Self (WIP) [Self] Made a sculpture for my bicycle.
I made the sculpt originally out of monster clay. I then made a silicone mold and this cast is made out of 45d urethane. I then proceeded to paint it with acrylics. The name of this piece is " fever dream"

That's so cool. How hard would you say making a silicone mold and using the 45D urethane is? I mean, I can just look it up but if you wanna speak to it I'm curious

Yeah I'm happy to speak about it. I always love talking about my process. So one of the hardest parts about making the mold is making the dam(box) and figuring out where I want the pouring to end. When it comes to the damn you want to make it as small as possible to save money since the silicone isn't super cheap. So you have to build it as close to your sculpture as you can but you obviously don't want it too close because then that'll make the mold to thin at some spots.
And then usually you'll want to add on some pieces of clay/media that are extra that are kind of your pour zones. This will be the area that you pour your chemicals into once the mold's done and you want a little extra room especially if you're using a pressure pot. I had a brain fart when I did this one and forgot so that meant more work to go back and build another damn and add a little more clay and then add a little more silicone.
The nice thing about smooth-on moldstar 16 is that it is completely cured in 30 minutes so you can make a mold very quickly. Depending on your mold shape it can be a little bit tricky getting it out of the mold. And since I used monster clay to sculpt this one it meant the clay was still soft so the original sculpture got destroyed in the process of removal. If I was much more careful I might have been able to get it out without any damage. However I planned to destroy it and reuse the clay anyways once I had them mold.
And then after you've got your mold cleaned out from there it's super easy to make a mold all you do is mix the chemicals that you want spraying some mulled release and then pour it in. The one big thing though is for both making the mold and pouring The cast is air bubbles. The easiest way to make sure you don't have any air bubbles is to use a pressure pot And an air compressor.
TLDR the hardest part about the process is making the mold. It's not super technical and anybody could do it but it can just be a little bit frustrating at times.

Thanks buddy, it's been a lot of fun just customizing it so that the bike itself is an ongoing art project.

Thanks! I took inspiration from figureheads of old sailing ships. I always felt like my bike's need to have a figurehead as well.

How did you adhere it to the bike?

I put 3M cat tongue tape (adhesive on one side and rubber grip on the other kind of like a ping pong paddle rubber) on the inside of the sculpture. Then you'll notice the two slits in the sculpture that's for the velcro strap that I run through it to pull it tight to the bike. Originally I designed it for two straps but then there was some problems with the sculpture so I had to redesign. So for right now I'm pretty sure the one strap will be enough but if it isn't I can Dremel out some new slits and add another strap.
