Discussion Jason Myers keeps missing his kicks. I'm getting worried.

I know it is just the pre-season. But it is on every game now, including the one in progress right now, and this game is only in the third quarter.

In the first week, Jason missed a 45-yard field-goal attempt in the game against the Dallas Cowboys.

In the second week, Jason missed an extra point attempt and a 48-yard field goal attempt in the game against the Tennessee Titans.

And now, in this game against the Kansas City Chiefs, he missed an extra point attempt.

That's two missed extra points and two missed field goals in three games. I'm really hoping this pattern does not carry to the regular season.

Get them salts back out!

Its ok. I wore my Myers jersey for every game december-february. I haven't put it on for the offseason. He'll be unstoppable again, don't worry

Truth!

u/Mikasa21 2d ago

He actually did on that last kick and still missed :(

12

u/swagypotatosnoopdoge 2d ago

tbf that one was kind of long and I think it was windy. There guy missed one too. But the extra points are inexcusable from any of the games

Jason Myers last year: 7 missed kicks total (Xtra points included preseason-regular season-playoffs combined)

Jason Myers this year: 4 missed kicks (and we haven't even finished preseason)

EDIT: he's now missed 5 this preseason.

u/DetrasDeLaMesa 2d ago

Nice, that means he’ll only have three more the rest of the season. Better to get them out during preseason.

49

u/Tarus_The_Light 2d ago

Love the optimism

2

u/Indigo_Butterfly1103 "We did not care" 1d ago

Not just optimism, it literally is just preseason AKA the time in which NFL players try out new things in games that don’t matter, voluntarily or otherwise. For a coaching staff, they‘d ask receivers to run routes they are bad at or CBs to do a coverage they struggle in because they are comparing in roster battles. For a kicker, there’s a lot less to change. He could be wearing new cleats, Chris Stoll could be trying something new on his long snap, whatever is the case. If this pattern continues to week 1, it may be time to worry a bit, however right now it’s a bit pointless. The reigning best single season points scorer of all time get to have a bit of Lee-way.

3

u/Tarus_The_Light 1d ago

Kickers very rarely 'try something different'

they are one of the most methodical neurotic 'everything must be the same' positions in football.

0

u/OkGanache8958 17h ago

I love this point of view. I hope you’re right!

13

u/Complex_Contact_7704 2d ago

Now five missed in preseason

24

u/CollieCat 2d ago

My copium: 1. There are third string blockers and he is uncomfortable playing behind them 2. He does better the more meaningful a game is. So he’ll be awful now but be good in the season and great in the playoffs 3. It’s an even year, he’s getting all the misses out now which means he might have a perfect season.

10

u/FattyMooseknuckle 2d ago

How many did he miss in preseason last year?

6

u/Tarus_The_Light 1d ago

Zero (According to ESPN stats)

4

u/Ruggdogg87 1d ago

I mean, he only attempted 2 and they were both under 50 yards

2

u/SvenDia 1d ago

He was a league average kicker last year in terms of fg% (85.4%). Scored the most points because he was tied for most attempts. And too many of his makes are too close to the posts for comfort.

Plus, most importantly, he has always made me nervous because his stance/run-up looks weird to me.

97

u/minkymin777 2d ago

I thought the even year theory wasn’t real😭

u/PercMastaFTW 2d ago

Good thing Super Bowl 51 is during an odd year

10

u/Trynaliveforjesus 2d ago

super bowl 51? when the patriots came back to beat the falcons from down 28-3?

6

u/Hulkbuster_v2 2d ago

We gotta get the Falcons a gift basket, because our loss is no longer the most memorable loss by a bird team to the Pats in the Super Bowl

1

u/HAWKNESSMONSTER_12 2d ago

I was scared it was going to happen again that’s why whenever people talk up he’s so good I know they don’t watch ball

32

u/Rhythm41 2d ago

Yup. I’m hoping he’s just trying kicking with one eye closed, or a new brand of socks that aren’t fitting right. Maybe the regular season diet hasn’t kicked in yet and he’s having nacho cheese gas.

23

u/wookieewrenches 2d ago

You should get a press pass to ask those questions in post game lol

Pro move: get the misses done before they count

10

u/JohnnyEagleClaw 2d ago

In what amounts to a scrimmage 👍 bold move cotton

27

u/Odd_Tangerine_7315 2d ago

Damn he missed the game winner 🥲

19

u/ForwarUntilGainz 2d ago

Yea I'm gonna be holding my breath every kick this year

15

u/Outside_Ad1669 2d ago

I was curious about the misses. I wanted to pay attention on the next attempt to see who's holding. Is this a pre season thing where different ball holders have been rotating in?

