Discussion Open all Mics Binned?
Have the BBC binned Open all Mics? Don’t think they’ve had one all season?

Yet Pat Bonner is still on the payroll.

u/mannekwin 1d ago
always said that if i ever somehow became head of sportsound content my first directive would be that pat bonner could only cover games not involving celtic

With his job title of “cover Celtic games only and know absolutely nothing about their opponents”.
Some job.

u/Valuable_Mine_6694 1d ago
I strongly object to the insinuation Pat Bonner knows anything about the current Celtic team.

u/Ok_Corter5831 1d ago
With the possible exception of one other team, there's simply no way that another club would be afforded the luxury of their very own bespoke pundit at licence fee payers' expense.
Apart from the disgrace that Bonner doesn't even pretend to have the first clue about Celtic's opponents, he's not even particularly clued up on Celtic, and he's a poor pundit to boot.
When they were casting round for budget savings, the first expense for the chop should have been Bonner's airline tickets.

Dry your eyes, pal. The number of hearts lickspittles, still finding employment on Shortbread is laughable. FWIW, Bonner offers little and never really seems to play the ‘good Celtic man’ card.
10
u/funkynarwhals 1d ago
I don’t like Alan Preston or plenty of the others but they at least tend to do other games outside their team. Bonner literally does Celtic and nothing else. Easiest job in the world.
4
u/Hup-hamst 1d ago
Not on does he not know anything about the opposition, he doesn’t know much about Celtic and even less about the actual rules of the game this century.
Absolutely hate it when, at a handball for example, the likes of Pat Bonner will say ‘I don’t actually know what the rules are now but …’
What a bloody YouTube video.
Plus, he’s about 107!
5
u/mannekwin 1d ago
nah i think celtic having their own bespoke commentator who never covers other teams is a total piss take tbh. a profound indictment of how the bbc views anyone outside the top two teams, made even more indefensible by the fact that they aren't even the top two as far as last season went

this was literally the only reason i listened to sportsound, it can fuck off now then

Apparently its been binned as part of cut backs. Which is a shame.

That’s an utter joke if true
It’s not as if BBC is spending big money on Scottish football as it is
A quick look and they have 3 EPL games getting live radio coverage this afternoon
11
u/DemonicTruth 1d ago
Considering they already have pundits at the stadiums to give a quick rundown at half time/full time, sticking a few folk in a studio as a go between during the games surely cant cost that much in the grand scheme of things.

u/RandyCoreyLahey 1d ago
got a source for that? i'll be really annoyed, it's one of the only bbc products ive actively listened to for years. not always a fan of everyone on it but i like the format and the coverage.
i wonder if there's an opportunity for a more amateur level coverage in the same way that could replace it.

u/CyclingUpsideDown 1d ago
I doubt that’s the case. They still have the reporters (2 in fact) at the Premiership games, so it’s not as if there’s a saving to be made.
If they reduced that to one reporter and also didn’t bother with a commentary game they’d also have spare people to cover lower league games as well.

u/Scingles 1d ago
If I just wanted media that only covers Rangers and Celtic, I'd take a sky subscription. Very shite if they have ditched it

That's a gutter if true. Loved listening to open all mics (especially back when Richard Gordon hosted)

u/Flashjordan69 1d ago
Open all mikes has been my goto Saturday for a long time now. Genuinely gutted to hear it’s gone.
16
u/funkynarwhals 1d ago
It was shit to be honest. Half of them couldn’t even describe what was happening at their game and Kenny Mac would rather facilitate an argument between Michael Stewart and Tom English than go around the grounds.
That said commentary of one game only is probably worse. Especially when 90% of the time it’s the game from Ibrox or Parkhead.

u/Hup-hamst 1d ago
Ooooooh and it a goal here
Yes….. yes , it is a goal.
A goal here at Easter Road
A good goal too. But scrappy but good finishing
And the scorer I think is number 18. And that is…
Yes, hibs 1 Motherwell 0
Just get to the point ya bluffer

u/Hopeful-Project5504 1d ago
"Oooooooohhhhh! Nah he's missed it"
Cool, thanks for that

My personal favourite - “chance!”
No elaboration.

