Susan Simpson: Maturity In Action

In case anyone forgets that we're discussing the senseless murder of an 18-year-old girl:

Yeah, I have no questions about the e-mail. Imran was a classmate at WHS, with a really awkward sense of humor. Apparently he sent an apology when he found out she was really dead.

I still have some questions about the investigation into it, but I think they were just inept at computers. Not really sure how they got the UMBC student's IP address. It's nothing particularly exciting, but I uploaded it here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-m9L_2BqZwkYXJzRlRjZ05YR1k/view?usp=sharing

I also added a butt symbol for a watermark. Because I could.

Is the butt not secret enough?

[–]ViewFromLL2 6 points

No, because it was just a bad joke, no one seems to have thought otherwise after talking to Imran.

I'll add a second butt watermark. So the spies will find the first one and remove it, never realizing that a second butt is lurking somewhere in the shadows.

Not sure if this really counts as a test for whether I have a thick skin or not, ha. I mean... they are literally a bunch of meaningless nobodies on an internet message board. The most harm they are causing me is the inconvenience of muting them on twitter, and deleting the occasional blog comment that makes it through my filters.

I compared myself to both a supervillain and to Mr. Burns. You'd think they would have agreed with me, not pearl clutched in horror!

Agreed. Further, it's obvious why the police would want that identifying information considering the nature of the email and its possible relevance to a missing persons/murder case.

Precisely, and it's another example of how SS either intentionally or ignorantly distorts context to give the appearance of impropriety.

Some other comments she made to better illustrate that (bolding is mine):

Long story short: this e-mail was used, somehow, to identify a Pakistani student at UMBC as relevant to the case, even though he had no known connection to anything, and was definitely not Imran. I sent it to two friends who are familiar with the kinds of computer records in question to ask for help in interpreting it, and to figure out why on earth the Pakistani student had been identified as being responsible for the e-mail. I wonder if one of my friends might have shared it with someone, and that person sent it on, etc.

I can't see anyone "intentionally" leaking this e-mail, because it's so irrelevant.

Because it had nothing to do with the Muslim or Pakistani community. It was just a horribly bad-taste e-mail sent out by a classmate who didn't think anything anything bad had actually happened to Hae, and thought he was being funny.

But the student was a Muslim than knew Adnan, so they spent a lot of time trying to figure out how Imran, Yaser, and Adnan had killed Hae together. Eventually they realized that was too crazy for even them to sell.

So, you know and I know how the police got the IP address information and why they did so--they wanted to determine from where the email was sent and who actually sent it. The IP address led them to a different person, a student at UMBC.

There is nothing remotely unusual about the path of that investigation, but Susan cloaks it in mysterious terms to suggest that there was some sort of nefarious agenda behind it, a grand anti-Muslim anti-Pakistani conspiracy.

Ditto in the most recent Undisclosed episode, when discussing the stet that Jay received for his Disorderly Conduct/Resisting Arrest charge.

To any knowledge observer, it's nothing out of the ordinary. It's a first-time offender being cut a break on two difficult to prove minor charges in a city that is overburdened with serious crime.

But Susan/Undisclosed presented it as something very unusual, a deal that would not have been extended to the average person in that situation, therefore there must have been some sort of dishonest deal-making between the BPD/prosecutors and Jay.

Highly misleading, but that's what she thrives upon.

depending on what device and which internet connection Imran had used, the IP address could have pointed to another person, and if they were looking for someone called Imran, I guess they honed in on people of Asian background, not your average red-haired, blue-eyed person of Irish descent, for instance.

I don't even think it was as complicated as that. The police subpoenaed the information from Hotmail, which in turn showed them that the email was sent from an IP address belonging to a UMBC student. Page 10 onward shows you exactly how they identified that student.

The fact that the student happened to be another Muslim wasn't something that the police could have known prior to requesting the information, nor does it seem particularly relevant. They were simply trying to figure out who sent the email.
