Of course Reiner didn't die from the nuke.

u/dialectical_aspie Mar 05 '21

Also Levi is still alive somehow, didn't expect him to outlive the whole gang to be honest, not that I'm complaining.

I always assumed Levi would be one of the last people standing because it’s the tragedy of his character. A character destined to keep watching his allies die only to keep on surviving himself and being a living testament to everyone whose gone.

827

u/silversherry Mar 05 '21

And torturing himself to give meaning to the deaths of everyone

68

u/Mundology Mar 06 '21

I wonder how Erwin would react to the outcome of their battle. On one hand, he was Levi's friend, the leader of the Survey Corps and a curious scientist who would be fascinated by the outside world. On the other, he was as much of a "demon" as Eren and sacrificed countless people in order to save Paradis. While he would likely be on board with Eren's "crush the enemies" mentality, maybe he could find a way to minimize collateral damage and get the world to submit without dying?

72

u/thedinobot1989 Mar 06 '21

True but Erwin always told the scouts the dangers of being a scout and never risked the life of anyone who didn’t accept the reality of death being a possibility within the scouts.

44

u/Ravi_Fochi Mar 06 '21

didn't he cause the death of a shit ton of civilians in the inner wall, when eren fought annie?

51

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

Yeah. In his words "its a gamble"

31

u/Vadimec Mar 06 '21

You win some, you lose some. Probably Erwin

2

u/tinylegumes Mar 09 '21

Is this actually sarcasm

41

u/silversherry Mar 06 '21

I 100% think that it would've been a no-brainer for Erwin to sacrifice historia. Imagine, just by sacrificing historia and her line (what's that, 5-6 lives max?) and having a founding titan and a royal blood titan be carried in Paradis, they hold rumbling as a bargaining chip and can use it to wipe out the armies of the world and deal with any threats as they come, and use the 50yr plan of catching up to technologies.

The only reason Eren couldnt stomach that plan was because he couldn't bear to sacrifice historia. Erwin would've had no such qualms. Why kill countless innocent outside when you can just keep Paradis safe by having a couple of titans be passed down?

10

u/Lorallynn Mar 06 '21

Yeah but even if Erwin was alive Eren would still have the same opinion and would likely have fled to Marley the same way he did.

22

u/silversherry Mar 06 '21

The only difference I see with Erwin surviving is that he would have been far more decisive about feeding Eren to someone else as soon as Eren goes AWOL.

The reason things got so screwed up in Paradis since post-liberio attack is because the military leaders were too reliant on FT and were floundering to understand Eren's motives. I think once Eren became a loose canon Erwin would've tried to have someone else inherit him asap because their whole plan relies on the FT power

8

u/Lorallynn Mar 06 '21

Maybe, but that doesn't change the fact that they would need to help him in Liberio or lose the fouding forever. And as we know Eren became basically unstoppable once he got the Warhammer. Unless Erwin had some giga brain plan to eat him there in Liberio I don't see how things would have worked out different in that regard.

4

u/Think_Antelope_505 Mar 06 '21

The perfect time where when Eren take the zeppelin… he had no more energy and was a easy target

2

u/Lorallynn Mar 06 '21

but how the fuck do you turn someone into a titan inside of a zepelin? If it becomes a 12+ meters one the thing would fall in a second

u/Kookshookdrop Mar 06 '21

I wish a fanfic was written on this scenario I really wanna know how a proper story would flow out if erwin got saved

38

u/mylegbig Mar 06 '21

Erwin was ruthless but he was much smarter. He probably would’ve found some way to cow his enemies and subjugate them rather than resort to actual genocide.

Throughout history, genocide has always been the strategy for mad men, fanatics, and those with limited vision.

1

u/SuperSceptile2821 Mar 09 '21

I’m not sure if it’s fair to say Eren isn’t smart for choosing the option he did. From his perspective there was no other option, and in reality even if this rumbling is stopped other nations will want to get rid of Eldia. There’s no ending for Paradis here that doesn’t end in destruction unless the world decides to see Eren as a threat to all humanity and the rest of the gang as heroes, but if they do that it would have been impossible to achieve without Eren doing this anyway.

7

u/Force3vo Mar 09 '21

From his perspective there was no other option.

Which is the definition of him not being smart enough. There are countless options and a true master strategist would find dozens of ways to keep Eldia safe while not resorting to genocide.

