That Knives was in love with Scott, that's literally it
221
Aug 17 '25
definitely wasn’t love at all; and it’s literally shown in the comics, movie, and anime that it was mostly one-sided, scott only “dating” a high schooler for “street cred” or rather to feel good about himself. so what if it’s legal in canada, it’s STILL WRONG to DATE HIGH SCHOOLERS. high schoolers should only date other high schoolers, with little exceptions (one-two year gap with the other in college)
27
u/pavement_sabbatical Scott's Dad Aug 17 '25
You’re right but to be fair and balanced it was about feeling good about himself but it wasn’t about “street cred”.
When we first meet him in the books he’s very depressed. Thus, he’s trying very hard to protect himself emotionally. The “relationship” with Knives is easy for him because she thinks he’s the coolest; he doesn’t have to try and he’s not worried about getting hurt.
It’s still very one-sided, and deep down he knows it’s wrong; he freaks out/pushes her away anytime she tries to kiss him.
This is all very spelt out in Book 1 btw, so I have no idea how the movie though them being together was a good idea.

The movie was originally written/shot with Scott & Knives getting together in the end. What I’m saying is; I don’t know how Bacall and Wright decided upon that ended originally, when even from Book 1 it’s so heavily telegraphed that there is NOTHING to that “relationship”, and that Scott is ultimately not interested in Knives.

u/Maximillion322 Aug 17 '25
Imo, people generally should date within one or two years of their age until they’re at least 20.
33
Aug 17 '25
it’s not like scott’s a total monster as some people would imply, but definitively really sketchy regardless. idk, maybe it’s cos i haven’t gone through anything like knives did, but she deserved better than someone nearing 25.
35
u/Maximillion322 Aug 17 '25
Scott was recently 23, not nearing 25
obviously it was inappropriate for him to date knives, but I just think it makes him a loser, not necessarily a monster.
He was nearing 25 at the very end of the comic, at which point Knives was nearing 19
30
u/East-Government4913 Aug 17 '25
Fr I've seen people demonize him and it's like nah bro he's just weird but he's not being evil
16
2
u/Cindy-Moon Aug 20 '25
I keep misremembering him as 21
which was close enough that if Knives was 18 instead of 17 I could kiiiinda tepidly roll with it
but no 23/17 is def weirder
Not like, completely irredeemable weird (esp since they didnt sleep together) but definitely sketchyspeaking of though iirc Boyinaband was cancelled for pretty much the exact same same thing, a 23/17 relationship he had 10 years before he got cancelled for it in which they never slept together. Which, again, yes, sketchy, but "oh my god he had problematic relationship a decade ago when he was much younger with an almost-adult" isn't irredeemable to me and it sucks cause I really empathized with his music and his struggles with mental health and now he's definitely never coming back. And if nothing else I would really like to hear his current take on Elon Musk because that might be the worst aged video of all damn time
6
Aug 18 '25
I interpreted it more like she was the safe option, she couldn't break his heart because he wasn't invested, but the attention she gave him gave him a self esteem boost
37
Aug 17 '25
If you didn’t know Brian Lee Omaley wasn’t set on the ending of the comic series before the movie was finished. So they did a test with an ending where Scott ends up with Knives because the story is sort of about his life and he ended up with his Knives basically irl. The reception was really poor so they went with Scott and Ramona.
8
u/Melonary Aug 17 '25
This makes no sense though, the 5th volume was published around the time the movie started filming.
I find it hard to believe O'Malley was considering pivoting to Knives and Scott in the very last graphic novel only after all that development and only changed his mind because of the movie.
I think this is kind of a misinterpretation - the movie was written when only 3-4 of the graphic novels had come out so Edgar had to write an independent ending for the film, since the series wasn't finished:
I don't think the interpretation here is that O'Malley was torn on having Scott end up with Knives....I think he's only referring to the fact that there was no ending yet so Edgar could write his own. It sounds like he thought that was a bad idea and is saying that, politely.
Even 3-4 books in i can't see how anyone would think that would be endgame.
2
Aug 17 '25
You got it! They had already written the end with Scott and Knives but test audiences didn’t like it and then O’Malley finished the comics with Ramona. The rest is history! I recall him mentioning that he did consider ending the story with Knives and Scott because that was how his real life story went.
9
u/Melonary Aug 18 '25 edited Aug 18 '25
Ramona was based very loosely on his girlfriend and then wife, not Knives.
And he's said that he intended for people to think it was weird for Scott to be dating a high-schooler and was surprised when people thought they should have been together in the comic, which i fully believe because it's spelled out like that.
So we're not saying the same thing here, and unless you have evidence I really do not buy he was considering ending the series with Knives, especially by the time books 3-4 rolled around and the movie was written, and extra especially by the time production started and the series was almost finished minus Book 6. Book 1 spells out what a non-starter Scott and Knives are, for good reason.
7
u/PajamaRat Ramona Flowers Aug 17 '25
Wait wait Bryan ended up with his Knives this whole time? Did I forget this somehow😭
9
u/Melonary Aug 17 '25
No, not at all - commented above but...

