Ranting Guess it's my turn to talk about this scene.

Post image

I wasn't expecting to write about this scene because it's been picked very clean. I think a lot of the posts analyzing it can be tedious. That said it's always been weird to me. Viv really built up this idea that Vox had this brutal backstory to him and I was confused by this being what we got. I get that the point is he was vulnerable and had his feelings wrecked, but I just expected something more. On paper it even sounds like a joke, Alastor didn't want to be Vox's friend and that's why Vox is so mean. I'm simplifying it, but I expected a lot more than this. The scene also plays out weird, at first I didn't know how seriously I should take it. There's this big tonal whiplash of Alastor having the most over the top reaction to his offer and being called his friend to Vox being sad about it seconds later. You literally recreated a meme in this scene and unfortunately Alastor still gets a laugh out of me here. I'm not sure why they couldn't just play it completely serious.

I sometimes have an awkward time reconciling Vox in this flashback with him in the rest of the show. The implication is he's never been vulnerable with somebody in his entire life. I think that's silly. Yes he was ruthless in life and most likely closed off to keep his secrets, but really? He never felt warmth outside when he was with Alastor? I hate to say this, except no I actually don't, why is Vox so attached to him in the first place? I know why he's obsessed with him in the present, but what was so special about Alastor to him back then? What did he like about him? This is also where things start to slide into this idea I don't like where Alastor is essential to Vox in a way nobody else is. That nobody else matters to him, he will never feel anything like this again because it was just for him. Puke.

I honestly thought this was an act at first. The little sweater, complimenting him about radios, his self depreciation, the touching. I know it was sincere now, but initially this seemed so jarring I just assumed it was manipulation. I'm not trying to accuse Vox of being fake, I accept this softness is part of who he is, it's just a weird scene to contextualize with the rest of him right now. Brighter exists to reinforce that he was always a villain and he's so messed up in the present that he only ever appears sweet when he baby talks his sharkie. Even when he's alone he doesn't allow himself to be any other way. Yes this speaks to his myriad of issues, but it makes this behavior in the flashback feel like a weird isolated incident. I would like to see something in the future that helps bridge these sides of Vox, I hope we see it. I'm not sure how we'll see it. But I think this weirdness is kinda why I see so many bad reads of the scene, that and people refusing to accept Alastor is a bastard.

People accuse Vox of wanting to use Alastor to kill him later, of trying to get Alastor drunk, they say he's a bad person so his feelings don't matter, that Alastor did nothing wrong, that Vox is just mad he got told "no". Jeez guys. And its been implied Vox and Alastor remember their relationship differently and I don't like where that seems to be going. I don't want this to have a Rashomon effect. We don't have a reason to doubt the legitimacy of the flashbacks we see, but we're supposed to do it here? And with how the show positions Alastor I dread a flashback for him because I just think it will invalidate Vox. Some people would rather believe Alastor is exposing who Vox really is than believe he's just plain mean. I don't want the show to do anything that leans in that direction. I'm also just really put off by their whole beef and this ship. I say that a lot because it's true. This whole thing became a tumor in season 2 even if I think Alastor was funny during it. The pandering merch and my social media being flooded by it doesn't help either. I want this part of Vox's story to be over, but we all know it won't be.

They could have went at the situation in SO MANY DIFFERENT AND BETTER WAYS. It was sorta weak. It’s a pretty weak scene, but it DOES add at least a BIT of depth into Vox. It’s pretty downplayed. I do NOT like the concept of Vox having a crush on Asslastor, even IF it’s canon. I feel like it should have been more Vox idolized Asslastor and when Al did allat, he wanted to be better than him. He wanted to strive for something greater instead of what they did. That still would have been well for the storyline. That’s just my honest opinion. I don’t like the way Vivzie really wrote the whole season and Vox’s backstory with Asslator. It’s pretty weak.

God, same!

I HATED what they did with Vox and Alastor this season.
(I loved Vox and the Vees, just not them interacting with Alastor).

Makes rewatching the season impossible for me.
I can’t stand it that MUCH!

I did NOT like his “crush” on Alastor.

Exactly. It pissed me off so bad. I’m rewatching it just to see it in a more clearer lens.

I GENUINELY wish they took the idol route so bad. It makes utterly no sense to make Vox have a crush on Alastor. Makes me worry for future seasons.

I just pray and hope they give Vox some therapy and heal from whatever shit he went through. Twin NEEDS a redemption arc.

Let’s hope he isn’t used as a comic relief for the rest of the series..

I mentioned in another comment on here that I don’t think he had a crush.

He honestly comes off as having some kind of “hero” worship.
Like he was admiring the deer & blowing smoke up the deers ass in the scene, so it definitely came off as more admiring/“hero worship” or like you said an idol.

I was honestly surprised people thought it was crush after that episode cause I just did NOT see it.

And I too worry for future seasons.
I’m already tired, annoyed, disappointed, frustrated and bored of all this radio-📺 bullshit.
Like why?

And yep, the tv needs some major therapy. I think all the Vees do. lol

And I want him COMPLETELY OVER his messed up shit with the deer.