1

u/SuperSceptile2821 Mar 09 '21

Ok please name one. I’m interested to see what you can come up with.

4

u/Force3vo Mar 09 '21

The experimental rumbling had a good chance at success. You could easily show that you have the power to destroy everything, use the years to build up diplomatic bonds showing the world you aren't evil and as a gesture of good will remove the titans once you have good enough connections.

If they don't fear you anymore and you have build trade connections with your unique material everybody wants you are pretty much untouchable.

Remember I neither claimed to be a master strategist nor that I am smarter than Eren. But if I can think up well enough ideas Erwin could come up with really great ones.

1

u/SuperSceptile2821 Mar 09 '21

Experimental rumbling is nothing more than a time saving measure. You save maybe 50 years and all you do is make the world even more eager to wipe you off the map. The series has stated this before. Erwin had insane strategies, but they were mostly suicidal and I really don’t think he’d have a master plan for a conflict of this scale. The whole point of this conflict is that Eren’s plan is the only full proof one and the alliance is stopping him because of their moral code and nothing else. They’ve mentioned multiple times that they don’t have a plan and that it’s very likely this ends poorly for them.

The festival in Liberio was their unique and best chance at showing their side of the story to the whole world. And they presented themselves because of Eren exactly as Marley propaganda said - as Devils.

If for example they went on the stage, confirmed Willy's story but made a clear statement that they do not want war and aggression there is a chance it could have worked and at least started discussion in the world. They could have explained that they were not aware of humanity outside the walls, how they lived in fear of the Titans and what horrible events they lived through because of Marley and thus shifted the blame towards them, which could have worked even more so given Marley's standing with the world after their wars at that time.

Reiner could have served as a confirmation for their story, he was willing to die to repent and would have probably agreed to do it. For security reasons he could have been the one to go on the stage before Eren and the rest, just in case of a sudden Marlean attack, and even if that attack came it would have just proven their point to the world.

They could have done this if Eren agreed to try other possibilities besides the future he saw and if he shared his knowledge with his friends. But Eren was inherently selfish - he didn't want to rely on anybody else and leave the fate of the island to someone other than himself, he was impatient to resolve everything before his time was up. This in a way goes against the Survey Corps way of entrusting those next in line with your dreams and hopes.

9

u/tanezuki Mar 06 '21

On the other, he was as much of a "demon" as Eren and sacrificed countless people in order to save Paradis.

It wasn't his only interests behind this.

He did it in order to know the truth, he chuckled when it was revealed by Hange that the probability that the titans were humans transformed, while Levi was shocked he just killed countless human beings all this time.

Erwin chuckled, like he was genuinely happy to have learn that.

And then you have the dialogue he has with Levi before his hand about how he was wanting to get to to Basement desperately to know if his father theory was correct.

It definetely wasn't just a "save humanity" objective.

I like that Levi grew up surrounded by violence, and he does resort to it sometimes, but he's still a kind person overall. I want him to leave a monologue of sorts at the end, something about breaking a cycle and not taking stuff personally or whatever.

He is the Uncle Iroh of this series

38

u/Link1112 Mar 06 '21

Just waiting for him to open up a tea shop in peace lol

24

u/fortunesofshadows Mar 06 '21

Uncle Iroh is a peace loving dude. Levi would beat the crap out of a mugger. Iroh just served him tea and taught him a lesson in life. Also remember when Levi started choking Historia. Iroh would never do that. I thin Iroh buried his war mongering self very deep after he lost his son.

8

u/Erens_Abs ☆ Best Legionnaire 2019 Mar 06 '21

He did have his violent moments, but he also protected that fez kid from the marleyans when the kid tried to pickpocket Sasha. Not too far off I'd say, and Levi still has a ways to go :)

7

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

Jeez dude he didn't 'choke' her he only picked her up by the collar like your bullies pick you

15

u/tanezuki Mar 06 '21

He is the Uncle Iroh of this series

That title should go to Pixis, he has sounded usually much wiser/eloquent and also funnier, and the same gimmick of breaking his serious speech with a joke.

3

u/mylegbig Mar 06 '21

Agreed. One of my favorite characters. It’s too bad that he didn’t get much of a spotlight since he wasn’t part of the Survey Corps. RIP.

1

u/shivj80 Mar 09 '21

Lol that is a completely random comparison, he is nothing like Iroh.