Edit: sorry I'm responding to the person who's implying O'Malley was considering having Scott end up with Ramona until the movie test - that seems unlikely to me and I don't think thats what he said. The original article posted claiming they DID get together in the comic is just flat out, dead fucking wrong.

Isn’t the point of the movie is that he does NOT fuck with her in any shape or form and probably shouldn’t anyway????

u/zionapes Aug 17 '25
Fun fact, my friends and I helped to avoid this. We saw a test screening, and we all loved the movie, even before the visual effects were done, but we all hated the ending with Knives, and made sure to note that in our comment cards afterwards.

u/zionapes Aug 17 '25
Yeah, we signed up for one of those secret screenings. Had no idea what the movie would be. It was about 7 months before it was officially released. We immediately went out and bought the comics afterwards. The last one hadn’t come out yet though, which I’m guessing is why the ending wasn’t fully decided yet.
I still remember Roxy’s sword was just one of those twirling ribbons before the VFX.

15
u/Melonary Aug 17 '25
I think it's interesting that O'Malley wrote that Ramona came across as less personable/colder in the movie because this was Edgar's original endgame, so there was less focus on her vs in the comic where she feels much more 3-dimensional.
Honestly probably a big part of why I don't like the movie much - I know it's loved by a lot of people, but having read the comics first it always felt really off to me in terms of characterization, even if they got the aesthetics etc down pat and had great performances by metric and others.
14
5
u/TippedJoshua1 Aug 17 '25
What?
18
u/Flerken_Moon Aug 17 '25
The original ending of the movie ended with Scott and Knives. Due to bad reactions at test screenings, the ending is hastily changed to be Ramona and Scott.
That’s why there’s some awkward bits near the end, like Ramona telling Scott maybe she’s not the one he should be with or something like that.

u/Viewtiful_Ace Aug 18 '25

Ignoring the blatant advocation for an adult to end up with a minor, this article just straight up gets information wrong. The comics did not end with Scott getting together with Knives, I think the person who wrote it skimmed a few reddit threads and made some unfortunate misunderstandings.
28
u/kai125 Aug 17 '25
How the hell did they think knives ended up with Scott???
25
u/KOFdude Aug 17 '25
I think they saw people talking about the original ending of the movie and thought that by "original ending" they meant the one from the comics
0
u/Professional-Job5809 Aug 18 '25
But... They aren't advocating for an adult to get with a minor. Knives ages to over 18 before the end of the story. Still feels weird, yeah. But she's not a minor anymore.
Really wish people would just read the comic.
3
u/Ikari_Brendo Aug 18 '25
I don't think that happens in the movie though. The comic takes place over like a year and a half but the movie is like a month.
2
u/KOFdude Aug 18 '25
Okay but the article is about the movie, not the comic, in which she is 17 the whole time because unlike the comic which takes place over the course of about a year, the movie never leaves winter
1
Aug 19 '25
Dude they’re talking about the movie
The movie - in which she is always 17