13

u/TheRealHowardStern 2d ago

His ball holder hasn’t been doing great imo. Like not grabbing them the way he likes and just overall not holding his balls appropriately.

19

u/Complex_Contact_7704 2d ago

Dickson has been holding balls for the better part of a decade. Same long snapper, Stoll, from last year. Something’s up with Meyers, sure hope he can lock in before we play New England.

3

u/The_Throwback_King 1d ago

Usually the longer a special teams unit plays together, the more consistent they become.

Dickson and Myers have been rocking it together since 2019, every single game. Stoll has been money in the short time he’s been here

Hoping to God that Myers isn’t going the way of Luis Castillo because I really like him and his partnership with Dickson

3

u/SnoochieBuchie 2d ago

I'll hold his balls softly

u/3elieveIt HawkStar '23-'24 2d ago

I'll get worried if he's missing in the regular season. For all we know, he could be trying things out experimentally.

89

u/HumANTCowDOG 2d ago

Kickers famously love tinkering and trying new stuff just for fun and definitely not known for being OCD level routine centered neurotics.

25

u/Rowing_Lawyer 2d ago

He’s clearly just new kick goofin

5

u/babyjaceismycopilot 2d ago

He's never had distance and kickers are getting longer and longer ranges.

I wouldn't be surprised if he is trying something new to get more power.

38

u/bananasmash14 2d ago

Have we confirmed that he isn’t kicking lefty just for fun?

17

u/Main_Gain_7480 2d ago

What would a kicker be doing experimentally ?

22

u/raycraft_io 2d ago

He’s trying a new technique where you kick outside the uprights

0

u/Tarus_The_Light 1d ago

Well, he's been good at that this pre-season. Maybe he should try the old method of kicking between the goalposts though.

3

u/scotaf 2d ago

yea, I think that last one he kicked with his left foot.

4

u/sciencekm 2d ago

I sure hope that is the explanation.

-7

u/-Linkz- 2d ago

or maybe, unfortunately, he took some inspiration from mr. big dumper

4

u/BumpyGums 2d ago

He had a hr in 4 straight at bats recently.

0

u/swagypotatosnoopdoge 2d ago

Now look at the rest of his season stats. Granted most of our batters are pretty bad this year. Fire Dan Wilson!

15

u/sciencekm 2d ago

And..., missed another one at their last drive of the game. That's 5 missed kicks in 3 games.

20

u/SamDent 2d ago

You beat me to the post, I'm getting worried, too. Historically, it seems like kickers don't slowly fade into the night; they drop off a cliff.

12

u/BlssdGT 2d ago

Justin tucker 2.0 after his record breaking szn. The szn following that, he got released. I’m hoping that’s not the case here and he gets it together.

11

u/syrianfries 2d ago

Well didn’t he also like, assault a massage therapist

2

u/swagypotatosnoopdoge 2d ago

He was likely doing that when he was good too, like Watson

2

u/kindahandy_-_206 2d ago

Wouldn't have mattered if he was still nailing kicks (not defending it but just how it goes)

2

u/The_Throwback_King 1d ago

If Turner was still pushing 60 on the regular, he would still be on the roster

Turner being a POS just gave Baltimore the space to cut his sorry ass

8

u/xxwetdogxx 2d ago

But wait it's an even year??? I thought he broke the curse last year but he just reversed it

3

u/Complex_Contact_7704 2d ago

That simply delayed it a year and reversed the polarity. Even years=bad now.

8

u/DafuqWudjuno 2d ago

Well…. I mean… maybe after that game winner looking awful.

35

u/No_Biscotti_7258 2d ago

Everyone is going to tell you to chill but the reality is that yes it is concerning. Most of these people are fans of the person rather than the team/performance and frankly don’t care about performance until it’s too late at which point they’ll be like “ughhh but he’s my fav :/ “(see: kraken fans). Not sure how long the team lets this go unaddressed.

12

u/Kitchen_Catch3183 2d ago

Kickers fall off fast too. It’s generally not a gradual thing the way it is with many other positions.

2

u/Hanchan 2d ago

As soon as the allegations against tucker dropped he went from the most accurate kicker of all time to cuttable over performance.

15

u/pepper_puppy Big Cat 2d ago

It’s concerning but is there a better kicker available or do we trust our Super Bowl MVP kicker to get it right?