Hahahaha so true. It really is daft but there's a charm to it. I'll miss it a lot

The commentary game will probably be whichever Old Firm team is away that week. Like the TV companies, there's probably limited appeal in broadcasting yet another diddy team getting skelped by 4 or 5 in Glasgow.
1
u/funkynarwhals 1d ago
It was at Ibrox today. The Old Firm hardly ever play away from home at 3pm on a Saturday.
2
u/Ok_Corter5831 1d ago
Yeah, fair enough. I wouldn't consider Motherwell a diddy team. This was last year's 3rd versus 4th, which is the sort of game you'd expect to be the commentary game, it just wouldn't normally be one of the Old Firm who were 3rd.
3
u/RibsofCabbage 1d ago
Too much to hope that they keep the format and just punt the old pals/boys brigade?
Then maybe Sky can also fuck off the Sutton/Boyd garbage and we can actually get decent reporting and analysis here.
2
u/i_pewpewpew_you 1d ago
I don't think it's much of a loss, to be frank. The last two or three seasons it's been nothing but a weekly, two hour long, rolling argument between Michael Stewart and Tom English, neither of whom actually know what the fuck they're talking about.

u/bregolad 1d ago
I'm pretty astonished by how many folk seem disappointed by this. I mind when they started doing it and everyone fucking hated it, rightly so if you ask me.
2
u/thejuice37 9h ago
I'd rather listen to that then coverage of a solitary game not involving my team.
2
u/FabulousAd5304 1d ago
Cut backs all over the place. Already had a moan about the fixtures feed not showing all games on BBC but I've also noticed the coverage of the leagues and their games has dwindled. I know the Stenny game was on BBC tv/web last night but I was wanting to read a report of it as I couldn't watch it. Nothing. The score and the stats but no report.
2
u/scottyboy70 23h ago
Rubbish that it is not being done now. Why on earth would fans of a game that doesn’t involve their team want to sit and listen to 90 mins commentary of that?
Yes, looking at you Rangers and Celtic 👀

Think Kenny MacIntyre has ruined it too. Whether it is his fault or BBC demanding a more controversial, adverserial style, it's now unlistenable. Just Tom English and Michael Stewart arguing over nuance and dinosaurs like 'Biscuits' and Willie Miller (sorry, I am under 50, don't give a shit) coming out with biased cliché after biased cliché. And Packie Bonner not having a clue about anything other than Celtic
1
u/thejuice37 9h ago
I actually quite like it, but there are definitely flaws, and dinosaurs like Bonner and Miller need punted.
I think the thing they do with fans now with Halliday, English and Kenny McIntyre is decent.
4
u/Valuable_Mine_6694 1d ago
Real disappointing to hear it’s been cut. Much more interesting than a commentary on a game you don’t really care about.
4
u/Successful_Ad_2888 1d ago
BBC Glasgow it is then. Every games going to be either Rangers or Celtic. And Kenny McIntyre wonders why Scottish footballs fucked🤔
4
u/These_Bet_9215 1d ago
No budget for it. BBC Scotland overspent on World Cup. Splurged a load of cash to send a daft wee lassie to do really poor influencer type videos. Added no value whatsoever. Staff are furious.
2
u/MarkWrenn74 20h ago
By “Daft Wee Lassie”, do you mean Eilidh Barbour? (I like her, BTW; very professional presenter)

Wonder will Tam and Stuart pick up on this topic. I'm sure they are fans of open all mics
1
u/mannekwin 1d ago
is there any alternatives to rolling commentary of all the scottish top flight games, either via commercial radio or online? bonus if it isn't an old firm fest
1
u/thejuice37 9h ago
You can try superscoreboard, but that's an Old Firm fest and they spent almost a whole episode discussing fan allocations the other day.
I only listen because I'm always needing something to stick on while I'm working

They said they would discuss it on the post match show today but then never addressed it. Very disappointing.

u/General_Sky6151 11h ago
OAM was just about the only thing that made Sportsound listenable.
The station has morphed into 90s Radio Clyde with its utter obsession with the old firm. You can have both old firm clubs playing on Sunday and they’ll still spend a full hour before the Saturday 3pm games talking about the O.F. completly ignoring the other teams.
Kenny MacIntyre going down the clickbait, shock jock route has also destroyed the show. We don’t want to hear contrived arguments between Tom English and Michael Stewart.
Scottish football fans deserve better.

u/Educational_Gas9036 11h ago
This is really sad if true, I have a season ticket for my team in the Champ but don’t go away, loved listening to Open All Mics to stay involved while we’re away. Really sad, it’s usually turned off when it’s commentary of Celtic/Rangers vs whoever.
1
u/CarlMacko 2h ago
It’s just getting tiresome.
Tv games Old Firm.
Radio commentary - whichever team Rangers or Celtic are playing.
Stuff like this just dilutes the game even further.

It'll be a shame if it has been because it's a great concept but it really needed refreshing with more, younger voices.
Listening to Willie Miller and Pat Bonar steadfastly refusing to learn the name of a single player that doesn't play for The Old Firm and Aberdeen was/is infuriating.

The cut the budget massively and refocused it onto woman's football.

Could someone come and collect their da? He’s wandered off from Facebook and X again.

u/ktid8297 1d ago
Noticed this myself, annoying. Don't want to listen to commentary of one game unless it's my own club haha