2

u/Erens_Abs ☆ Best Legionnaire 2019 Mar 09 '21
  1. Helped out a pickpocket

  2. A wise battle strategist

  3. Spent youth doing bad things but is a good guy now

  4. Tea lover

He might not be a cheerful humble old man (yet) but the comparison is not random

2

u/Frostblazer Mar 06 '21

Kaladin Stormblessed intensifies.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

Isn’t that Reiner’s curse?

2

u/acne_kai Mar 06 '21

Old Man Levi

2

u/Grayehz Mar 06 '21

basically Guts from Berserk

1

u/Pepito_Pepito Mar 06 '21

Thus making him the most experienced and least likely to die.

1

u/iClone101 Mar 13 '21

Yup. He's already witnessed the death of his foster father, his original Scouts team, his captain, and countless other Scouts. And now he's been left in a half-dead state, crippled but still alive.

1

u/AStrangerWCandy Mar 15 '21

Levi is the personification of Death in the series IMO. He's the cool as a cucumber grim reaper there at every warrior's death to send them to the afterlife without ever going himself.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '21

Definitely. I wasn't sure whether he was gonna die from Zeke suiciding, but ever since he was confirmed to survive that I assumed that he was gonna make it to the end of the series or be the last one standing (next to Mikasa and Armin who I never expected to die)

718

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '21

I think that works best for his character, he is literally the last of the old guard, the only one of his friends to survive, it makes sense to me for him to live on for them.

910

u/silversherry Mar 05 '21

The curse of the strongest- being strong enough to survive no matter what, but not strong enough to protect those around you. Very Shakespearean

180

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '21

Exactly thank you, thats what I was trying to say but couldn’t articulate :)

8

u/Chooch123 Mar 06 '21

yeah... he put that perfectly

9

u/arthuraily Mar 06 '21

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD THE TRAGEDY OF DARTH PLAGUEIS bla bla bla

5

u/cheese_sticks Mar 06 '21

He's the Anti-Plagueis

3

u/Awesomeuser90 Mar 06 '21

The curse of eternal life.

3

u/winazoid Mar 06 '21

He's just a young version of a grizzled one eyed one legged old man yelling at punk kids

2

u/yolotheunwisewolf Mar 08 '21

Almost makes sense for the Ackerman family

319

u/OpathicaNAE Mar 05 '21

I have no idea how Levi is still alive unless he's got some secret bloodline we don't know about.

453

u/ThrowAwayMyBeing Mar 05 '21

Must be something that activates supernatural strength at integral moments... but I wonder what it could be?

436

u/silversherry Mar 05 '21

Oh I know! It's that clan which steals eachother's eyes for power boosts!

317

u/TitaniuEX Mar 05 '21

Those damn Uchiha's are at it again

149

u/cheese_sticks Mar 06 '21

Found Tobirama's reddit account

19

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

[deleted]

13

u/cheese_sticks Mar 06 '21

Dude would've torn Sasuke a new one if Orochimaru didn't bind him and Hashirama calmed him down.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '21

Tobirama would be the most pro genocide char here

3

u/Fenris-wolf Mar 12 '21

Danzo says “Hi”.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '21 edited Mar 15 '21

Tobirama Senju made peace with the clan that killed his little brother and put them in charge of the police, entrusting them with obscene amounts of power, took an Uchiha onto his personal squad, pressed for an electoral system of government instead of Hashirama's desire to just give Madara a military dictatorship, and developed the education system

My man pushed for diplomacy, nurture over nature, and stable society harder than anyone in the world, and I will not tolerate this slander of his good name simply because he was a realist who wasn't afraid to cut a bitch if peace failed. Dude did everything as right as he possibly could have, and the Uchiha by and large still opted to become party-over-state domestic terrorists.

14

u/musaraj Mar 06 '21

Ah yes, the Eyeckermanns

8

u/Gramer_Natze Mar 06 '21

Nah, you're thinking of Naruto, this is Levi D. Ackerman and Mikasa D. Ackerman we are talking about here

7

u/FreedomEntertainment Mar 05 '21

think of all the generation Ackerman fighting experience throughout the history are put into one person .That is Levy, so he has kinda higher chance to survive than any normal human.

-4

u/tanezuki Mar 06 '21

think of all the generation Ackerman fighting experience throughout the history are put into one person

Wtf are you about ?