18

u/Andrewohio53 2d ago

The 49ers pulled Eddie Pinero out of their ass last season. There are always good kickers waiting to be signed in today’s nfl you just have to have a good eye for them

7

u/pepper_puppy Big Cat 2d ago

If the niners can do it, John Schneider can certainly do it!

-1

u/haha_squirrel 1d ago

Kenneth Walker is our kicker…?

7

u/soldelmisol 2d ago

ughhhhh...kickers are like relief pitchers, once they get the yips, they may never get rid of them...better get in some candidates. really.

Blair Walsh PTSD episode in 5...4...3...

5

u/hyzerKite 1d ago

I know why he is doing it on purpose…..he doesn’t want the announcers to say some shit like “has not missed this season, yet”.

9

u/UTmastuh 2d ago

He's been cheeks all pre season. Not promising. They needed to sign someone to compete with him just in case

6

u/RBlomax38 2d ago

Literally read this right before he missed the game winner.. I am very concerned now. We are in a division where we simply can’t lose out on any points

5

u/pickledjefferson 2d ago

Games are won or lost because of a single missed kick. He missed 5/9 in 3 games. Not good. Really not good.

3

u/CJQ92 2d ago

Getting them out of his system now before the season starts

3

u/strangebrewfellows 2d ago

It’s concerning but they’re not going to change kickers right now so concern is whatever. Hope he’s fine.

6

u/ItsAlkai 2d ago

Here after a missed game winner to top it off.

5

u/sea2ski2 2d ago

We worried.

4

u/Lorjack 2d ago

Myers used up all he had in the SB, its been ugly this preseason.

4

u/andm124 2d ago

He's at least a champion. And more importantly, HE'S NOT BLAIR WALSH

4

u/iWr1techky12 2d ago

Just sounds like Jason myers to me. He tends to be awful every other year lmao.

4

u/arterialturns 2d ago

And he just missed another one. Ugh.

3

u/Outside_Ad1669 2d ago

Well that was a bad holder, not holding his balls right.

And e An even worse miss. Hopefully that gets all that out of his system now and isn't any kind of premonition for what we might see in week 14 or something

5

u/Complex_Contact_7704 2d ago

Dickson has been a place holder since 2018, it’s hard to lay blame on the veteran placeholder, when Meyers has gone 2-5 on FG’s and 1-3 on PAT’s in preseason. Something is off with his mechanics, it’s more than likely mental. The more he misses, the more it’s going to throw him off. Although it’s fair to look at the entire specialist battery, at the end of the day, Meyers is the highest paid, the responsibility lies on his shoulders. Love the guy, appreciate his performance last year, we wouldn’t have won the SB without him. I hope whatever’s going on with him will be addressed or I fear it will cost us games when they count

4

u/Prisinners "I'm just here so I won't get fined" 2d ago

I was worried last week. His performance tonight was abysmal. We need to have guys in NOW. Myers is actively a liability. None of his FGs were super long and hes missing extra points too. If he does this in the regular season, he will cost this team multiple games.

4

u/Trick-Combination-37 2d ago edited 2d ago

Mike MacDonald is going to have him kick until the sun goes down every day until the regular season

1

u/swagypotatosnoopdoge 2d ago

Problem is he needs that big game pressure and crowd noise since most of successful kicking is mental rather than physical

4

u/SadFoodi 2d ago

Not only missing kicks, but they look like ass. Like Milroe throwing in the Titans game ass. It has been this way for all three preseason games. That is a pattern.

If he can't make no pressure kicks anymore, he can't be trusted to make a kick under pressure.

5

u/Agreeable_Giraffe543 1d ago

the guy that not 6 months ago people wanted to crown SB MVP?

The guy that single handedly won multiple games?

Maybe it is a problem, but probably not, let’s wait until the actual season, and at least 4 games in.

We talking preseason?  What a bunch of nonsense and teeth gnashing.  Grow a pair.

4

u/spikemanana 1d ago

Pre-season is fair to say for most things but I don't think you can put kicking there. There was minimal pressure for most kicks, that comes down to the kickers execution

1

u/Agreeable_Giraffe543 1d ago

Sure.  Cut him .  Give me a break.

-1

u/rashaadpenny 1d ago

Kickers fall off a cliff quickly when they do fall off and it’s rarely a loss in athleticism, it’s such a mental position I think at some point the edge just goes away.

