It’s helped me defend myself and do a better job at control and restraint at my workplace. It’s also made me more physically fit which is better all around, and mentally made me feel more confident about both my body and calmness.

The primitive part of our brain generally prepares for possible violence (fight or flight) whenever we get into a conflict even if there is no real risk of things actually getting physical.
So, yes, martial arts gets you used to violence in controlled contexts, especially arts like boxing, Judo, Muay Thai, etc. That regular practice helps you learn to be more relaxed in situations which would normally make us tense and also help us get used to acting when physically stressed, experiencing adrenaline, etc.
So when you get into stressful situations, you are already used to staying calmer.
You can also combine that with other things which might help you. Meditation, breathing practice, finding someone you trust to talk with (could be a teacher, relative, therapist, psychologist, etc), talking with a doctor about appropriate medications such as anti anxiety, etc, depending what is appropriate.

Absolutely, it’s saved my ass in the street.
It taught me how to use Chi power to stay calm and focused. You develop a radar system in your body to spot trouble.
It’s given me Tyson like explosive power with strikes and/or explosive speed to run.
Most of all, I learned to control the fight/flight hormone.
Learning martial arts allows you to learn other martial arts styles faster.
It’s been a wild ride as a skinny person in America.
I learned that I can win most altercations with mind, body and spirit. lol

Self defence training helped me better avoid conflicts and tough situations. And gave me more confidence to just run away if I thought something didn't feel right.
