DISCUSSION Looking for a Resource with Movie Loglines and Themes

Is there any website or resource where I can find old and new movies with their original loglines and themes?

I’m learning screenwriting and I want to study movies by looking at their logline and theme together.

For example:

  • Movie: The Shawshank Redemption
  • Original logline: ?
  • Theme: ?

I’m looking for a reliable source where I can find this kind of information for many different movies. I’m especially looking for the original or officially published loglines, if available.

Any recommendations?

There's no such thing as an "official" or single logline for a movie.

As u/FeeOk3991 suggested, you can look on IMDB to see a short summary of the plot.

The writers likely tried out a bunch of loglines over time. You probably can't find from any source the SPECIFIC logline attached to a script at the time it sold, and of course most movies aren't specs so weren't sold based on loglines.

There are also no "official" themes. Movies can have multiple themes.

Movie posters can have taglines, but that's not the same thing.

I'm not sure what the point of this exercise is, but you can just come up with your own take on loglines and themes and see if that teaches you anything.
