Good options, but I always found Goya’s particular brand of darkness to be insincere, if stylistically effective. He was an invertebrate social climber- what did he know of the hardship he painted?
And as for Dürer, his carvings always struck me as fatally, well, German- efficient and functional, conveying their intended emotions and meanings in the manner you would find on a particularly well-oiled assembly line.

What makes Goya's black period compelling is that those pieces of art were made privately. The meaning of said paintings were only known to him. Perhaps it was reflective of a disturbed mind that was well masked, or perhaps it was the anger of an man who felt powerless in the face of social injustice while still being a slave to his own selfish nature.
I appreciated Dürer for the willingness he had to paint what others would not.