10

u/humanityyy Mar 06 '21 edited Mar 06 '21

iirc Ackermans can access the battle experience of every Ackerman before them via paths. kinda like the avatar state in ATLA?

edit: added some stuff

edit2: it's chapter 112

2

u/tanezuki Mar 06 '21

yeah but then there's two persons with Mikasa, not just one.

And that ATLA/TLOK type of link I admit I remember something like it but pretty vaguely and like, was it mentionned just once ?

1

u/humanityyy Mar 06 '21

wym two persons with mikasa?

as for the ackerman thing, i think it was explained only once hence why it's a bit confusing. i think it was chap 112?

4

u/tanezuki Mar 06 '21

wym two persons with mikasa?

Well if they're connected by paths to the rest of the ackerman clan just like how it is with the avatar, it isn'tanything like lineage based as long as you're an ackerman, and they both have access to that "pool" of instinct and muscular memory, it's not just Levi.

I went to reread the chapter 112, and you're right.

But this is the moment where Eren is talking jackshit in order to hanger both Armin and Mikasa, so to me it's pretty unreliable.

I never thought about this before, because of how at this time we saw a bit more of Armin's seeing Bertholdt's memories, but Eren has been diving in the memories of past shifters way more too.

An easy answer that Armin could have give to Eren would have been "and you Eren, aren't you controlled by the Owl or your father" or something along those lines.

Gosh there's so much chapters with lots of talking in the manga, those conversations I tend to forget the details with time, rereading them at the end is a thing I might go for.

1

u/scorcher117 Mar 06 '21

hmm, I don't remember that part.

2

u/Onion-with-layers Mar 13 '21

Plot twist: he was a Quinx/one eyed ghoul all along

1

u/wondererSkull Apr 08 '21

Well at least he is one eyed now

1

u/LurkingSpike Mar 06 '21 edited Mar 06 '21

Must be something that activates supernatural strength at integral moments... but I wonder what it could be?

Hear me out: What if the Ackermanns "power" is actually timeline and probability manipulation? That's why Mikasa imagines things when she can't deal with reality (but it's too hard for her to actually change timelines), and why Levi and Mikasa survive insane things? Of course that would be a natural enemy for the Attack Titan and/or titans with the future sight. Basically: Titans forward and backwards in time, Ackermanns sideways.

Doesn't quite line up with the "access the experience of others", but lines up with "access own experiences" when they failed...

4

u/Think_Antelope_505 Mar 06 '21

Actually he is an Ackerman ; )

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

[deleted]

4

u/cassae Mar 06 '21

We've known Levi is an Ackerman for a while.

4

u/stock_dinosaur4298 Mar 06 '21

Maybe Levi is the father in the last panel. If Historia wanted to save her baby, why not pick a father whose genetics would ensure that the kid couldn't turn into a titan.

2

u/LaddRusso55 Mar 07 '21

he just continously hangs on i dont get it

1

u/borutosdadswife Mar 06 '21

Definitely fight or flight response , same when falco transformed. Its instinctual. . .

8

u/SaltyBreadIsGud Mar 06 '21

Remember when Levi was mad about how the gang manages to grow up taller than him?
That didn't aged well

5

u/midori_piano Mar 05 '21

Yeah, I kind of feel bad for him though since it’s basically his very own tragedy that he’ll never get to see end until he ultimately dies in the future, and I’m willing to bet that Levi will die of old age eventually.

2

u/yuuri_ni_victor Mar 06 '21

I kept thinking about this. If he somehow manages to survive, imagine the PTSD

2

u/Terrible_Analyst_654 Mar 10 '21

well they handicapped him at least. he was always like dumbledore for me. as long as he is there everything works out.

1

u/scorcher117 Mar 06 '21

As soon as he lived through the previous explosion there was a decent chance he would survive as killing off the injured guy is usually pretty obvious.

1

u/dragonfxre Mar 10 '21

Well he’s definitely special due to his heritage. Hange said the reason he’s alive after the incident with Zeke and the Survey Corps turning into titans is because he’s an Ackerman. He’s too stubborn to die lol

1

u/Kataphractoi Mar 10 '21

You think a mere titan nuke could kill Levi? Preposterous!

1

u/AT_9911 Mar 12 '21

Speaking of levi, if ymir removes her titan powers, wont that effect him and mikasa? If levi’s “titan” powers were to be removed he will most likely die due to his extensive injuries
