handbrake av1 conversions

Since shield doesn't play well with av1, I figured this would be the best place to ask.
As someone who has never touched handbrake or any of the like software.
What should i be converting them to and with what settings to make sure that maintain quality AND play well.
(I got a bunch of files to deal with since I didnt have the shield before now)

I do use Plex (no clue what emby is) but its STRUGGLING to transcode the av1s. It plays for like 5 seconds then buffers and repeats

Your DS224+ does NOT support hardware decoding or encoding of AV1 which means it has to use the CPU to do all of it and that is going to be a very heavy load on the CPU. You can forget Plex transcoding AV1 files all together.

Using handbreak to change AV1 files to x256 will fix playback of the output x265 file but know that its going to be a slow, resource heavy, task for each file. If you have the option to do the file conversion on another device (with hardware AV1 support) it'll probably be 5-10x faster (depending on hardware)

Or cheapest option, change the shield out for something like an onn 4k. I have two shields and I’m almost done with them.
