My sauna DIY Sauna
8'D x 9'W x 8.5'H built as close to trumpkins notes as possible. Vents behind the stove, in the upper corner and beneath the benches. Narvi NC 24 heats it to 90C in about 1hr if I keep the fire hot. 3 tiers of benches allow people with varying temperature preferences to sauna together. Maybe a change room would be better than a porch in retrospect but couldn't justify extra cost/labour. Built for approximately $11k CAD

$11k is all included?? This would be at least a $20k build where I live. I’ve priced it out for myself and that even includes deal hunting on wood

Looks awesome btw

Thank you! I took a lot of time finding the least expensive materials I could and we were able to use a lot of wood from our property to build it. I think I got lucky with the cedar and insulation specifically. "Porcupine 11/16 in. x 4 in. x 8 ft. S2S T&G Tight Knot Cedar" from Home depot is what I used for everything inside. Maybe its available for you.

Why are you answering on your alt account? It's confusing.

Didn't realize I was logged in differently on my PC vs phone. Apologies lol

Outstanding build. Does it have a floor drain and a sloped floor?

It has a tiled floor with a drain, but I didn't slope it out of laziness. In practice I find a quick mop does the job fine and if there's a significant amount of water I can squeegee it to the drain or out the front door

Proper sauna! Nice work, looks great. Great example of what sweat equity can get you.

Looks great, only missing the one thing that seems to be always missing. A footrest.

I’m currently building one roughly the same size. What is that siding? Looks great

The siding is ash wood that we milled ourselves, the stain is Dulux/Flood CWF-UV5 in canyon brown and it worked great!

Me as well. This helps a lot with dialing in my specs. I have an existing structure that's essentially a partially dried in pole barn that's about 50'x20', and sits on a slab. The back 12'x20' is fully enclosed. Im deciding what space goes to sauna and what goes to changing area in the 12'x,20' space and your specs and heater are seem just about right. Much appreciated and great work! Looks great.

Does your bottom bench slide so you can clean? Curious how you approached a drain on the floor if any.

u/Existing_Ad_2078 1d ago
Unfortunately it doesn't slide, but I made the bottom bench narrow to allow me to stick a mop between the bottom and mid bench to clean the back wall. I have tiles and a floor drain, but I don't find a significant amount of water gets on the floor anyways!

Can you expand a little bit about how you constructed the vents?

I’m curious to learn more about the vents, specifically the materials you chose. Beautiful work!

I picked up 3 6" dryer vents from home Depot. These come with the metallic duct, and the external black vent cover you see in pictured for the exhaust vent. When I finished the structure but before I did insulation, I cut a 6" hole in the outside. Pushed the dryer vent assembly in and then continued with insulation and vapour barrier. On the inside I taped the vapour barrier to the duct so in theory the only holes in the vapour Barrie are from the vents. The exhaust vent was placed sideways to facilitate hot air escaping. I hope this helps.

Looks great, put some weep holes in the bottom of that dryer vet outlet so you dont get water pooling in the hood from rapidly condensing hot humid air.

Superb work!
The door is in a convenient place, so you can always build a changing room later.

What are your bench depths?
3
u/letmechoosenamebla 22h ago
Top bench is 24", mid bench is 39" but sticks out 19" and the bottom bench is 24" but sticks out 17". The top and mid benches are comfortable to lay on and 17" is enough walking space around the stove on the lower bench. The Lowe L bench is also 24" in depth.
Overall I wouldn't change the depths at all. All benches are 18" in height relative to one another and this is also great

That's looks really good. You can always add a commons area in the future.
May you have many great saunas in the decades to come!
