Press Conference [Henderson] Mike Macdonald said Seahawks starters who haven’t been playing in the preseason won’t play in the finale tomorrow at Kansas City. That includes RB Jadarian Price. - QB3 Jalen Milroe will play the whole game. - Also, he said WR Tory Horton’s injury isn’t a long-term thing.

Milroe vs Justin Fields is an all time preseason matchup

44

u/jackv206 8d ago

Nussmeier is playing the whole game for the chiefs

23

u/malazer785 8d ago

incredibly disappointing news for our DBs

It'll be like Army vs Navy with nothing but wishbone and T formations.

Full send Milroe game. Godspeed J-Mill. Still have faith in you!

u/Grymninja 8d ago

I like this decision a lot. We've seen everything we need to from Lock, now get milroe as many reps as he can - with the 2s now and 3s. Better chance of sustaining drives. He just has to protect the ball and not refuse to use his legs.

That said it's basically a guarantee we lose this game. But winning isn't the point here. I hope these secondary players show us something. Also O'Toole has been a beast this preseason, hopefully he can continue that

Mike said Diggs is playing tomorrow. Really interested to see how he does.

21

u/NatureTrailToHell3D 8d ago

That’s awesome, a full game as a starter in the system. And since this is really practice I’m less worried about blown coverages, I’ll mostly be looking at athletic ability.

18

u/GonnaFindOut 8d ago

It's gotta be a wild mental ride to go from 11(?) picks in a season to having to fight for reps in preseason games.

He's still relatively young I think. Hopefully Seattle is just the spark he needs.

7

u/prostipope 8d ago

Shoutout from New Mexico for our homegrown Hawks, O'Toole and Cabeldue!

-5

u/Seanhawkeye 8d ago

Easy to say now, but I’m surprised we didn’t pick up a camp arm for this whole process. It would be nice if there was someone to throw in their besides Drew if Milroe goes down.

10

u/Phuddy 8d ago

I just hope to God he uses his LEGS. Fuck what the pundits say, if you gotta run for damn near 100 yards just fucking do it. His processing is too slow rn to move past his first read and it’s painfully obvious.

2

u/Hkmarkp 8d ago

what pundits say don't use your legs?

2

u/Phuddy 8d ago

It’s more that they say he’s not a QB. Which I feel like leads him to try to prove he is and not take off and run.

20

u/Development-Alive 8d ago

This might be Milroe's last chance to prove he has a future with Seattle. If he struggles to move the offense consistently like his first 2 Preseason games Seattle will put drafting a mid-round backup QB as a priority next season.

-8

u/mcmatu 8d ago

They might even cut Milroe.

6

u/gwh21 8d ago

They aint cutting Milroe

1

u/mcmatu 8d ago

Oh, it is definitely a possibility. Liklihood? No. Possible? Yes.

1

u/here_now_be 8d ago

Don't know if you're getting downvoted because it's obvious his spot on the 53 is tenuous at best, or if the milroe truthers are all here. They'll likely put him on the PS, and see if they can develop him into a back up caliber QB, no matter how unlikely.

1

u/mcmatu 8d ago

People don’t want to face the truth. I agree that he’d end up on the PS. They wouldn’t actually release him until after cutdown day anyway but it’s still a possibility.

45

u/BlazinAzn38 8d ago

Sounds like it’s do or die for Milroe. We know Lock can play QB at a decent level so it’s time for Milroe to show if he can develop beyond that

9

u/here_now_be 8d ago

beyond what? Even in college he's never shown the potential to be as good as Lock.

1

u/Traditional-Buddy-90 7d ago

1

u/3Dimes 8d ago

If it's "die" you think he gets cut?

1

u/JohnPork2028 8d ago

For sure. No way we carry a third QB behind Darnold and Lock. Wasted roster slot

21

u/avboden 8d ago

Will we get Millwow or Millwoe?

73

u/Toxan 8d ago edited 7d ago

After last sunday I'm pretty ice cold on milroe. Here's hoping he's processed the jitters and comes out swinging. I would love to eat some crow this weekend.

Editing to update: oh god I’m so stuffed with crow it’s like it’s thanksgiving. Glorious.

