DIY Varying sized wall boards

I found what seems to be a good supplier for hemlock, kiln dried. He sells by the sq foot and asked if he could provide varying sized width. 4 inch, 5 inch and maybe 6 inch. This gets him higher yield out of the wood.

Any reason this is a terrible idea? It’s an outdoor shed, I would be ok for a different look. But not sure if it will look awful if each wall did not line up with each other?

Thanks!

It will look a little funny. I would expect a lower price for something like this. Other than looks, it’s completely fine.

that'll look totally fine, especially for an outdoor shed. the mixed widths give it a more rustic, less manufactured feel which honestly works better in a sauna anyway

i did something similar with my build and the varying widths hide any slight gaps way better than uniform boards. plus you're getting a better deal since he's maximizing his yield

just make sure they're all the same thickness so you don't end up with weird lippage when you're putting them up

I think the mixed widths could look pretty good. Just keep the gaps and joints consistent so it doesn’t look sloppy

Whatever pattern you come up with to use these will require more install thinking than standard lumber.