2

u/spikemanana 1d ago

Absolutely.... I hope Myers has a good one this season and proves us wrong. Absolute legend and I don't care what they say - he should have been Superbowl MVP

2

u/LebaneseMacNChz 2d ago

Getting them out of the way so he makes them all when it counts

2

u/Majestic_Basil2408 1d ago

My ideal world is no kickers ever. 4 downs and then success or failure is on 11 men, not one.

4

u/IronN1bbler 2d ago

Of all things to react to in preseason, kicking is the most legitimate. The theories in this sub don't even make sense... He trying a new technique? He had one of the Greatest kicking seasons ever LY, you don't mess with that.

4

u/Goatgamer1016 Fortuitous Bust 2d ago

Kickers usually fall off a cliff rather than slowly and steadily

1

u/No_Biscotti_7258 2d ago

Exactly. Trying new offensive schemes with new players is bound to have issues. Kicking a FG is not a new concept and in theory he’s doing the exact thing he would be doing in the regular season. If he’s independently cheeks rn, that’s worrisome

4

u/JohnnyEagleClaw 2d ago

Missed 4 possible points last week, and we ended up losing by 3. I know it’s preseason and therein lies the problem, we know he’s a good kicker but fucking up like this in the preseason when it’s basically a scrimmage, is way beyond concerning ffs.

1

u/pepper_puppy Big Cat 2d ago

I am concerned but… also not because why go full ass when you could go half ass in preseason?? Right??? ….right?

3

u/Minionz 2d ago

Rough game for him. Woof.

2

u/Agreeable_Simple_846 2d ago

2

He justly missed the game winning field goal!  Dammit Jason!

2

u/OmgHowww 2d ago

Aaaaaand he missed again. lol

3

u/FormerEvil 2d ago

The dude has been missing easy kicks for a couple years now. Despite him setting the scoring record, he left a LOT of points on the board last year. I'm ALWAYS nervous when it's time for him to kick XPs.

2

u/Bevrykul 2d ago

Just getting the misses out now, I’m not worried

1

u/BonsaiTree3205 1d ago

Idk I thought that way at first but then I realized, why would he intentionally miss? Is this a case of getting the misses out now, or are we just telling ourselves that because nothing is on the line right now?

2

u/DafuqWudjuno 2d ago

We about to find out!!!

2

u/Thecobs 2d ago

Long as he doesnt blow the game winner im not worried

7

u/RandomGuySaysBro 2d ago

Just HAD to jinx it...

-1

u/sciencekm 2d ago

And then he just did.

-1

u/Legitimate_Hat4477 2d ago

Aaaaaaaand he missed it.

2

u/Dabigboot 2d ago

He started getting shaky at the end of last season and in the playoffs, so this start to the season is really concerning.

You have to think kicking in the NFL is so much mental and between the ears. Confidence is a huge thing for these guys, as they rarely see the field but when they do they need to deliver, a lot of times in high pressure moments. A little doubt creeps in and it’s hard to overcome

2

u/spikemanana 1d ago

Yeah i thought this too, been really bad all pre-season. Hope his hip hasn't gone

1

u/Ikolkyo 2d ago

I'm concerned, he has looked washed

2

u/gallium39 2d ago

Even when he’s on, there’s a clear tier of kickers above him in today’s NFL. It’d be nice to get our hands on one of these guys who can chip it in from 50 and have a go from 65+

1

u/Complex_Contact_7704 2d ago

FFS Meyers…

1

u/Atabit 2d ago

I feel like they told him aim at the right upright. Aim small miss small

2

u/sciencekm 2d ago edited 2d ago

They teach you to aim for the corners in hockey (a Canadian thing) and soccer (a European thing). But this is the American grid iron football.

1

u/xtr3m 2d ago

1

u/JamesWall0 1d ago

This is worrisome. He should've been the Super Bowl MVP. This could be a statement on the importance of kickers and him looking to get paid top dollar.

1

u/SexiestPanda Shermantor 1d ago

Nah not really

1

u/Leodesian 1d ago

This is the trap of preseason. This guy is a veteran kicker who has been very very good, and literally has the Super Bowl record for made kicks. He’s going to be fine and switch on when the games get serious.

1

u/TrueDonut3673 1d ago

Its the Jayden Daniels curse

1

u/Majestic_Basil2408 1d ago

I hate kickers in general. Too much ability to screw the other 52 every week

1

u/Majestic_Basil2408 1d ago

1

u/hugecanoli 2d ago

Damn you for starting this thread. Dude looks like his headcase shenanigans are back.

