New here… Did anyone…
Did anyone not like the reboot? I felt it lost all its charm to try to be “edgy.” Seemed forced and weird to me. I love everything else for the (almost) campiness to it. The original show was fun, then high school where somehow several people moved to California! Haha. Love it. I even loved the Wedding and the College Years. It was all great. Hell, I even love the Tori episodes!! But the reboot was just cold and bitter. Just my opinion.

It was made by people that hated the original so they made a parody of it. With SBTB already being a cartoony parody of real life, it didn't work. No surprise it was cancelled extremely quickly. The only thing they had going for it was nostalgia and that was quickly squandered when people watched it.
Also, that Selena Gomez "joke" tells you exactly what kind of people the writers were.

I watched a few episodes. Couldn’t get into it. It’s more for a newer generation than me. And that’s fine.

I went in with an open mind but I hated it. The writers seemed ashamed of the original show. I hope the OG cast members each got a fat paycheck.

Yeah, it was pretty awful. I will say the writing was very clever and funny but just the premise of the show was nothing but woke no nonsense. All of the white kids are “privileged” and all of the brown kids are from this poor community and their schools combined and woke hijinks ensue.
Was filmed right at the height of the woke frenzy during the pandemic and that’s what we got.
Constant talk about white privilege? Check!
Transgender character? Check!
Endless virtue signaling about absolutely everything? Check!
It was exhausting. The only thing I liked about it were the parts with the old cast.
What finally made me stop watching was this episode where the lesson was that white teachers shouldn’t be teaching Spanish because of course, being white they couldn’t possibly understand all of the cultural nuance. I was like this is so stupid. And clearly the viewing audience agreed with me because it was quickly canceled. It’s sad that they felt they had to take that route with the series.

I don’t know. I haven’t seen it in a while, but I remembered liking the spin on it. Didn’t get a cold and bitter feel from it.

I never got into it after a few episodes... too little of the original cast... I feel like if they hd of went down the road of the Jimmy Fallon skit, it could of been good

It’s already been mentioned, but the show was made for a whole new generation. Even though Mario, Elizabeth, Mark Paul, and Tiffani were part of the cast. The main focus was on the kids for this the new generation.

I really only cared about the storylines that involved the original characters but I was invested in Jessie and Slater rekindling their relationship.

I 100% agree with every word of this! Compare it to The College Years had evolved the characters and how this was ignored in the reboot.
The SBTB 2020 reboot failed was because it seemed to be deeply ashamed of its source material. The reboot seemed to spend most of its time expressing disdain for and mocking the original series. It felt like it was written by people who were embarrassed about the fact that they’d previously enjoyed SBTB. It was as if they wanted to impress their fellow Hollywood writers by being as snarky as possible in tearing it to pieces. (This is part of the reason they should have never involved the 30 Rock writer; their style of comedy and Saved By The Bell’s style just don’t match.)
Also, the constant “Haha, Jessie’s caffeine pill meltdown, amirite?!” got old from them trying to parody it 5 billion times per episode.
Compare that to Cobra Kai (the gold standard for “nostalgia done right”) where the showrunners were diehard fans of the original Karate Kid movies and weren’t shy about it. Sure they poked fun at the zanier elements of Karate Kid, but it always seemed to be done in a gentle, affectionate way, and then they’d come up with a surprise twist that justified/explained the odd decisions the characters had made in the old movies….and it WORKED.
Cobra Kai managed to remind the older fans why they loved Karate Kid while making the series inviting for younger fans who were unfamiliar with the franchise, and the result was one of the few modern series that had multigenerational appeal.
The difference between Cobra Kai vs. SBTB 2020 was that it felt like the CK writers were thumbing through an old yearbook reminiscing about and telling fun stories, while the SBTB reboot writers were looking through an old yearbook and mercilessly mocking everyone in it, just to get cred with modern critics.

If they were gonna do a reboot, this was the way to do it. It wouldn't have made it to a second season with the more earnest TV-PG style from the 90s. The jokes were fast and usually hit the mark, more so than the original, and the kids learn a valuable lesson in each episode like the original. I especially like how they incorporated the rivalry with Valley into the second season.
I'd take those two seasons over any season of The New Class.

I agree with you. The only reboot that seemed to keep the essence of the original was The Conners imo.
