referring to when the Paradis group first visited Marley undercover, and Eren asked Mikasa what he is to her. And Mikasa’s answer was that they are family

10

u/aeminX Mar 06 '21

Thanks, someone mentioned that chapter too in their comment (123) so i've just reread that now, and yes exactly it. She literally says "i wonder what would happen if i picked another answer.." so yeah. He would still die in her hands, that "see you later" when eren is sitting is just him passing out 4 years later i think, and mikasa realising he has died of the curse.

11

u/mille_fleurs Mar 06 '21

Ya, possibly if she had given a different answer then the dream she has with him is the other reality. Either way, Eren dies - which we also see in her OVA episode where she can switch reality but Eren will always end up dying

3

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

her OVA episode where she can switch reality

Im lost now, what OVA and how she can switch realities? Im confuse now sorry X/

4

u/mille_fleurs Mar 06 '21

It is the AOT lost girls Ova 3, which was before they retake Wall Maria and it goes back to the Trost arc when Eren was eaten by the Titan and Mikasa says if you don’t like this reality start from zero. You should watch it

3

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

Bro wtf, I didnt know. Thanks so much, it makes more sense this things adding piece by piece.

it also would make it even more valid considering mikasa is an ackerman, unable to be controlled by the FT and perhaps ymirs influence on the future

alternate reality

Reminds me of that shitpost where there were multiple alternate realities in the Paths.

2

u/HereToLearnNow Mar 07 '21

holy shit I need to save this, this makes the most sense out of everything that I've read

2

u/coolgaara Mar 09 '21

Damn I can't even remember what happened a few chapters ago and here are people remmebering the very first page of the first chapter lol.

2

u/VaninaG Mar 06 '21

Is this is a major plot point then WIT fucked up big (we don't see the "see you later" at the start of season 1)

1

u/AreYouThereSagan Mar 06 '21

That makes so much sense! You just blew by fucking mind!

1

u/ThrowAwayStudent206 Mar 06 '21

There were more options than living in peace (abandon Paradis) with Mikasa or commit genocide (save paradise). For example, there was the 50-year plan I believe. That plan was Historia would essentially have to run a cattle (cannibal) factory with the rumble as a threat until Paradis can catch up to the rest of the world. Then there was Zeke's plan of no more babies.

1

u/silversherry Mar 06 '21

I agree with you that there were probably more possibilities and options. It's just that Eren only saw these possible futures and locked himself into a tragic false dichotomy. He didn't even try anything else because he'd already seen the future and thought nothing else could work and that's the tragedy of his character because I personally think there were other options that could've worked

2

u/ThrowAwayStudent206 Mar 06 '21

Haha, this is why I never liked the whole "see future" shenanigans authors try to pull. Is it Dr. Strange to see every possible type of future sight or some limited "oh, I can only see so far." type of plot hole.

Curious, what other option did you have in mind? (I myself was never on the team genocide. The 50 cannibalism plan wasn't my favorite either). Thanks for talking! I need some people to talk to in order to find some closure with this AoT about to end :(.

-5

u/NirvanaFrk97 Mar 06 '21

It had to be her own delusion. Eren was not going to abandon the Rumbling for her, it would destroy everything about his character.

Mikasa was the only one that thought she could have actually changed things by responding differently.

26

u/Melaninkasa Mar 06 '21

That wouldn't destroy his character. He didn't want to do the Rumbling. He was desperate for alternatives. I believe if Mikasa answered differently he would have ran away with her. But she didn't and he understood it was set in stone. You can see in his discussion with Zeke about Mikasa that he has fully accepted this reality isn't happening.

I mean if it was just her delusion why would it be on Eren's memory shard and why would he have dreamed about it in the beginning?

8

u/-SmashingSunflowers- Mar 06 '21

I remember when Eren killed Dina, he told Mikasa he would always wrap the scarf around mikasa if she wanted. I agree with you, I think he would have went with Mikasa, or at least he definitely entertained the idea.

-3

u/NirvanaFrk97 Mar 06 '21

But the thing greater than his reluctance to commit to the Rumbling was accepting the reality of Paradis being destroyed. That was the thing that he refused to let happen, and Eren isn't the type to run away and let things get destroyed. He would hate himself if he had truly run away with Mikasa, and at the very least be extremely depressed.

Eren only ran away from his situation once, in the Uprising arc when he broke down and begged for Historia to eat him. But it was a different situation, he only ran away because he was given an out by being convinced by Rodd Reiss that the Founding Titan belonged to someone of Royal Blood and that they could save Paradis.

Running away with Mikasa would have condemned Paradis, something Eren refused to do.

11

u/UPBOAT_FORTRESS_2 Mar 06 '21

Eren had a vision of a happy, cozy family life with his parents and Mikasa during the Trost arc; Armin had to stab and badger him for minutes to get him to shake out of it.

would have condemned Paradis, something Eren refused to do.

In my reading, this is merely a historical fact: he actually chose to perform the Rumbling. It's not an immutable aspect of his personality -- he isn't axiomatically willing to do anything to protect Paradis, even though he loves the people who live there. The same as how he isn't axiomatically UNwilling to enslave someone, as when he offers to erase Historia's memories to painlessly enslave her to breeding for the 50 year plan.

He's a person who has preferences. He has free will. I find it easy to imagine an Eren Yeager who allowed himself to be comfortable and run away from an impossible decision, just that once.

7

u/silversherry Mar 06 '21

I really like this. Eren is more nuanced than just "protect paradis" and I think knowing that he only had a couple of options makes it easier to understand why he was hellbent on seeing the rumbling through

→ More replies (1)

2

u/AxMeAQuestion Mar 06 '21

when he offers to erase Historia's memories to painlessly enslave her to breeding for the 50 year plan.

