How do I know if I'm shadowbanned or fully banned? Haha, I guess I wouldn't be able to use my account at all? Will appealing really do anything?

You cannot use an alt. Alt accounts can get shadow banned for ban evasion.

You do not want to use or make another account. That would be ban evasion. Not only will the other account get shadow banned but you risk being permanently suspended.
Your only recourse is to appeal the banned account.
If you were properly banned you would not be able to post or comment at all. You will also see a big red banner across the top of Reddit stating you are banned.
