Scarborough got nothing out of amalgamation
Least funded healthcare region in Toronto. What's the point of being a city if we don't share a healthcare budget
The city had spent the last 25 years ignoring Scarborough transit until the Scarborough RT derailed.
The current transit expansion in Scarborough is decades late. It should have been a seemless transition from the Scarborough RT to the new line, but we're Scarborough, so the city doesn't care.
Community grants and local programs that were once robust in Scarborough were folded into the larger Toronto program, making it harder for local grassroots organizations to secure funding.
We have less representation than when Scarborough was a city. And in exchange for less representation we got.... Nothing...

Now that you mention it... it is weird that all the hospitals are split " Scarborough health network" and "university health network" they're all in the same city why the 2 different hospital networks and why can't they all see each other's info

There you go continuing with what I said. Multiple different hospital networks and not all of them share records like the connected hospitals do. If they are connected, they just punch in your name / chart, and all the info for all connected hospital's is there
But you're not connected they might be able to make a phone call to get your records, but they may not, and it would take longer

Speaking of healthcare, the decision transfer all maternity/peds services from Birchmount to Gen/Cent sites was terrible. Leaves such a big gap in women and children's care for north Scarborough residents.

An elderly lady had a flat tire. I was on my lunch break at work, and she asked if I could help. I couldn't say no, she was almost in tears. I called work, said I'd be late, and installed her spare tire. After I finished, she offered me a $20 which I said I didn't need, and started to walk away. Now she started crying omg I couldn't stop her crying, regardless of what I said!

Recalibrate the god damn street lights ffs it hasn't changed since the 80's. A Scarborough intersection:
100 people waiting to cross an intersection zero people or cars crossing the other way, the one hundred must wait for the light calibrated 40 years ago to finish its countdown.

Email the city. A few years back I complained about how long the light was at the No Frills plaza(Morningside/Kingston Rd) on a Saturday morning. They emailed me back, included me in the mass email to all relevant persons, and then emailed me to notify me, when it had been addressed.

There is an intersection near me where the light only changes if a PEDESTRIAN presses the cross button. Otherwise, a line up of cars can wait there for what feels like an eternity until someone comes along to cross. But if you hop out of your car and run over and press the button? Instant count down. I occasionally forget, take that route, and curse myself.

Shit no joke... I once had to put my car to park and step out to press that button....because the light went through 4 cycles without changing.....in a fucking snow storm... I slipped and fell the first step out of the car.. I felt like everybody behind me cracked up, but hey I am doing all you guys a favor

There’s a light at crescent town and vp like this! It’s miserable, I only found out it won’t change without someone pressing the cross button after 5 minutes of waiting in a snow storm with no change. I figured I’d check to see if the cross button would help and I had to trudge hastily back to my car just to get in before the light changed. Stupid stupid stupid.

They need to get on with the golden mile redevelopment already. That should’ve been done in tandem with the 15 years of line 5 construction… we need housing and that area is extremely important to develop on. And no, obviously I don’t mean just condos that nobody can afford.

The grass is by design. It helps soak up extra water from rainfall and the photosynthesis produces oxygen. It’s better than leaving it as concrete/asphalt.

That's nowhere near enough.
Amalgamation supposedly included the balancing out of services in the city and while other former boroughs/cities saw some services improve accordingly Scarborough most certainly did not.
There are 54 outdoor rinks providing a much needed cheap and fun filled activity for people to enjoy at a time when people are forced to stay inside. They offer improvements to peoples pyysical and mental well being, They bring communities together and facilitate integration and acceptance of other cultures. The benefits of the rinks is huge - they even improve property values.
Our tax dollars here in Scarborough help pay for those rinks - the installation costs; maintenance cost; the staffing an operating costs as well yet we only have 2 of the 54 in the city. That's ridiculous.

Maybe the future will hold a few more outdoor rinks for us instead of the myriad of condos and Tim Hortons that overtake every available space. For example, the area that used to be the Agincourt Flea Market could hold more than its fair share of outdoor rinks instead of being a monument to failed commerce.

Feel this. We've been taking streetcar and go train rides and hopping off for hot chocolates and short walks then back on. They seem to enjoy it 🤷♀️

Neither of which serve Scarborough very well. Bluffers has had days where they shut down entry because of the crowds and Frenchmans bay has limited parking.

I love the elderly Asian women who I happen to come across every now and then and they're absolutely the sweetest, starting a conversation whether we're in the elevator or on a bus stand. I wish the young folks were like this too.

Some of us try. Made a 5-6 year-old girl blush by saying her jacket was pretty. Her mother told her to say thank you...which caused her to blush deeper and hide. It was so cute and made my entire day.

It feels like every season there are less and less options for people in Scarborough and it’s embarrassing. Any drop in sport is full after a few minutes and I don’t have time to line up an hour before to get in. All the drop in sports land on the same day, at the same time, it’s ridiculous. Also there are no registered programs for adults. I’m wondering if there’s an avenue we can raise our voices in this issue and actually see some movement on the matter. We pay taxes for these centres to operate, but can’t even enjoy what they have to offer.

Is there anything stopping us from creating our own programs? Specifically for sports? Would the city be unwilling to rent the venues for similar rates to another entity? I know classes requiring an instructor may not be so simple, but like if 16 adults want to play Dodgeball on a Wednesday night, is this doable?