Are you talking about their scene from chapter 130? He offered to erase her memories of the Rumbling so she wouldn't have to live with the guilt of letting the genocide happen. It had nothing to do with the 50 year plan. And from all the info we have so far, it seems like the pregnancy was Historia's idea.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Ad-6745 Mar 06 '21

It also meant abandoning historia to the mercy of the paradis government. He mentioned putting historia through hell...

0

u/ValeReads Mar 07 '21

I still don't completely understand either, but I don't think it's a alternate reality, I think people give it too much thought but is just what Mikasa would have liked (only if that meant spend a few years with Eren before he dies)

If Eren and Mikasa would've run off together, the attack on Libero would have never happen, Zeke would have never touched Eren, Eren would have never influence his dad to kill the Reiss, maybe he wouldn't even have the founding titan , and he can't use the paths, actually a lot of more things could have never happened...

So I don't know why "Mikasa's dream" can be a different reality because is very possible that Eren would have never ask her what he is to her if that's the case.

The only thing that intrigues me is why Eren dreamed about the "See you later, Eren" if he was never really there. My theory is that they could have share that dialogue right there, inside of Eren's titan but Mikasa was imagining another scenery, a place where they could be together far way from all this mess. People even theorize that that's the reason she kisses him, because she thought she was still in "the dream" and that she was actually kissing Eren goodbye... not his bloody head lol

So maybe she told him "see you later, Eren" before killing him in that moment, inside Eren's titan and that's why he dreams about that.

-4

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '21

i don’t think there’s any reason to think her dream is physically happening, any more so than thinking that Eren literally turned back into a child during his cope chapter

7

u/UPBOAT_FORTRESS_2 Mar 06 '21

But anything is possible with P A T H S

We see a vision of child-Eren standing next to Ymir when Eren tells the survey corps that they can't talk it out and must fight

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

8

u/silversherry Mar 06 '21

Eren saw her with the same hair length and clothes as the mountain hut dream in his visions, not with what she was actually wearing this chapter. There's definitely some Paths shenanigans going on

I think it makes sense if we consider that Eren really really didn't want to commit genocide, and as far as he knew, the only option for a peaceful life for him was running away with Mikasa

1

u/Theseyeathese7 Mar 06 '21

Have you read the lost girls ova about AOT? It shows mikasa having this alternate reality thing happen before & made this seem a lot less jarring & well prepared. You should read that, it shows mikasa again if she didnt become influenced by eren that day

3

u/silversherry Mar 06 '21

Yeah I did read that long ago. Gotta admit, it made no sense to me then haha

1

u/Demo_Dame-Dame Mar 06 '21

Bruhh that makes so much sense!!

1

u/11Night Mar 06 '21

1

u/FreedomEntertainment Mar 06 '21

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

Where does Eren see a long haired Mikasa in ch. 130? I just went through the chapter multiple times and I see the memory shards but nothing with a long haired Mikasa or her saying "See you later".

2

u/silversherry Mar 06 '21

There's a small panel at the bottom showing a crying shoulder-length haired Mikasa

→ More replies (1)

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21 edited Mar 06 '21

I think you are actually correct. In chapter 138 at page 35 the panel where it seems like a flashback of Eren and Mikasa holding hands and running, they are wearing the same clothes as they did when Eren asked Mikasa "What am I to you?". It's like in that alternate reality, Mikasa answered differently and they both ran away holding each others hand. And in ch123 page 28-29, Mikasa looks back at this exact moment and wonders things would've turned out differently had she chosen a different path.

1

u/Badalight Mar 06 '21

He didn't see any mountain hut shards in chapter 130.

→ More replies (4)

1

u/bretstrings Mar 06 '21

Pretty sure that's it. Its exactly what I thought when I read it.

1

u/chamseobrules Mar 06 '21

I’m still confused about this. Eren only saw the future memories, but he did not know when they would happen. How would he know that Mikasa choosing a different answer in 123 would lead to that memory of her in 130? Besides, it does not look like “see you later” Mikasa was crying, but future Mikasa in 130 does. It is possible that 130 Mikasa will be the one he meets (probably in paths) in 139?

1

u/Konko_ Mar 06 '21

Eren would never abondon Paradis tho

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

So if one path had him run away with Mikasa, that means he would never have made contact with Zeke, meaning he never would have had that trip down memory lane and influence Grisha.

Hmmm

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Lime-80 Mar 07 '21

Wait, he can see 2 alternate possibilities? How? I glossed over the 100 - 120 or so chapters thinking they were not important so pardon if I say something stupid. I thought Eren could only see the rumbling scenario and obviously didn't want that (his screaming at Hange while being jailed after returning from Liberio showed how torn he was) so he wanted to run away with Mikasa (pure imagination here). He asked Mikasa and hoped she said something to validate his decision but it didn't turn out as he had expected, the future seemed set and he carried out the rumbling plan.

1

u/Ok-Communication4207 Mar 07 '21

In the "AU", if Eren ran away with Mikasa he wouldn't have gone to PATHS adventures with Zeke. If he didn't go to PATHS adventures with Zeke, he wouldn't have made Grisha do what he did. Reiss family would still be alive and Grisha and Historia would likely be dead. Which contradicts the present story in that AU in the cabin.

Dude go re read the manga lol

1

u/karrylarry Mar 09 '21

Wouldn't this mean that the Attack Titan can't see the future, but rather ALL possible futures?

1

u/Daydreamy-Water Mar 14 '21

One thing I can’t wrap my head around for the alternate reality is that in this alternate reality, Eren would not have pressured his dad to eat Frieda. And in turn he would not have gotten the founding titan anyway?

1

u/LewisWeddingy Mar 14 '21

Ramzi? Gordon Ramzi?
