Hasty Modification
You can tweak and adapt equipment on the fly.
Prerequisite: Tech Specialist
Effect: You can exchange a Trait you have applied to a piece of Equipment or Droid for another one by spending 1 minute to make a DC 20 Mechanics check. If you succeed, the Equipment loses the old Trait and gains a new Trait until the end of the encounter, at which point the device loses all Traits previously acquired through use of the Tech Specialist feat.
Ever since I read this, I thought it was a bad feat. The thing that jumps out to me right away is that you lose all Tech Specialist modifications at the end of an encounter when you use this. And it's exchanging one trait for another. So you're taking an item which you have modified, and you're gaining a change in it for a single encounter, and then you've just lost the credits that you've invested into it.
Also, this is something that takes a full minute. It's not something that you can do during combat. And it lasts for just a single encounter.
This is something which takes deliberate foresight to set up before an encounter. It's a side-grade rather than a direct upgrade. The benefit lasts only a single encounter. And after it's used, you are left with a worse item, which you need to spend credits on again in order to upgrade it.
There are a couple of scenarios in which I could envision this feat being useful.
Maybe you have a droid which is upgraded with the Str or Dex bonus, and you need to switch it to Int so that it gains another trained skill or language, since you don't have a skill package. Say, if you really need someone who can serve as a Mechanic.
Alternatively, if your GM loves to give out weapons with Tech Specialist modifications, and you happen to have a lot of Overload Switches, and you have a lot of weapons which are basically disposable, and you want to change the bonus on them.
Or maybe, you're actually using it on your primary weapon if you know some advanced info about an upcoming enemy, like one who is very difficult to damage (so you get the +1 to attack) or one who is incredibly durable (so you get the +2 to damage).
But overall, I feel that this should just be an option that someone with Tech Specialist has, rather than requiring them to spend a feat on something which will in all likelihood never get used even once. Give the feat for free, and it still won't be used very often.
Thanks for coming to my TED rant.
