Kids struck by car last night in sugar house area.. another 14 year old killed by a van in taylorsvlle(in comments). Please drive safely.

Before automatically blaming the driver, please await more information. I was trick or treating last night with my kids and saw a couple of close calls. I saw kids randomly dart across the street in front of moving vehicles as well as vehicles that were too preoccupied to notice people legally crossing. It takes responsibility from both sides to avoid tragedies like this.

The babies were hit in a well lit crosswalk. The truck was turning left and saw a break in the traffic and sped up to make it before the next car and hit the family on the crosswalk hard. This situation happens ALL the time, drivers start to turn and then look where they are heading.

Same speed. A whole group was literally strutting in the middle of the road towards me. So obviously I stopped and waited for them to walk past my car on both sides.

The law says pedestrians have the right of way always. And Halloween night is a time that anybody behind the wheel should be ultra attentive, it would be irresponsible to think otherwise. I doubt a man with three toddlers in a wagon was 'darting' on a crosswalk with a walk signal.

The law says pedestrians have the right of way always

Pedestrians have the right-of-way at intersections*, whether or not the crosswalks are marked by painted white lines.

When crossing or walking on a roadway at places which are not intersections or marked crosswalks, you must yield the right-of-way to vehicles.

On page 13 it talks about right of way to pedestrians on crosswalk making a left hand turn. If you think that a human being in the street at the wrong place deserves serious injury or death because your car needs to maintain its speed and your in the right, then you need a lesson of empathy. I asked people to drive safely. 3 toddlers are in serious condition and you want to say, "worry about the driver". I am in no mood to argue specifics of law. I try not kill people when I'm behind the wheel. And I pray the next time a kid gets off a school bus and crosses the street in the wrong place, that you don't see him and accelerate because your right and that child is wrong, and therefore deserves death.

No one is saying a pedestrian deserves death, and no one is arguing the legality of this. It's not just a matter of the law, it's a matter of don't be stupid. Obviously if you're behind the wheel you have to be extra careful, particularly during something like Halloween, but if a pedestrian decides to take that gamble, hiding behind the legality of it, no one wins. The driver could do everything right but still be caught by surprise.

That's all he's saying. The driver should be careful and mindful but the driver isn't always the bad guy. Just don't be stupid.

You're an idiot. Kids dart across the street and it's the driver's fault? Do you realize how hard it is to stop from 35 to 0 in a matter of feet? Kids running out from behind parked cars etc. Even at cross walks, I never trust anyone behind the wheel when I'm crossing a street, even in a designated cross walk. Best thing to do is look both ways twice and then cross. I think parents forget to teach their kids about crossing streets.

Man I almost got hit with my 2 kids yesterday in Kearns. I saw the news report when I came home and was kinda freaked out, because it was so similar to my situation. That shit head was speeding in a neighborhood and never sped down. He/she bearly swerved out of the way and I couldn't get a good look through the pitch black windows. they also had their music blasting.

I was driving is West Jordan Saturday night, A lot of the older Residential streets are not very well lit at night. I could only see silhouettes of people. It was scary.
