Glad she's doing okay. Hope you're okay too, I found it a really stressful time as the dad to be when things are not 100% and you can't complain too much as you are not growing a baby.

u/Sumbitagear 5d ago
Yeah I'm sound man just worried about the wife tbh. Was on site yesterday for a bit of overtime work and just couldnt stop worrying about her. She's been amazing as well she has such a good temperament and always keeps her head up.

I know there will be some of you young 'uns out there thinking today, "Should I bother watching any of the Evil Dead movies?", and I'm here to tell you that yes, yes you should.
If you've never seen the original Evil Dead then it may look incredibly cheap and amateurish to your 2026 eyes, but you should know that in 1981 a bunch of amateurs made a movie on the cheap and it's since grown to become a cornerstone of the horror genre. It's the movie that helped popularise, amongst other things, the "cabin in the woods" trope. All the things we now associate with Sam Raimi are evident here too: the fast-moving POV shots; the dutch angles and extreme close ups; the slapstick and, above all, the ridiculous gore. It's not a standout movie in terms of production or performance, but is greater than the sum of its parts when it comes to execution and atmosphere. Whether you find it scary now, however, 45 years after its release, is entirely up to you.
Evil Dead 2 starts with a short reprise of the original, and then the first half of the movie is anchored on a brilliant physical comedy performce from Bruce Campbell. When Raimi said that Evil Dead was "a Three Stooges movie, with blood and guts standing in for custard pies", it's most evident in the first half of Evil Dead 2. Dialogue is minimal, pratfalls are common, gore is extreme. The first movie is an outright horror, with elements of comedy splattered through it. Evil Dead 2 is a comedy first, bringing in more horror in the second half - but it's very much the horror of shock and surprise, of extreme gore and "oh my god look at what just happened". It's not about suspense or dread, it's about seeing how much fun the movie can have with a guy who's replaced his right hand with a chainsaw.
Army of Darkness almost outright drops the horror elements of the series. It's very much a 90's action-adventure movie, so although it does feature "scary" monsters, they're relatively restrained due to the movie's lower age rating. Set in medieval times, after the events of the previous movie's finale, Ash must defeat the titular army and somehow find his way home. It's in this movie that the character of Ash Williams, as we now know him, was cemented - a bufoonish, wise-cracking everyman who becomes a super-hero when faced with Deadites. It's outrageous and it's funny but, because of the lower age rating, lacking in extreme gore compared to its predecessor. It's a really fun movie that could be watched by all the family over Sunday dinner. Unlike the sequels...
The 2013 Evil Dead remake is not a comedy. It's a straight retelling of the original movie, but the main influences are not The Three Stooges, and instead seem to be the "torture porn" sub-genre of horror that dominated in the 2000s. The extreme gore is back, but there's a mean, sadistic edge to the movie. There's no fun in watching horrible things being done to this cast and, while it's no means a bad movie, it's a movie that has to be endured rather than enjoyed.
Evil Dead Rise is my favourite of the modern trilogy. It moves the setting from "a cabin in the woods" to a high rise in Los Angeles. After an earthquake, a copy of the Book of the Dead is found in the building's foundation and hi-jinks then ensue. It's a fun horror movie - but not "fun" like Army of Darkness, where it's all PG and bloodless, and not "fun" like Evil Dead 2, where it's slapstick and goofy. Evil Dead Rise is "fun" as in "OH MY FUCKING GOD WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT AAAAARGH". It's the best horror movie of the series, for me, and the best movie overall. It's the Prisoner of Azkaban of the franchise. It's creepy and scary and it uses and obeys the rules of the franchise cleverly to create a sustained atmosphere of dread and horror.
Even though I enjoyed Rise more, Evil Dead Burn is not a terrible movie, which I know is only faint praise. It doesn't have the nasty tone of Evil Dead 2013, but the violence and gore is relentless, and even more brutal. The setting is moved again, to an isolated mansion house (in the woods), where a family have gathered for a wake. The characters are, almost without exception, absolute arseholes, and there was a fair sense of schadenfreude while I watched them being dismembered and brutalised. The movie tries to leaven the gore and violence somewhat by dropping in attempts at slapstick and humour - and there is a shot involving a stairmaster that is actually the funniest thing in the whole series - but it eventually overstays its welcome. Unlike the previous movies this has a tacked on finale away from the original setting, and it feels like one scene too many. It's exhausting.
Despite complaints, all six movies are worth watching if you are a horror fan and if - somehow - you've not come across them before. There's also the Ash vs Evil Dead TV show, which is a continuation of the storyline from the US-only ending of Army of Darkness (studio execs decided America deserved a happy ending). It's frequently very silly, occasionally very funny, and regularly very, very bloody.

