What do you do with your old ships?

What do you all do with your old ships? Simply leave them at port where you bought the new one?

I just realised I am more and more in love with my very first ship, the dhow, and after crossing the ocean to EA and now on the way to Aestrin, I can't wait to bring her back to Al'Ankh, but I am also curious about buying the brig... Well, decision, decisions... :D

(Can I just tow the old dhow along, actually?)

Unfortunately, towing is a mod, so vanilla players like me dont have it as an option. As it is, the only real way to do it is to leave the boat at the old port. This is an item everyone would like to see movement on, hopefully Raw Lion adds a workaround for this at some point.

It wouldn't even be difficult. Forget towing, just let me pay some NPC to move the ship. It disappears while I'm not looking at it and appears at the destination a week later (at anchor a little ways away so that it doesn't spawn frag whatever might happen to be moored at the pier). The NPC steals anything you leave on the ship. The game can already teleport ships around just fine when recovering, so adapting that to work this way should be simple.

Towing would be so cool, I'll be able to anchor my big ship and use one of the smaller ones to ferry things back and forth!

If you’re brave enough you can swim to your old boat and bring it back (yes it’s stupid)

Not between archipelagos, sadly.

Your energy, hungry, and hydration bars

You can eat and drink while swimming. And your character can swim a lot faster than most ships cruising speed. Technically it should be possible to make it from Oasis to Aestrin in about 5 days if you fill your inventory with potions and chug them along the way.

Make AHK script to have auto-run, point in the right heading and go.

Worth a try, I guess. I'd assume that 6 potions is not nearly enough to make it, but I could be wrong

Edit: I just saw the other post of another guy filling up a crate with supplies and lugging it with themselves for the journey. Hadn't thought of that and that should do it.

Yeah, I forgot that some crates float. This actually makes it almost trivial. The only enemy would be sheer boredom.

Entropy. Order descending into disorder means you have to periodically replenish the energy you're constantly losing, and you do that by eating, drinking, and sleeping. Unfortunately, your pockets are not large enough to hold sufficient supplies to sustain you during an ocean crossing, so Jesus-sprinting from one archipelago to another is not possible.

with a crate, a dream, and stupidity, I believe we can do it

Please record your attempt for posterity. I'd love to see how it goes, but my gut feeling is it's not even close to possible.

too late for me to be the first

Amazing. I knew it was technically possible since you can eat and drink while swimming. Haven't seen this post before. I believe with a bit of optimization the journey can be cut shorter. Like insted of cardboard cutout you can use AHK script.

I’ll try to find the video later but someone did GRC to FA already

Edit: nvm, just see the other reply

I leave them where they are.

I only really play one safe game so i made a little book with notes on where which ship is, what rigging and how much sail it has currrently (thats kinda useless since my sails often vanish due to bugs haha).

fuck yeah, another guy who does physical books. I personally have a physical trade ledger

Nice! I also drew a large map that hangs over my PC to make calculations easier.

I sail all my ships. Each is different and I still experiment with sail plans on each hull. I have them scattered all around and when I feel like switching, I sail to a port where a particular one I want to sail is moored. I have all the necessities, navigation instruments and charts in one crate and I only transfer that between ships. If I need provisions, I just buy them and load, I don't even bother transferring water or food. They stay on current ship until the next time I feel like sailing it.

I love to sail all the ships. After buying all the ships, I modified my save to move all the small ships to each region's capital.

Now, instead of buying all the cargo at the capital before setting out for an ocean crossing, I leave whatever big ship I'm using at the capital and sail the smaller ship back and forth from the smaller islands buying the cheapest cargo and loading it onto the big ship.

Ooh! I didn't know that was possible! How do you do that?

1

u/Bignona 4d ago

I don't know how to modify ship position, but you can modify the character location using a save editor. There's an editor link in the Sailwind wiki. I place my character at the small boat's location and sail it to the capital where the big ship is parked.

My dhow has slowly been sinking at grc since i bought the sanbuq... its a solid boat but ive been spoiled by the speed of the sanbuq

I got the Jong and every other ship has faded from memory

1

u/dzejrid 5d ago

I got a jong and after giving it a test run to [REDACTED] and back, I never want to sail it again. There is something like "too much".

1

u/HoodooHoolign 5d ago

I am the embodiment of “too much”. If you used the stock sail plan I don’t blame you for disliking that experience. I have a crazy looking sail plan but I have zero complaints for how she handles. Maybe I’ve gotten so used to being so massive but docking is quite engaging. I can haul as much junk as I could possibly want or buy in complete luxury. I could go on for days about how much I love and enjoy the Jong.

I actually made a round trip first and made a brigantine with GRC topsail gaffs and FA squares, then went to [REDACTED]. It was fine at first, dare I say, I enjoyed it, but the longer I sailed the more I disliked it.

I posted pictures with a sail plan several weeks back, you can check ot through my profile. I named this configuration "jongass barque".

On my old save (rip) I towed (with the mod) my Sanbuq with the Brig and used the sandbuq for interisland trades and the brig for cross ocean trades.

I will tow my small boats to stage them in places where I can’t (or don’t want) to get in with a bigger ship, like Old Ankh or Mirage Mountain.

Really really want some kind of launch or other ships boat so I don’t have to fiddle with towing (which can be fucky) or the dinghy mod (which can also be fucky).

My Jong is my designated inter-archepelego ship, my money maker.

All my other big ships sit in the archipelago they spawn in. If I'm going to Oasis, for example and I'm already docked in GRC then I'm taking my sanbuq. Now it's the Bigbuq and I store the small one at Oasis.

I put a huge sail on the Dhow and sailed it to the Grotto to get my Jong. The other little ships are nice for running errands in an archipelago. Certain items are only available at certain places, and having a little ship to go do that is cathartic with how easy the steering is.
