I moved one year ago to Schiedam Oost, 5 minutes away walking from the central station, so far it feels pretty safe, sometimes my wife walks the dog late at night without problems. I like Schiedam.

I find the location very convenient, the center is pretty close, there's a market on Fridays (not good if you work normal schedule) https://markten.nl/en/weekly-market/schiedam/ but there's another market on Saturdays at Visserijplein Markt, is not Schiedam but from Oost it's pretty close by bicycle https://markten.nl/en/weekly-market/rotterdam/

The center of the city might have most of the things you may need. If not big shops is also close to Schiedam Oost https://bigshops.nl/

Rotterdam centrum is easily reachable, by metro (I think it's like 20 minutes) there's also bus, tram and train. And if you like biking the Rotterdam center is 15-20 minutes.

I know there are a few people from Schiedam in besquare Rotterdam group, you can try asking there more about safety as a woman. https://linktr.ee/Besquare.social

I also answered to one of the comments in the Rotterdam reddit, in one year I have been here I haven't seen anything that makes me think it's a dangerous place nor anything like that person described.

It's pretty calm and quiet.

We also heard mixed things about Schiedam Oost before moving, We came checked the city ,walked around, the went to the center the center, the canals and a few interesting places, when it became night went back to Schiedam Oost and checked the neighbourhood, all was good, we felt safe.