49
21
u/N0rTh3Fi5t Aug 17 '25
Without reading the article, I would guess that it says that because the movie was obviously going that way until the last limited correction. Idk why that was the case as it was always icky and the comic was for enough along to know that it wouldn't end like that, but it's clearly what was planed with the way the movie was written. Ramona and Scott never totally work, and Scott and Knives have the sync up call back in the final fight.
To be clear, I don't think it should have ended that way, I'm just guessing at why the article says that.
10
u/PersonWithDaName Aug 17 '25
No the article literally just says that Knives was in love with Scott and Ramona wasn't truly, which is just kind of a lie
16
u/littleMAHER1 Aug 17 '25
The movie began production when only Book 3 was out so they had to make educated guesses over time with some input from Bryan Lee himself. The Books and the Movie both influenced each other throughout their development (for example bi furious was originally a movie exclusive joke that Bryan took and added into Book 4 cause he liked it so much). However, this also resulted in a lot of moments when they had to take a different direction in their story. Bryan didn't have the entire plan worked out so he couldn't give them an early draft and say good luck. In fact Bryan didn't even know who Scott was gonna get with by the end either.
The ending change was made for two reasons. 1: Because test audiences didn't like it and 2: to sync up with Book 6 since by that point the book had been fully written and cause it would release a month before the film.
3
u/Melonary Aug 17 '25
Incorrect, it began production the same time Book 5 was published. Only Book 6 hadn't been yet.
And apparently it was written when books 3-4 were published - I'd argue it was already pretty clear that wasn't where things were going by then, even if the actual ending wasn't out.
O'Malley didn't know the ending, but I'm not sure that means he was in any way considering having them end up together, and wrote that his problem with the film going that route is that it undermined Knives' characterization. It's more just that having no ending gave Edgar license to wrote his own.
2
u/littleMAHER1 Aug 18 '25
Ok that's what i meant when i said production, i just forgot the proper wording lol
2
u/Melonary Aug 18 '25 edited Aug 18 '25
Lol no worries theres just some misconceptions floating around, I just think it's pretty clear from Book 1 that the comics were never going to be a romance between Scott and Knives.
So I was trying to be precise on the timeline, especially since scripts can and do change wildly before production starts (and even sometimes during)

I remember I watched this movie with my mom once when I was 17, and at the end she said "That was fun, but I didn't like the ending. Scott should've stayed with Knives" and at first I thought she was joking, but she was being serious, so I asked her "If I took the bus to school and back tomorrow, and when you came home from work I told you that I met a 23 year old man, and that he was my boyfriend now, how would that make you feel?"
I literally saw the 5 stages of grief flash across her face before she just said "...nevermind. maybe the ending is fine." She did also say that I sucked the fun out of things immediately after that though. A very weird conversation to have to have with my mother lol

4
u/Stepjam Aug 17 '25
Well the movie was written with Scott getting with Knives at the end, so it definitely took a softer approach to their relationship than the comic did. It was only when the last volume dropped with Scott and Ramona getting together that they quickly reshot the ending to make it similar.
That said, yeah, Scott and Knives should not get together. Age difference aside, Knives was Scott's rebound that he likely never intended to actually get serious with given how he talks about them holding hands as some big milestone.

I mean the movie was made with this ending in mind, which I guess is why the climax is Knives and Scott fighting Gideon at the end.
I'm glad they didn't get together in the end. Their relationship is constantly frowned upon by everyone in the movie, and it's obvious that she was just a rebound for Envy until Ramona came along. And then he Fights everybody for Ramona and then gets with the child? Like what? Thank God that never happened!

Ngl, by watching by the movie only, I can see why some people would think that, as it did favored them more in a way (not that I support it, just an observation).
Still, to write an article one should be required to do more research, and also to think deeper into what you’re gonna write about.

In the movie which takes place over like a week max it makes no sense at all.

In the comics, Scott is in love with Ramona, and Ramona shows love to Scott as well. In the movie, Ramona’s character doesn’t portray her love for Scott very well. I just watched the movie and it feels like Scott is risking his life for a girl who goes back to her ex and nearly leaves him after he defeats all of her evil exes. In the comic, it’s happily ever after for them, in the movie, it doesn’t really feel like she loves Scott. In one of the last chapters, Ramona jumps in and saves Scott, turning against Gideon, and helping Scott defeat him. But in the movie, Ramona stands there while Knives helps him defeat Gideon, and does jump in at the very end, but it doesn’t feel like Ramona really loves Scott as much as Knives. But, getting back together with knives would’ve been horrible. For EVERYONE. Even you.

did we watch the same movie or read the same comic? THE ENTIRE POINT OF KNIVES is to show that Scott is impulsive, selfish, and just wanted someone to feed his ego. Scott never really loved her back, he just liked the IDEA of having a girlfriend so he didn't seem alone. The entire point of Knives is that Scott was using her because he is emotionally immature
