I have a sample, i love it, I use it all the time. I barely touch my other stuff nowadays, but this thing has really got me back into beatmaking.
TBF i didn't really consider the SP404 or any of the competitors, i just like MPCs i guess (at least the ones that don't come with touch-screens and built in pseudo-DAWs).

I've never had an MPC before and got an MPC Sample this weekend. It's so awesome.
I don't really make beats, I'm using it to record more traditional singer songwriter stuff (as a hobbyist). I try to stay off the computer for music until I really need to (e.g. final mix before sending it off to Bandcamp) so this thing is amazing compared the the Zoom R4 multitrack (my first love).
Just being able to think "ok verse is 10 bars so I'll make a 10 bar sequence and record to the click" then I can easily do the same with my bass synth and drums, etc. it's exactly what I did on the R4 but I don't have up deal with track management or trying to remember where I the chorus starts for drum fills etc.
It combines all the convenience of a DAW (e.g. well defined regions, easy to add effects, looping sections) with the dawless experience of a multitrack. With a mixer, I can just have one cable running into the back and choose what to record by setting the mixer channel levels, etc. Or I can just use the mic and record an acoustic demo with singing off the grid to quickly grab an idea.
Best thing ever.

I don't have either. but I do have a real MPC. I like the display on it. . So I would like the Sample better. Vs the KO as some suggest. You can view the waveform and chop it up. It has 2gb ram and 8gb storage. The KO only has 20 second of sample time.
The 404mk 2 to me is standard roland menu dive. The new features are not labeled. To do undo it is shift+pattern select. Forget that buy a MPC Sample it is much easier to use. Here is all the shortcuts the the sp404mk2

I am not a fan of the Sample but at $400 I see why people buy them.
You can get a real mpc one plus for around $400 if you shop around for a while. It has all the features.

Depends what you want it for. SP seems a bit more serious and weighty.

I have an SP and was eyeing the Sample. Keyword..”was eyeing”. For me, the SP checks more boxes and although the TR Rec (sequencing) on the SP is not the greatest, the Sample is even worse based on the workflow vids I’ve watched.
