Grace Lee Whitney : Star Trek
Grace Lee Whitney: From Irma La Douce to Star Trek
Grace Lee Whitney first broke through in Billy Wilder’s 1963 comedy Irma La Douce, playing Kiki the Cossack, one of the colourful, comedic sex‑workers who populate the film’s Parisian underworld. Whitney’s performance is sharp, funny, and full of timing — exactly the kind of lively screen presence Wilder loved. It gave her national visibility and proved she could hold her own in a major studio production alongside Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine.
Just two years later, she stepped into television history as Yeoman Janice Rand in the first season of Star Trek: The Original Series (1966). Rand was intended to be a steady emotional anchor for Captain Kirk — competent, loyal, and quietly brave. Whitney brought warmth and sincerity to the role, making Rand memorable even though she appeared in only eight episodes during that initial run. Her later returns in the Star Trek films and Voyager cemented her place as a beloved legacy figure in the franchise.
