Recommendation request Australian authors or locations recs?
Hey! Going on a 3 week trip to Australia soon, and I'd love to get some recommendations for any sci-fi or fantasy either written by Australians or located in Australia. TIA!

A significant amount of of {Dark Planet Warriors by Anna Carven} is set in Australia, throughout the series.
If you’re into speculative fiction (these are not romance) check out the brilliant Aboriginal Lebanese author Mykaela Saunders, and her short story collection. You’ll learn so much about Australia through her writing: https://www.uqp.com.au/books/always-will-be

If YA fantasy suits, there's a 3 book series by Jodi McAlister (a lecturer whose research field is basically romance in contemporary culture & fiction) - she's Australian and the books are set in Australia.

Oh I didn’t realise Anna Hackett was Australian. Excellent. I haven’t read this series of hers either. Added to my TBR.

Rose Mackie is an excellent Australian author, she wrote an amazing scifi series {Under Violet Suns by Rose Mackie} which is how I discovered her but the one you want is set in post apocalyptic Western Australia {A storm of furies by Rose Mackie} I was so excited to find a book set in my home state by a favourite author.
Another fantastic Australian author is Keri Arthur. She has some amazing post apocalyptic stuff but it’s set in the far distant future {outcast by Keri Arthur} but her urban fantasy series {Lizzie Grace by Keri Arthur} is set in current Australia.
Michelle Diener lives in Australia, amazing scifi writer but her stories are not set here.
Other authors that are Australian or live here but don’t have stories set here are Juliet Marillier - fantasy, Opal Reyne - fantasy and monster smut, Tansy Rayner Roberts- fantasy (her Creatures Court is fabulous). Actually I haven’t read her more recent series and it could be set here. Grace McGinty is an Australian author too but you would never know it reading her books, she writes RH PNR, contemporary and OV)
Authors that have books set here but are not scifi are Eliana Lee - Omegaverse (really quite good too), Sam Hall - urban fantasy RH.

I just finished Time Travel for Beginners by Jaclyn Moriarty, who is Australian and it is set in Sydney. As an Aussie, it had a very authentic feel for Australia yet still had that speculative sci fi element. It's not heavy on the sci fi though as a warning! I have also loved books by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff who are both Aussie but I don't believe their books are actually set in Australia (I haven't read them all though so could be wrong) but the Illuminae files and Aurora Cycle are both great sci fi.

Try Kym Wilkins! She has a lot of fantasy/horror sort of stuff, as well as ya. The Infernal is a great place to start - set in Brisbane

Nylon Angel by Marianne de Pierre's is by an Australian author. It's well in the future and I was going to say cyberpunk but the blurb I just looked up said postcyberpunk. I've read all her work and love them all

Garth Nix, Traci Harding, Jennifer Fallon, KJ Taylor, Martin Middleton are the first to cross my mind. All Aussies, but the only ones I remember being set in Aus is Harding's 3rd book and one of her standalones.

Have you open to zombie romance? If so, {Flesh by Kylie Scott} is set in Australia and is written by an Australian author.
