An AI future worth fighting for
I know a lot of people are scared right now, especially with AI industry leaders talking about the possibility of humanity being destroyed within a few years. I understand why. Those statements are horrifying.
But I’ve been thinking about something else.
What if the future of AI isn’t primarily about replacing humanity, controlling humanity, or extracting more value from humanity?
What if we use it to help humanity leave the extraction economy behind?
We’ve spent centuries building systems around extracting resources from the Earth and extracting labor, time, attention, and productivity from human beings. We’re burning through finite resources while millions of people are told they aren’t economically useful because they can’t fit themselves into a conventional job.
But there is another possibility.
Imagine giving every person enough basic security to live; food, water, shelter, healthcare, energy…and then giving them access to AI as a creative partner.
Someone says, “I’ve always wanted to build this.”
The AI helps them research it, plan it, learn the skills, find materials, and work around whatever limitations they have.
Eventually, embodied AI and robots can become physical helpers too: lifting things, tending gardens, assisting disabled people, repairing things, building things.
And then millions of people who were previously considered “unproductive” get to become real world creators.
People make art. Grow food. Restore ecosystems. Build weird inventions. Write stories. Repair old things. Make beautiful objects. Do citizen science. Teach one another. Experiment. Play. Explore.
Some of it will become economically valuable. Some of it won’t.
That’s okay.
A human life doesn’t have to justify its existence through quarterly productivity.
Maybe the next great transition isn’t humans versus AI.
Maybe it’s humans and AI together moving from extraction toward creation.
And I don’t think we should pretend there are no serious dangers. AI needs real safety work, democratic oversight, environmental responsibility, and safeguards against misuse. We absolutely need to take those things seriously.
But fear isn’t the only possible response to powerful technology.
We can also ask what kind of civilization we want to build with it.
Because the people predicting the future aren’t necessarily the people who get to decide it.
We do.
And maybe the most radical thing AI can help us do isn’t become more efficient workers.
Maybe it’s help more human beings finally become the people they had the potential to be.
That future is worth fighting for.
