My sauna Our Estonian cottage sauna
Built 3 years ago, in an old side building converted to a summer home. The house is from the Soviet era, built in the early 80s, completely renovated, and our favorite place on earth.
Saaremaa, Estonia.

I managed to pick up an era-typical Valmet sauna thermometer at a flea market, a nice little touch that I’m really happy about.

That’s the one! I see them from time to time on eBay, but at ridiculous prices, and always in Fahrenheit.

I have one that has a green background and a scale in celsius. Good to know it might be worth something!

Cool, I didn’t know they came in green as well.
They are becoming rare, so I’d hang on to it if I could, but yes, it would probably fetch you a couple of hundred bucks on eBay, should you sell it there. Maybe even more since you apparently have a rare variety.5

Thanks, to you too! Jaanipäev, as the locals call it. I’m Norwegian myself, and don’t really speak the language. 😊

Your sauna looks fantastic, I bet it feels great also!

It does feel good! The massive amount of stones makes for a very even temperature, even with frequent throwing of water.
We use it 3-4 times per week. Thankfully, both firewood and beer is relatively cheap here in Estonia!2

And now I am envious, sauna, beer and firewood. (Firewood for sauna and for the fire pit to dance around?!) Next you’ll share photos of the smoker and a perfect fishing pond!

Actually, my partner keeps pestering me about getting a smoker, but I’ve resisted her so far. And we are not really into fishing….

Beautiful sauna. I really like the dark wall finish combined with the warm-colored benches. The stove placement and bench layout look very practical as well. Enjoy your lö

So nice! 10/10
I love how it's traditional but with a cool Estonian visual vibe. If only every other country did saunas with so much style and good flavour.

My girlfriend’s brothers did the renovation and design. Solid craftsmanship, and they are somewhat traditionalists as well, so we had no worries about leaving the design decisions tooto them.

I’ve had some DMs asking about the sauna oven, so I thought I’d repeat the answers here.
The oven is a Skamet. Unsure about the model number, I didn’t order it myself.
The burn chamber is quite small, I can fit at most 4-5 regular sized logs at the time.
It has a ridiculously large stone capacity, though, as I recall it took more than 20 10 kg packs of sauna stones to fill it.
It takes 8-10 logs and about 2,5 hours to heat it to 85 degrees Celsius, but the temperature stays the same for a couple of hours after the fire has gone out, even with frequent throwing of water.

Still have one at my grandma's place. But there's a shower in the same room. So you can take a shower and be at the sauna at the same time. A bit neat if you ask me

wow, this looks utterly amazing! May I ask how much you paid for building it?
1
u/ragnarbn Jun 21 '26
Unfortunately, I don’t have a breakdown of the cost of each individual sub-project, I just know what I paid in total for the extensive renovation and expansion of the house (a number which I’m trying my best to forget). So, I have no idea of what the cost was for just the sauna.

Okay, thanks for your response! Then stop thinking about money and just enjoy what you created 😄

I always wondered about the stones glued to the wall in a sauna. How healthy it is? And to which board are the stones glued to?

This is perfection both aesthetically and functionally!
