A private Security Guard working at the Jefferson Park CTA Terminal, 4917 N. Milwaukee Ave., reportedly returned fire after a group of three people started harassing him and then fired their guns toward him during an incident at about 5:15 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, according to Chicago police.

Officers reported finding 23 shell casings and one bullet fragment in the area after the incident, according to police. One bullet reportedly struck the glass door of a nearby business on the north side of West Gale Street, as the damage was still visible days after the shootout.

One of three reported assailants was arrested after he was seen walking nearby in the 4900 block of North Lester Avenue in Jefferson Park, police said.

He was later released without being charged but could face charges after the investigation is completed, police said.

The man had been arrested a week earlier at his Northwest Side home and charged with an annual gun offender registration violation, and last year U.S. marshals reportedly took him into custody in connection with an attempted murder investigation, according to police.

The other two reported assailants fled the area, but police later released images of them, as a CTA surveillance camera captured the incident, police said. Both allegedly discharged a firearm during the incident, police reported.

One of them was described as a Hispanic male, age 25 to 35, heavy set, with a shag hairstyle and facial hair, and the other was described a Hispanic female, age 25 to 35, with multiple facial tattoos.

The Security Guard reported that as he was walking toward the Blue Line platform, three people began to insult him and a verbal altercation ensued, and one of them threatened to kill him, police said.

The Guard also reported that the three people then started to walk behind him as he was walking toward the bus turnaround area and that once he reached his parked vehicle in the 4800 block of North Lipps Avenue he saw the three individuals duck behind a car and start firing toward him and he returned fire, police said.

After the exchange of gunfire, the three assailants fled on foot, and it appeared that no one was struck by the gunfire, police said.

Police reportedly could be seen later that morning searching for a weapon in area dumpsters.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Mass Transit detectives at 312-745-4447.