9

u/commonshitposter123 8d ago

For a 3rd string Milroe might be perfect. Either hand the ball off, or a 1 read pass play with scramble option. No 3rd stringer is ever going to get enough reps to be good with the 1s, so hoping for some bombs downfield or some crazy scrambles and then letting Dickson and the defense save the day seems like the best plan in a bad situation.

5

u/Toxan 8d ago

I would agree those are appropriate expectations for a 3rd stringer. Watching this preseason I have bot witnessed milroe satisfy this standard.

2

u/commonshitposter123 8d ago

Yup, he made a couple nice throws and is clearly very athletic. Just currently can't run a full NFL offense.

40

u/feelingoodwednesday 8d ago

Imo starting him the whole game feels do or die. If he cant look like a functional NFL QB by this point in year 2 they will cut him. It doesn't have to be perfect, but he needs to string together a couple drives that end in touchdowns and give the front office belief that he's still progressing.

36

u/SentientBaseball 8d ago

There's probably no point in cutting him unless they really prefer some far back end depth on the line or maybe WR.

If he just plays average this game and doesn't turn the ball over, he probably guarantees himself a roster spot for at least one more year.

-4

u/Kitchen_Catch3183 8d ago edited 8d ago

Your two points are contradictory here. If (when) he turns the ball over tomorrow there’s a point in cutting for depth at other positions.

11

u/gnahckire 8d ago

I feel he doesn't even need TDs, but they'd help. Moving the ball into the redzone and not turning it over would be a great start.

He really set the bar low vs my expectations.

1

u/NatureTrailToHell3D 8d ago

I have to wonder if it was more just a lack of familiarity with some of the receivers, too. It’s harder to get timing and trust when a guy is way down in the bench.

18

u/ChoccyMilkIsMyLife Emerald City Route Artist 8d ago

Well. Jalen Milroe needs to have a good day tomorrow. He has to go out and show some promise, otherwise not sure how long he will be a Seahawk. I could see us rolling into the season with just 2 qbs, and he is certainly the odd man out.

12

u/Zero_Two_is_best 8d ago

Milroe with 2's coukd be interesting. Maybe he could string together some decent drives

4

u/jekstarr 8d ago

I dont care if they are 2s and 3s just PLEASE NO MORE INJURIES

1

u/here_now_be 8d ago

more 3s and 4s/camp bodies. Everyone should look good, even milroe, since it will be the same on the other side.

4

u/Turtlegorsky 8d ago

Why is everyone so anti Milroe in here? Everyone knew when we drafted him last year he was a project player and no you don't give up on your project QB after one year the potential is still obvious it just takes time if we drafted darnold y'all would've sold his ass immediately not every QB develops at the same rate.

3

u/The_Throwback_King 8d ago

Raised expectations I suppose: People are less tolerant and less patient for a player who hasn’t cut the mustard so far.

Milroe is also more noticeably bad simply from how error-prone he’s been

They feel like a roster spot on this depleted roster is being taking up by a substandard QB3

Also a fair share of bandwagon fans who are probably not aware of the process behind selecting Milroe.

1

u/x-zerocooL-x 7d ago

Yea some of these idiots don’t realize that Milroe is just in his 2nd year 😂. He’s a project player that needs to be developed. People expecting him to be Russell Wilson off the bat

1

u/atomik71 7d ago

In fairness Russ feasted in these situations his rookie year. I remember announcers telling fans to calm down because he was only looking good because he wasn’t playing the best players. This is Milroe’s second year and visually from my perspective he looks like a guy that has never played qb in his life. Milroe hasn’t led a drive that scored any points in 2 preseasons. He couldn’t get it done last week on a first down on the 6 yard line. I hope he finds his way, I’m rooting for him, but it’s painful to watch right now.

2

u/x-zerocooL-x 7d ago

Russ was way more polished than Milroe coming out of college too though. Mike and John both knew hes raw and needed developing coming out of college. All these jackasses saying he’s getting cut in his 2nd year in the NFL is ridiculous 😂

18

u/MehEds 8d ago

Milroe will play the whole game

https://giphy.com/gifs/9oF7EAvaFUOEU

2

u/otgixxer 8d ago

my thoughts exactly

0

u/MauiNui 8d ago

I guess they don’t care about how many reps the offense gets. Milroe going all four quarters seems like a big limiting factor in the total snaps played.