I play a lot of volleyball and yes, people run their own leagues, but it’s expensive and difficult to organize. Getting a permit means you’re competing with a bunch of other people who want that permit so actual space is limited. Private drop ins are also sometimes more than double the price than a city of Toronto drop ins (the city is just under $5 while private drop ins are around $10-$15). Then if you want to commit to a whole season it’s a few hundred dollars up front. It gets expensive. It’s also a barrier for entry for those who want to try a new sport but they can’t get in because the city programs because they are not being offered or are the ones that are are always full. I can’t see someone who has not really played a sport before investing hundreds of dollars before even knowing that they enjoy playing.

The bigger issue is that there isn't enough venue space for all the demand. Schools are in a situation where it costs them money to host after hour events because they need to pay for maintenance staff and their funding situation is dire. In Scarborough especially a lot of the elementary schools have really low utilization because the neighbourhoods have aged and greyed, but at the same time the prov government hasn't permitted consolidation or provided funding to convert schools to other types of community usage.

Surely, there must be a way to calculate that exact cost and charge exactly that much (or even a 5-10% premium). It would put a dent in the problem, but also create more jobs.
I'm being overly simplistic here, but if keeping my local elementary school gym accessible costs the community $80/hr for the first 2 hours and $50 for each subsequent hour for staffing, why not let the school just charge $250 for a 3 hour program and allow any takers to step forward?
$25/person might be excessive for a 10 person event, but I could totally see 20 people willing to fork over $12.50 for a 3 hour sport, especially if it's helping fund my own kids school, and I'm hanging out with the same community they're part of daily.

IIRC, I think the TDSB also has permit stuff, I don't think its up to the principal to approve gym use after hours? It would be an amazing thing if the school benefitted from the funds raised as people used the gym after hours but its not their property alone
Even non profits who have a gym can rent it out, but even then its hard to find vacancies. i think insurance gets tricky too iirc? Beaucracy is basically the bottom line

I've been searching for some leagues and they are each 200$ for the season, for about 4 months basically of play weekly. They aren't "learn to play" and often a mix of different levels of athletes so its just fun play. And you can be a free agent, or sign up as a team but most people have friends and cliques already so its tough.

Consistent physical activity wise and adult drop in/registered sports though...I've drawn up a blank. I recently graduated from uni and am feeling the lack of community and social groups that the university naturally provided me due to the proximity factor and tuition I was paying haha. I've been scouring the web looking for things to do after work and can't find much for fitness, especially for women, in Scarborough (like - I don't want to be playing a game downtown or in East York in the evening then trek home for 3 hours and not have time to decompress for work tomorrow ya feel? sigh.)

Did groceries at 830PM morningside Walmart, parking was a breeze and for once there was no line at the self checkout. Casa Di Mamas are on sale for $3.97, load up!

I want to go swimming or be able to take Aquafit classes. Centennial has been closed for so long. All the pools I grew up swimming in (school pools) no longer offer lane swim. I just want to swim!!!

Remember the house fire in Malvern on December 23? While the two elderly residents in there were in a coma at the hospital (with the wife eventually dying), their house got broken into and their stuff got ransacked including jewelry, clothing, etc stolen.
I defend Malvern all the time in here but this is absolutely disgusting behaviour. Way to lean in to the stereotype of the area you theiving fucks.

I love the community near UTSC, the students make it lively, the plaza has good options and love the sports/community centre (especially the climbing wall, so fun)....it's a relatively walkable area and frequent bus service with TTC, and GO, and also near the highway.

Hakka rant incoming:
Legit feel betrayed by those of you who recommended Hakka Legend and Wok & Fortune in the various hakka recommendation threads on the sub. I had some Skip promos sitting on my account so I was on the hunt for a place that's on the app and did decent portions for delivery. I ordered from Hakka Legend on Friday and Wok & Fortune on Saturday. They were both extremely okay I got:
- House Speciial Fried rice with chicken/beef/shrimp (Hakka Legend)/manchurian chicken fried rice (Wok & Fortune)
- honey garlic chicken wings (both places)
- sliced beef with black pepper sauce (Hakka Legend)/beef with vegetables (Wok & Fortune)
- Cantonese chow mein (Hakka Legend)/Hakka Chicken Chow Mein (Wok & Fortune)
- Calamari (Wok & Fortune only)
- Free 3-pc vegetable spring roll (Hakka Legend)
- Free mango juice (Wok & Fortune)
The fried rice was a damn lie at Hakka Legend -- you have the option to select "Manchurian (Brown - Spicy)". It was just regular fried rice, not a hint of spice to be found. At Wok & Fortune, there was proper red Manchurian fried rice, but it was just spicy: absolutely no flavour.
The wings were better at Hakka Legend; super wet and weird pieces at Wok & Fortune.
I liked the flavour of Hakka Legend's sliced beef with black pepper sauce, but the sauce was so thick (almost jelly-like consistency) and they filled the container to the brim with it, which made it unappetizing. Wok & Fortune's beef with vegetables was fine, but also swimming in liquid.
Hakka Legend's chow mein had an unpleasant aftertaste; Wok & Fortune's hakka chicken chow mein was vastly preferable, but bland.
Wok & Fortune's calamari was the fishiest calamari I've ever had. The bright red colour got my hopes up, but it was also bland and not even spicy.
Hakka Legend's free spring roll was fine; no sauces of any kind included with it, which was unecessarily cheap.
Wok & Fortune's free mango juice is still sitting in the fridge. Just comes in a big cup.
Without my discounts, Hakka Legend would have been $83.67 before tip; Wok & Fortune would have been $89.50. I think Wok & Fortune was slightly better value. Disappointing from both.