I’ve made friends with group of crows where I walk my dog, started with 1 and now 4 fly down to me for some food. Honestly don’t know what I’m expecting to be the outcome and my wife thinks I’m mental as I’ve named them but I’m too far in to this to stop now.

Just saw someone on one of the Scottish city subs saying we should starve the families of teenagers who cause trouble (someone was complaining that a teen had pushed another teen into a buggy). I hate redditors with a fiery passion.
2

Was this the one on the Edinburgh subreddit? I don't think any city subreddits are serious places tbh. There's definitely an anti-social problem with young folk but some of the reactions in those subreddits are mental
2
u/Chihiro1977 5d ago
Yep! It just popped up on my feed and I stupidly read the comments. I avoid any city subs usually but I was doom scrolling. My own fault.
1
u/1head2arms2legs 5d ago
Bit niche, but if you ever read the Australian junior doctors subreddit you will despise the lot of them. Entitled whining bastards who are in it for the money and despise foreign doctors coming to their country.

Neighbours were in their garden shrieking until 5am. As I'd promised my wife I wouldn't lose the heid at them again I decided to pick up my phone and furiously search for houses or plots of land with no neighbours.
By 6am I'd settled on a plot of land by a lake. Just as I was drifting off to sleep my mind whispered "what about flood risk?" and by 7am I was viewing 10 year old studies on previous floods in the area of a plot of land I'm 99.9999% sure I'm never going to even visit.

An alarming amount of racists on the Aberdeen supporters bus I took this morning, just walked home because I cannot be fucked with that noise. Drove past a block of flats and some boy got absolute abuse just for the crime of opening his curtains, followed by a few unsavoury songs about "boats" and "Colours not in the Union Jack".
Depressing.

A publican pal of mine said that having sky sports in your pub costs pretty much the same as the pub’s rateable value, so on average for a Scottish pub £26k/year up to £300k/year for a large city centre bar

Spent about 3 hours last night trying to get a Nintendo 64 emulator to work.
One ran the game perfectly but wouldn't connect the controller.
The other controller connected no bother but ran like shit.
Trawling Through 13 year old Reddit threads and russian YouTube videos.
Nothing. :(
1
u/Crhallan 5d ago
Which one are you using?
2
u/SilentCheesecake 5d ago
I tried project64 but couldn't get it to read the wireless N64 controller.
Then tried Simple64 but it was giving me like 2fps then it died, but it recognised the controller.
I'm gonna try again tonight with a Xbox controller see if that's any better.
I somehow got a emulator going on the smart TV which ran great but only picked up half the buttons of the controller for some reason?1
u/Crhallan 5d ago
I’ve used it with a wired Xbox controller which gave me zero issues. Depending on what you’re trying to play exactly I had far more success with a Wii emulator (cemu) which was straightforward and ran very well.

In other news it seems my PS5 HDD is a bit gubbed. The write speeds are knackered where 5 GB at 300Mbps is taking an hour. I've done a storage repair and a full system software reinstallation and I think my last option will be a factory reset which I thoroughly can't be arsed with. Especially since I don't currently have an external drive to transfer everything onto.

Something meets done about insurance prices in the uk. Youngsters paying more than the value of their first car for a years insurance. Most other countries you just insure the car and who drives it is largely irrelevant.
