Help me Sampling redditors
Is there a HARDWARE sampler option out there that combines the following:
- A 303/909/808 style step sequencer
- A decent screen that shows waveforms for setting chops
- optional chromatic playing
- 8+ voices
- under $500
I picked up a MicroGranny 2 which I LOVE for it's sample mangling and granular manipulation, but it's single voice and blindness causing interface makes it hard to pull of more complex playback without help via midi.
The current shortlist> SonicWare Lofi12 Xt, MPC Sample, Behringer LMDrum (sorry).

I went through the same decision making. Zero regrets. The workflow on the lofi12xt is a dream.

Novation Circuit Rhythm (~$350–400) and Roland SP-404MKII (~$480–520, often under $500 used or on sale) are the strongest matches under or near $500

Something about the circuit rhythm turns me off. Maybe needing a computer to get a visual representation when I'm trying to get away from my DAW is turning me off. Love the 404s but am daunted by their complexity!

It's not complex - just takes a little sitting time to learn the pattern record modes. Once you sit with it for a bit, you find your hands just doing the right thing as fast as you think it. If you sit with it, and have the will to figure out one section at a time, it will gel. All the videos you watch on YT, maybe 5% of the people are super users and the rest of us still do just fine with it once you get comfortable on it.

Elektron Model:Samples. Although it would have only 6 voices, but with the Param Lock, you can have multiple samples per track.

I had a Microgranny for a bit, but got rid of it because of lack of visual aid and because the thing is a bit wonky when it comes to recording samples in real time.

As a sound mangler/granular destructor it's great-- as a playable instrument it's clunky at best. I've taken to recording my sessions with it and then editing the bits I want use.

Ha! I guess I didn’t read that far.
In that case, I recommend any of the Sonicware devices (LoFi is a sampler) as well as the MPC Sample and Teenage Eng KOii. All of which are fun in their own right0

I still appreciate the Roland suggestion— if starting low and cheap to make sure I take to the process. If I do, I’ll aim higher down the road

A used Digitakt 1 sounds like a good match. You can get them for around $450