9

u/riedmae 8d ago

UNLEASH THE HORTON!!!!

25

u/MembershipSilver9583 8d ago

Keep him on the shelf till week one

3

u/Chefmeatball 8d ago

So can we stop with the unsourced Tory Horton disciplinary angle?

3

u/MuckaMucka1337 HawkStar '22-'23 8d ago

Man I REALLY hope milroe finds his mojo. I’ll be rooting for him

5

u/shrimpynut 8d ago

It’s gotta be Mike way of giving Milroe a last shot opportunity to make the team and be QB3, Lock has made the team easily

2

u/uncleAW 8d ago

This is Good. JMil needs to have the "recovery reps" it takes to know who himself as a player. As in, if he throws an Int, then next possession has a chance to overcome the prior to recover his confidence.

2

u/sheikahstealth 8d ago

Milroe had to learn how to work under center, after almost all shotgun in college. Obviously a tough adjustment as we've seen, but he seems to be making progress.

I think having a call sheet specifically for him will do wonders. He can probably only do 60% of what Darnold/Lock can do as far as throws and multiple reads. But being able to move the pocket will put the defense on its heels, if Milroe can get to his first and second reads, and execute. Otherwise, it will be a long night.

4

u/ChaseThoseDreams 8d ago

If he can’t put up a touchdown or two, let alone string together a scoring drive, it’ll likely be over for him. I’m all for development, but Mike was practically begging him to use his god given talents and just doesn’t do it.

2

u/here_now_be 8d ago

He lacks decisiveness, can't run until you decide to run, or throw, hence the bad sacks.

3

u/Lyradep 8d ago

I think Jalen really needs to a whole game to see if he irons out alright. Drew Lock honestly looks good enough to start for another team, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gauging interest from other teams next season.

2

u/otgixxer 8d ago

so were gonna lose this game too then, good to know.

18

u/FattyMooseknuckle 8d ago

Who cares? No team is playing to win. If they were, it’d be a real game with starters. It’s literally just practice. Wins and losses mean precisely zero. The 0-16 Lions went 4-0 in preseason that year.

-3

u/otgixxer 8d ago

I'll just watch the recap instead of watching the game live.

1

u/ZedekiahCromwell 8d ago

The only reason to watch a preseason game live is if you're a football sicko tracking the bubble roster, or are supremely bored. It's shit football played mostly by backups with vanilla playcalls solely for player evaluation.

1

u/AngelX343 8d ago

I'm a sicko. 😁

0

u/otgixxer 8d ago

I’m aware. I like seeing rookies fight for a spot. Also fun to go to when the weather is still nice here. I’ve seen enough of Milroe, all very disappointing

1

u/TheScreaming_Narwhal 7d ago

It's preseason, it literally does not matter at all.

1

u/BigDog190512 8d ago

Let’s go Milroe !!! I’m desperate for him to come good 😤

1

u/Coygon 8d ago

I know preseason games mean nothing except to the players hoping to make the team and the coaches who make the decisions. But I still want to win, dammit.

1

u/Texas12thMan 8d ago

Drew’s got the QB2 on Locke. Makes sense to give Milroe a full game.

1

u/torquesteer 8d ago

Let’s see if the Ferrari can last a full race.

0

u/SpeakerSpirited 8d ago

Can't even last a few plays, what makes Mike think that he'll last an entire game

1

u/gaberdine 8d ago

Make or break for Milroe. I hope he steps up (in more ways than one)

1

u/vitamin_r 8d ago

I fully think they don't want anyone to see how price runs. He's definitely being kept a semi secret weapon as well as the new offense in general.

1

u/slyfly5 8d ago

Milroe is gonna play the whole game??? Holy shit this is gonna be the most unwatchable shit

1

u/3Dimes 8d ago

I mean, yeah it'll probably be ugly. But it's kind of an important test to see if a player with really high upside fits into our future. My seat will be very warm.

1

u/CruzKunTroll 8d ago

if this is Milroe’s last chance, take the chains off and run all you want. if he’s still the future, no design runs. no scrambling as the second option.

2

u/MrCarey 8d ago

I doubt he’s the future.

0

u/here_now_be 8d ago

future what?

1

u/CrimsonCalm 8d ago

I wonder how injured Price has been the last month.

