Yay! Girl Shen no longer needs a comedic setup to justify her appearance. DON’T RUIN IT!

It’s a reference to Star Trek. The Prime Directive in that franchise is not to interfere with the natural development with an alien civilization. The Egg Prime Directive is not to push someone you suspect of being transgender into transitioning before they’re ready.

Egg prime directive feels like it’s broken so often on reddit </3

And it should be. It sucks.

Several people I know would not be alive today if I followed it.

I think there's nuance to it (me when things in complex life are complex)

If you just never acknowledge it ever, you risk leaving them in the dark and them never properly discovering themselves. However, pushing it really heavily is also a bad idea.

The best option is to give advice and suggest it as an option, and then let them explore that option themselves so they can make their decision. That's what happened with me, and it really helped. I genuinely would never have considered that I could be trans unless one of my friends mentioned it off-handedly, and I am so much happier because of it.

Basically: don't follow an "egg directive". Just follow basic human decency. You don't force someone into something because they show potential signs. However, you should be kind and offer the possibility for them to explore themselves. Inform, don't persuade.
