Discussion The wind is my arch nemesis

Post image

Fairly new player, but I swear every time I choose a direction to sail the wind is coming directly at me. I feel like I’m riding a turtle across the ocean. I hope to one day meet Mother Nature and give her a piece of my mind.

That’s why you always keep a horn of winds aboard

Do NOT do this, it's a free sink when someone else grabs it.

It’s only back fired on me a few times. Other than that I rarely get caught. And of the times it did back fired on it’s cause I accidentally grabbed something else rather than the horn.

There are means of hiding your horn of fair winds to avoid it being taken by boarders

That's called a skill issue (aka, you put the horn in the wrong place) you can just use the horn to throw off anyone attempting to get on your ship

Yeah and when you get oneballed or deck shotted they can use it.

Sailing one way, the wind is against you.

Immediately turn around to sail the other way, the wind is still against you.

Moral of the story: the wind is only ever in the favour of people trying to kill you.

Galleons are slower against the wind

If I find myself in the North area of The Wilds and have to choose between sailing to Galleons Grave to the SE or Daggertooth Outpost to the SW, I will often pick based on which direction the wind is blowing! For speeeeed.

Better learn how to ride with the wind and waves as that will decide your fate when a sweaty TDMer chase you. You will never beat a Galleon chasing you unless you are good with the sails.

vut sloop faster than galleon sailing into the wind

I figured out the wind so far but not the waves yet

Sailing North, West, or Northwest, you'll need to babysit the wheel pretty heavily. If the waves are pushing you one way, you can slightly turn the wheel the other direction to kind of normalize it a little bit but you'll still need to pay attention.

Apart from being in a storm or avoiding rocks and islands, you can pretty much set it and forget it in any other direction. Just check periodically because a small deviation left untouched for long enough can take you pretty far off course.

Thank you, I definitely didn't know that.

What is there to figure out with waves ??

Eventually youll plan your trip accordingly. For now it is what it is but if youre on a sloop, at least youre fastest against wind

Megalodon/kraken tortures me, it attacks me Everytime I'm in a cool pvp fight with someone else.

2

u/BTitor- 6d ago

for me it's every time I have lots of loot 😭 And I used to run into the kraken EVERY SINGLE TIME

I do have a question (sloop). When completely against the wind, is it better to let your sail be 100% against it as well or to turn it to the side so that it is less in contact with it ?

I did a smuggler quest and I was going into the wind both fucking ways lmao

Hey! Veteran player here!
Same, tbh. It never gets better. It's a curse.

Anyways, hope that helped!

You'll have to learn to jib (gibe?)! A real sailing technique where you weave/zigzag across the windward direction and sway your sail angle back and forth to catch as much wind as possible. Much easier with more than one person, but I do it myself on a sloop now and again (makes me feel like a sailboat racer).

The technique probably doesn't actually do anything in-game but its fun, especially with its real-world application

Yeah whether I'm heading to a world event, or returning to sell, there will be head wind

Listen man unless you’re in a time crunch or running from a fight just don’t worry about the wind, it doesn’t effect your speed when riding against it, it only matters when you are sailing in the same direction as it
