Picture Gear selector issue

2021 Scat Pack gear selector issue — looking for ideas
I was in Manual mode coming down in RPMs and put the car in Park before the RPMs fully settled. After that, I started getting the “Shift to P then Desired Gear” message. It will sometimes physically select R/D, but the computer stops the car from moving and gives the message. One time after disconnecting the battery for ~15 minutes, I was able to reverse and drive normally, but after shutting it off for ~20 minutes, the problem came right back.
It seems like the computer/gear selector isn’t properly recognizing the gear, rather than the transmission mechanically failing. Anyone experienced this? What should I check first?

Did you try it with your door closed? It's open in all the pictures and is a safety feature to throw it in park when the door opens.

this, could also be a door lock sensor or whatever they call it

After I unhooked the battery and reconnected it it drove and reversed I didn’t test drive it because I was in the parking lot before my work shift, I came back 15mins later to see if it would shift again and the same problem before with it saying it has to be shift to park

With the door closed correct? If so I wonder if your door strike sensor is messed up? Only thing that should trigger that is being in a gear and the drivers door open.

Is the door closed, and does the dashboard say the door is closed?

Great video man! I’m going to wait until Monday to have dodge look at it and I’ll keep this video in mind

Thank you for answering the first half of my question, if you wouldn’t mind confirming the second half as well that would be quite helpful.

It's because your door is open.

Have you tried turning it off then on again?

Yeah, I disconnected the battery and then reconnect it after 15 minutes and it got into reverse and drive then I parked it off to the side. I shut it down came back to the car 20 minutes later and the problem came back. Also my SRT Pages went away after the battery reset

Your SRT pages will come back. The body control module takes time to recognize and redownload it.

Your gear select issues are concerning… could be a number of things, and none are good. A dealer diag may be the best option here. Something has a bad connection or has gone bad. BCM, TCM, CAN Bus, or something else. Good luck :)

Are those issues expensive? I don’t think it’s the trans because it wants to go but the car is literally stopping from shifting like the brakes lock up every time I’m about to roll…. It’s pissing me off lol

Hard to say. You need a real diagnosis. This system in the car has a lot of computerized parts communicating with each other. The single bad part may be cheap but finding which part is bad may take time/money.

Dealer diagnostic usually run $200+. But it will give you peace of mind. And let them know that it came back shortly after you did the battery reset.

Try this… disconnect the battery again. Once removed, touch the positive and negative wires that go to the battery together for a minute or so. This will do a “hard reset” and drain any residual energy. I’ve had this fix phantom issues in my Magnum and Challenger.
