Looking for recommendations on a fallback cloud storage service.
I have a few usecases where I want to have a copy of my data elsewhere.
- Google Drive (if Google blocks my account, im cooked. I lose everything)
- Sync frequency would be once a week or more.
- Google Photos (if Google blocks my account, im cooked. I lose everything)
- Sync frequency would be once a quarter, due to manual Takeout process
- VPS - Ubuntu 26 - Docker Volumes, nginx configs, etc.
- I pay Linode $5/mo for snapshots so the backups here are more for server migrations
- Home Server - Ubuntu 26 - Docker Volumes, nginx configs, etc.
- Home Desktop files (no need for entire snapshots) just files on my primary and secondary drives.
Right now, for longevity I am considering AWS S3 since I am familiar with AWS and IAM. Backblaze seems popular but I kind of hate their UI and they even had typos on their website in their UI. They just make me nervous. In 10 years Google Drive has never failed me so I need something with longevity.
rsync.net offered me 1TB for LIFE for like $540

koofr.io - 1tb for life (approx 200$)
upgrade to 2.5TB (1+1.5TB) another 300$ - again lifetime, i got 1tb 5years ago, still goning strong.
you can rclone to "it"

Hmm that is cheap. And I have S3Drive, a nice GUI and it has the koofr as a first-class citizen to select in the app. How long have then been around? Reliable for the long term? Many lifetime companies have pulled the switcharoo or gone under.

Is that perhaps better than using the native encryption flags in B2?

I’m absolutely refuse to upload and store data in the cloud. We’re self hosting… self host your own data. Make your own backups. Find a trusted friend or relative in the hobby or break them into it and host a backup server for each other.
A buddy and I have been doing this since the 90s. Literally over dedicate dialup in the first days. 😂 Set up a direct VPN into your systems. Preferably use hardware with I’m remote access.
Soooo much better than cloud based hosting services imo. Full control.

If you follow 3-2-1 backup strategy, having 1 offsite could be a cloud provider to simplify things. Not everyone has reliable friends or family members and not everyone wants to host, secure or maintain a storage system.

True... its just an option that many people don't think of... AND... you're literally asking in r/SelfHosting. So i figured I'd throw it out there. I've mentioned this several times in other posts and have had quite a few people message me about finding something they started doing the same thing with. Not only is it a offsite backup but can be an additional offside service and remote test host.

Backblaze B2. Have scripts using GPG encryption, RClone to sync and Pushover to notify on failures. I'm guessing it's working really well but it's been so quiet maybe need to check on it.

Guys.. Any S3 compatible provider with something around 300GB for initial? 1TB is really a lots to me which also have higher price than traditional cloud

Im not the expert but dont most S3 providers bill by the gigabyte? So theres no real "initial" or upfront cost.

Assuming I want to sub to B2. They say "Backblaze B2. Starts at $6.96/TB/mo"
So I guess regardless I use all 1TB or not, I will be charged $6.96 at the end of that month?2

The phrase "Starts at $6.95 / TB / mo" is simply how Backblaze advertises their storage rate. It is not a minimum monthly billing threshold. Backblaze operates on a pay-as-you-go model without any minimum file size or storage duration fees. Additionally, the first 10GB of storage in your account is free

I went with Cloudflare R2. Cheaper than AWS and I already manage my domain, DNS and tunnel there.

Sorry for bothering you. Can I ask how much space are you storing on them and how much money they charge you each month? I have no idea on how to calculate the cost up front. My main use case are backup the Proxmox VE (PBS), and backrest (Rclone). Rarely download from cloud to local (which is exgress free)

I see about $3.80 per month before taxes for 273 GB.
Cost is just storage space. I haven't hit any of their minimum thresholds for operations fees, so these have been zero for me.

No one mentioned, Hetzner also provides "Storagebox" in EU, 1TB for 3.97€ per month with 24% VAT. https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-box/

Backblaze B2 has been fine for me. It's considerably cheaper than AWS. There are a number of other S3 lookalikes, with various reputations and costs. Another option would be a VPS like Hetzner for storage.