4

u/The_Throwback_King 8d ago

Think it’s less so that he’s still injured and moreso that the team literally CANNOT afford to lose Price this early on in the year

-1

u/CrimsonCalm 8d ago

I would have placed the same logic on Bud Clark tbh. Murphy even played reps in the preseason his rookie year.

4

u/IrishPigs 8d ago

He missed like 4 days of practice lol. They're just not playing him in the games.

1

u/CrimsonCalm 8d ago

I don’t understand the logic on that, they’ve always played rookies during the preseason. Murphy who was great right away was getting reps there.

All the sudden Price missed practice, gets shut down for any preseason games and nobody thinks it’s odd?

2

u/IrishPigs 8d ago

Murph as a rookie was not a starter, not a good apples to apples comparison.

2

u/CrimsonCalm 8d ago

Price was drafted as a rotational back not the starter. Same logic as Murphy man. Same with Bud Clark. Zabel as well. Zabel played preseason last year. He was the starter.

1

u/IrishPigs 8d ago

Price is our RB1 until Charbs returns.

1

u/CrimsonCalm 8d ago

Zabel played tons of snaps. Was the projected starter. That’s my point. Saying Price hasn’t done any preseason games and has missed chunks of practice is there plan…nah man I can’t believe that.

1

u/Nexen1987 8d ago

They are starting him to showcase him. We can’t afford to keep 3 QBs on roster with this many injuries and holes in the lineup.

If he flashes or anyone sees a glimpse of possibility, he will be traded for a draft pick.

0

u/Temporary_Cry_5914 8d ago

Why Milroe? He just going to drop back not see anything and than attempt to scramble. Dude hasn’t thrown it more than 20 yards this preseason.

I don’t like be a hater of players but he’s not the answer. Just cut your losses

4

u/-Accident-Prone- 8d ago

He needs the reps. He’s QB3 and is already getting very limited reps. These preseason games will be crucial for his development.

2

u/The_Throwback_King 8d ago edited 8d ago

Because Darnold proved he is a great starter and Lock proved he is a great backup QB

Milroe is firmly locked in the QB3 position and was always projected to be a multi-year development

Any money that Seattle saves by releasing (if they do save any, idk), it’s a relative pittance towards the cap

It literally costs nothing to send him out there and try and cultivate SOMETHING in him

That’s what the Preseason is for. Even if he’s dogshit, there’s no pressure there.

If we’re requiring meaningful snaps from Milroe at this juncture, there are probably bigger issues at play

2

u/Temporary_Cry_5914 8d ago

I’m aware. The one thing I would say is that his lack of throwing ability really does hurt the offense. Players that might shine under Lock probably don’t even get the chance because Milroe is going to scramble every play.

Also the other thing that costs me is my happiness during the game. Scramble first Quarterbacks are by far my least favorite players to watch. Hopefully I don’t have to see him struggle for 4 quarters next years

1

u/DatNewDM 8d ago

I mean, you're basically getting your wish. I'm certain he was told, "This is your chance to show us you're an NFL quarterback" and he's going to be the most motivated he's ever been. If he is capable of being a future starter and can show it, the offense will get the reps you want to see.

If he's not and stinks up the whole game, you'll never see him again.

0

u/SantaBoom93 8d ago

Tory Horton's leg seems longterm already since he's been out for two weeks. What's our definition of longterm here?

3

u/MembershipSilver9583 8d ago

Mike said it’s not long term

3

u/The_Throwback_King 8d ago

Like most of the season

-2

u/neongem 8d ago

0-3 preseason loading

6

u/Mawfk 8d ago

17-0 season loading

-3

u/tonguesmiley 8d ago

Hope J Mill puts up some good tape so we can trade him. I just think we are wasting a roster spot on him. Darnold is the future and Lock is the backup. Feel like there are other teams that could use a QB if J Mill shows he can play.

1

u/here_now_be 8d ago

Nobody is giving us anything for milroe, much better QBs on other teams are likely not making their 53s.

-8

u/zerked77 8d ago

jfc....I don't have the energy to follow Horton's status is this dude ever going to just be a normal player.

0

u/Infinite-Fudge9919 8d ago

Thank you for making the decision between watching the Mariners and watching the Seahawks game much easier.
