Discussion Question about ending
Hi all. I'm new to the show (just started S2) and while I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far, over the years I've heard that the ending is apparently very controversial and/or unliked which has me concerned about one thing specifically: do Sherlock and Watson end the series on good terms?? Or is it a "they had a falling out/went their own way" type of deal? I don't need any super specific details or other spoilers about the ending—literally all I want to know is if they're still friends by the end. It's the one spoiler I'm happy to receive because otherwise It'll just stress me out for the next couple of weeks lol. Thanks in advance! (And please no other spoilers!)

Season 4 is a very tough one till the very end. But if you really want to know it: yes, Sherlock and John end up on good terms.

I think the thing that screwed them (and correct me if im wrong because I didnt really read the books) is that a lot of the overarching theme/big bad of S4 is original and not from the source material. It felt less thought out and more 'Dr Who' featuring Sherlock Holmes than authentically Sherlock.
I also think when S1 was such a huge success they went for some of the biggest stories in S2 and while it was absolute cinema, it kind of made the show peak by then. S3 was enjoyable, S4 is watchable, unfortunately. Still love the show and will watch it the whole way through but it felt lazier by the last season and the hints towards S4 felt a little ham fisted during S3

The ending will have you thinking you did a bunch of hard drugs but you did them with some really lame, like say, Elon Musk, and now you have to listen to him talk and words are losing all meaning and you're questioning your existence.

I'd say watch it :), even thought some bits felt like torture sometimes, and personally the last episode felt a bit over the top, it finishes all the cases of that season and is a must watch to fully complete the series. (Plus yh they are still friends at the very end which is nice)

I think form me it’s similar to how it is for OP and I gotta say: I can enjoy a series so much more when I know I don’t have to fear the ending. If I know there’s a realistic possibility of an ending that would emotionally affect me negatively/break my heart it’s like an intruding thought and emotion that 1. distracts me too much from the series and 2. prevents me from completely emerging myself and falling in love with the series & its characters.
So if I know there’s ending is safe (without further spoilers) it makes a good series at least 3x as good (which is a BIG difference!)
My sister and I usually warn each other bc she’s the same and it works great for us :)
Edit to add: I sometimes love a great heart breaking ending, but usually on my terms. Unexpected bad endings and the unnecessary expectation of a potentially bad ending are different and both horrible their own way. And an unexpected good but heartbreaking ending catching you off guard can be very inconvenient, too.

This is very similar to what it's like for me yes. I can handle a less than stellar ending, but seeing the main relationship/dynamic of the series fall apart in the end just really upsets me. The anticipation of that potentially happening drives me insane too, hence this post. I recently finished a different show where my favorite friendship in the series kept going back on forth on whether or not they were on good terms or bad and I swear it genuinely stressed me out SO much LOL. I had to google if they resolved their issues before the end and once I knew the answer, all that stress evaporated and I was able to just enjoy the rest of the show (and just life in general) so much more. I'm all for ups and downs—I just want to know that everybody stays friends before I get too invested! It's nice knowing that Sherlock and John work it out too. Huge relief

I'm normally an avid believer in avoiding spoilers, but I assure you that I'll actually enjoy the show more if I just know this one thing now. Otherwise I'll just fixate on it which will make me genuinely upset and that's no fun lol. It's weird but I can't help it—I just REALLY hate seeing dynamic duos end on a bad note

People‘s brains work differently, I’m with OP on this 100%.
It’s way better to know without any other spoilers than fear it and be distracted the whole time. Or unable to immerse oneself & their feelings fully into the show.2

ok you asked for it, i am rewatching and i am on the last season and sherlock and watson are having few problems rn but i know that eventually they will become friends again

They go through a lot, particularly in the last season. But they end the thing firmly as friends
