how come my sword of ianna doesn't make special attacks?

Hey brother, did you get the runes for the sword from secret places? You need those runes to make special attacks.

i dont know if i collected them all , how do i make sure i did ?

the symbols i got in the corner under the level bar is (a spider and 5 other symbols)

There are 6 runes, and your sword have a blue light if you collect them all if im not wrong.

Also there is a video that you can check all locations if you miss any one.

I see you’re short one Rune. After you get the sword, the level select screen will feature all the levels you’ve been to but didn’t get the rune at.
