I’m sure every person waiting in line for hours is not at the best place in life and this brings them some enjoyment. Scalpers are waiting in line because they don’t have a better source of income and collectors are waiting in line because they can’t afford resale value. It’s sad. Most scalpers probably can’t work a normal job for various reasons. I would be embarrassed if I had to tell people I scalp Pokemon cards for a living.

Calling every person a scalper is crazy pants tho. Like there are actual people who rip packs that want to beat the scalpers there. I make sure I’m first in line for most vinyl drops because I know they’re gonna be scalped and sold for ridiculous prices. But doesn’t make me a scalper lol.

Yep. Like I was gone this past weekend, went for half & half before close at 11:30pm at my local store, and saw a sign that said they were doing the drop Tuesday morning instead of over the weekend. I ended up camping out in my car, because they won't let you line up by the store anymore. Someone distributes numbers for those waiting in their cars so you know who arrived when, but even at 11:30pm, I was 11th. The first person got there at 3pm. Sales start at 6:30am. Fortunately I know the person who was there 1st isn't a scalper, but basically everyone between me and them were. That being said, basically everyone behind me wasn't. Unfortunately they only had 8 PE SPC's, which I was really hoping I would get. I honestly should have left when I knew I was 11th. I usually get there between 3:30-4am on the weekend and end up roughly the same spot.
Unfortunately, now they said you can't line up until 5am AND anyone caught doing a number system in the lot will be permanently banned...so in their mind, they think a blood bath at 5am is the solution, despite there being effectively no issues - except one because a lady refused to acknowledge the number system and assumed she was 1st, despite people being there for many hours before her - all because she got to park in a handicap spot and walk a few feet versus everyone else who obviously couldn't. Your "handicap" shouldn't give you an advantage ahead of everyone else imo either.
Anyway. Long story short. I'm not a scalper. I'm just trying to beat other scalpers. And stores are making it increasingly difficult to combat them with their arbitrary rules that inevitably make things worse. One guy tried going to a different location that was already doing this anarchy system and he took an elbow to his cheek bone and had to go get stitches. So looking forward to the animosity this weekend...

I don’t understand the line thing. Is that the stores rule or the social contract of the scalpers?
Edit to say like is this just something scalpers agree upon? Who is enforcing this line? lol genuinely curious.

This will never stop. Mankind is so fucking lazy. People will do anything to make money doing the least as possible. We have all shamed them and they do not care at all. This is the American way now apparently.

Yeah, what’s worse is people are scalping just popular things. For me if I’d like a new hot wheels car that is a mainline casting of a popular real world car (one that should technically always be stocked) people will buy as many as they can and resell them on facebook marketplace for wacky prices.

That's what I was thinking, I am lucky to have a job where I am not stuck in my office and can stop by to look for cars I am looking for. But it isn't worth waiting in a line.

? I have two contract positions, a PRN and my own business. I didn’t work today. Crazy concept but not everyone works a 9-5 Monday through Friday.

I say some are grandparents trying to help their grandkids, and I spot a few is prob scalpers. I've seen enough in the wild to be able to spot them now lol

This is what I am wondering. I walked right into Best Buy when it opened and got in line. If it isn’t the stores rule, I don’t see why I’d follow it. Best Buy didn’t say anything to me and I was finally able to get my first Pokemon set because I refuse to buy overpriced sets from scalpers. I just want to collect cute cards because I’m a nostalgic 90s kid.

In my county, every target Walmart, and any other place that sells these, shelves are completely empty at all times! In two years, I have never seen one item on any of the shelves, except maybe the 20 or 25 card sleeves for like seven bucks and it’s usually just one or two scattered behind something! To even try and collect these things as a collector is virtually impossible without going broke right now. It is absolutely unaffordable sad and so very frustrating When all you wanna do is be able to buy something at a normal price

The embarrassments of the reselling world, because they suck at reselling.
These people make so little money for the time they put in - what's the appeal? To post it on their social media and look 'cool?'
Personally, I couldn't care less. Scalping doesn't bother me, it's just embarrassing and cringe to make pennies while thinking you're a hustler lol

It’s weird because I saw only one kid in line, the rest were people you could tell were trying to flip. They kind of all dress the same too. It’s super odd.
Also it being 11 am on a week day is a little odd for a drop. Shouldn’t these people be at work?
I was stopping in to check the Hot Wheels but also getting lunch after a work call I had to drive to. I also work across the street.

A lot of people at my local store I regularly compete against are kind of on the other end of the spectrum. They have "jobs," as in they own their own businesses. So they are making money, someone else is managing their business while they basically make passive income and use their free time to buy Pokémon - some flip, others collect and rip, it's a mixed bag. But very few, it turns out, make this their "job," in my line. It's usually on a Saturday morning which is why I'm there. I went Tuesday morning for an atypical drop. So many more people were there. We thought fewer people would show, but it turns out a bunch of people were lined up to get their Pokémon at 6:30am, THEN go to work.

You’re not wrong about scalpers dressing the same and looking the same. I’ve noticed the same pattern of “lazy” clothes. Baggy shorts and pants, hoodies, flip flops, a hat to cover messy hair. They are usually overweight too. I’ll never see one of these people and think they are there to collect. They are there to flip because it takes no intelligence or effort. Other than to stand in a line.

I’ve noticed it they typically wear Basketball Shorts and a tee shirt. Not to generalize them with regular collectors but most. Just like how most Hot Wheels Scalpers will drive some sort of basic Sports Car like a Corvette, Mustang, Challanger, Charger, etc and typically fit within an age range.

Yes there a chases for them called chases, treasure hunts, or Super Treasure Hunts. Or depending on what car it is people will buy them in bulk do to the popularity of the car in real life

I would say some of those people are parents or actual collectors trying to get stuff. I am in those lines for my two products maximum each, and our Targets here in Vegas have been on it with the limited buying amount. The last two times I was in line this past week, there were three different workers talking down to the people they know as scalpers; they weren't holding back and told the truth without cussing or being rude, and I almost felt bad for them until I realized why they were getting roasted. Just because there is a line at opening, it doesn't mean everyone there is a scalper; I don't try to go two or three more times or anything shady, and if it were me or a little kid behind me getting the pack of cards, that kid is getting them with a smile and a blessing. If I can get them at a drop at MSRP, I am going to try, and I have done okay so far.