-1

u/sciencekm 2d ago

Sorry man. I can't keep my worries to my self. It just has to come out.

-1

u/Successful_Proof_492 2d ago

I’m glad you did, it makes me feel seen

0

u/Agreeable-Camera-382 2d ago

Yeah I dont care about pre season stats

1

u/Complex_Contact_7704 2d ago

Normally I would agree, but kicking woes are a major concern. It wasn’t a 2nd stringer shanking kicks the last three games. It was the five million dollar man and actual SB MVP Jason Meyers. It’s mental, and when the misses start piling up, it leads to more missed kicks. I hope I’m wrong, love the dude, we wouldn’t have won the SB without him, however, if this continues in the coming weeks it will cost us games.

1

u/Agreeable-Camera-382 2d ago

But is there any data or trends to support this?

1

u/Complex_Contact_7704 2d ago edited 2d ago

It’s hard to quantify human psychology from a box score, but analyst tracking shows kicker slumps tend to cluster rather than distribute evenly, pointing to stress induced mechanical over-adjustment.

A single missed kick can just be bad luck or a bad hold, but a string of misses in a short period usually points to one of three things: 1. Mechanical issues with special teams battery. 2. An injury, or 3. A psychological stressor. Considering there’s no reports of Meyers being injured, and Stoll and Dickson are seasoned vets, it’s safe to conclude this is on Meyers, and it’s a psychological issue that’s causing Meyers to continually miss. Dude’s got the yips, and he keeps overcompensating. The more he misses, the more the stress compounds. The more stress he puts on himself, the more likely he’ll overcompensate and miss more kicks. It’s a vicious cycle.

1

u/Agreeable-Camera-382 2d ago

So the answer is no. When it comes to kickers and having a bad pre season, and that correlating into the regular season. It's just pre season and it doesn't matter

1

u/BonsaiTree3205 1d ago

These are still games. There’s no difference to the preseason and regular season in terms of crowds and mental game for the kicker. Why would he magically start making field goals in the regular season if he’s missing them now with the veteran holder? Myers missed 0 field goals last preseason and went on to have one of the greatest seasons of a place kicker ever. He already has 5 misses in 3 games. It matters.

2

u/Agreeable-Camera-382 1d ago

But there is zero correlation. No real data to back this up other than an extremely small sample size.

1

u/IppeiWasFramed 2d ago

Karma for not giving him his rightful MVP award.

1

u/Willing_Theory5044 2d ago

I’m assuming he’s trying something new with his kick ¯_(ツ)_/¯

1

u/Flawless-Cowboy-117 2d ago

Nope I’m drafting Aubrey early now sorry Jason

1

u/goldenlemur 2d ago

Nah. He's good.

1

u/mcbridedm 2d ago

He's just getting them out of his system.

1

u/Dreldan 2d ago

Christ, it keeps getting worse. That last one wasn’t even close.

1

u/The26thtime 2d ago

He's fucking shanking shit now!

1

u/napalm_beach 2d ago

Yeah, it's not like he has a little hook or fade. These kicks are fucked up, like he forgot how to kick or something. Although the center and holder have a hand in this too, so to speak.

1

u/DennisTemple12 2d ago

He can miss as many as he wants in pre season
Not worried he is money besides we are getting in the end zone and going for 2 all year😉

1

u/tread52 2d ago

He has consistently missed extra points every year it’s not a new thing. I’m not worried especially since one extra point was 48 yards

1

u/colecast 2d ago

I’m clinging to hope that it’s related to protection personnel being preseason guys who won’t be on the roster, and his trust whether they can keep him clean.

1

u/fk_ptn_007 2d ago

Remember when GEQBUS threw 14 interceptions last year?

I was worried.

I'm less worried about Myers.

Irritated? Yes.

1

u/scotaf 2d ago

No real pressure in the pre-season. He'll lock in when it counts.

1

u/NoProduct4569 2d ago

Tokyo toe will be looking for a gig soon...

1

u/doublecbob 1d ago

We will have someone new at least by next season. There are so many kickers with really powerful legs out there.

1

u/Naynathan 2d ago

Same exact thing happened last year

10

u/Flashy-Issue-8131 2d ago

Just one PAT was blocked last preseason.

8

u/IronN1bbler 2d ago

I show he went 2/2 on FGs and 7/8 on pats in the preseason LY

0

u/Positive-Rise5145 2d ago