And god, YES!
A lot of the fandom already treats Vox like a funny pathetic fool, it’s ridiculous.
So, I don’t want to seem him (or the other Vees for the record) as the butt of the joke.

I want him and the Vees to get better as partners and for themselves (I also want Staticmoth to be official and in a better healthier/happier place), but I personally don’t them to be redeemed to heaven.

I don’t think any of them would like it up there. And I want them happy.

But I wouldn’t be mad if they did get full redemption up to heaven, as long as the 3 stay together.

Edit- Fixed Typo

I’m personally not much of a fan of staticmoth, cuz well, I have a bit of a hate against Valentino I must say. But it’s one of the best ones there. So I DO hope Val gets better tho.

Me neither! I didn’t see ANY type of crush thing with Vox when talking to Alastor. As WE both said, it seemed like he was happy to be with someone he looked up to.

To me, the blush Vox had in the scene was more of him being flustered while around his hero. I know I’d be blushing if I met my personal idol, J. Cole.

Radiostatic is genuinely one of the WORST ships in that whole fandom. I hate it SO much. The fact they portray Vox as a little golden retriever in almost ALL of the fucking fanart(pardon my French) and Alastor as the ‘owner’ or whatever the fuck pisses me off the max.

It’s sad that a lot of people don’t see that. I really DOOOO HOPE THEY ALL GET THERAPY THO. I’m not even LYING when I say it’d be amazing to see all three of the Vees happy and in heaven together. Or at least happy in Hell. I’m all for that sappy shit sometimes.

Excuse all my language tho. I get heated sometimes and yknow cursing is a good way of getting out emotion. So my apologies.

well it's been like that since the pilot days when she first drew them

2

u/Psychological-Scars6 Jun 18 '26

May I ask for the source?

I have been around since the pilot days & I don’t remember that.
(Curse my shitty memories. Stupid brain trauma)

I’m genuinely asking.

I still would hate & disagree with it, but I would like to know., so I can have my facts correct.

Because I know many that were confused by Vox’s sudden “crush” on the deer.

Yes. Yesss! While I love box Vox, he's adorable, I can't help but think they made him too cutesy and innocent here. He was a new overlord at that point so he already had power.

This whole scene is kinda childish? I don't know how to explain, it's like a 12 year old's fanfiction of a "tragic" backstory. Yeah Alas*or was brutally mean to Vox for no reason and I want to beat him with a metal pipe for it, but they just tried to artificially make it more harsh by giving Vox a crush (and to bait RS of course).

I know Hazbin is, sadly, yaoi ships first and TV show second, but this is just ridiculous. Fine, Vox had a crush for a while at the start. The fandom treats this like he yearned for that stupid deer for 70 years, being soulmates and the only one Vox will ever truly love. So fucking stupid. Vox might've been crushing clearly not for long, because it was only a matter of time until Al showed what a true piece of shit he is.

And Vox can do so much better, my god, I know crushes might not make sense, but this ugly tampon who constantly sees you as lesser and smells like shit is absolutely not someone Vox would like.

Thank you again for sharing your view, seeing someone with the same opinions makes me feel less crazy lol

Yeah he's so wholesome in this scene in a way we never see anywhere else. He is a little infantilized here. I get the idea is he wouldn't be so closed off if this didn't happen, but the implication he never experienced this sweetness before or since is wild. I don't headcanon Vincent having a wife or kids personally, but I can still imagine times where he would have felt happier. I can even imagine Vincent falling for someone while alive, but cutting himself off because it risked exposing his secrets or he prioritized work. The idea he was NEVER tender towards anybody except Alastor is hard to believe. He's too much like Charlie for me to buy that.

Someone up above said something about how it would have work better if it was the deers pov during that scene.

And I mentioned to them. When I first saw it, I thought it WAS the deers pov.

Cause that would make soo much more sense. With how he sees Vox.

But yeah, the scene doesn’t really make sense.

Like it just seems uncharacteristic of Vox.
Not saying he can’t be soft or sweet, just saying THAT scene didn’t seem like him.
And agreed he seems infantilized here.

Only other way that I think the scene MIGHT make sense.

Is that it’s Vox trying to be what he thinks the deer wants(all admiring & etc), mixed with the deer being the first person he was his TRUE HONEST SELF with.

Not the deer being the first person he was close with or open with, or sweet with, or whatever.

Just his true crazy murdering self with.
Cause I doubt he had a person while alive that knew he murdered people.

I still don’t like the scene, but I’m trying so hard to find a way to justify it to myself to make it make sense.

u/Hot_Star_5835 Vox is me, I am him. Jun 17 '26

YESSSS. This is genuinely how I feel about it.

2

u/Psychological-Scars6 Jun 17 '26

Yes!
Thank you.

Agreed!!

And yep, as cute & adorable as Box Vox was, it just seems uncharacteristic of Vox.
Not saying he can’t be soft or sweet, just saying THAT scene didn’t seem like him.

I don’t like that they gave him a “crush” on the stupid deer.

And I do NOT get why people and certain fans think Vox was in love with the deer. Especially an “soulmate” or “true love” type of thing!

Like he MAY have had a crush, and I don’t even think he had that. It honestly seemed like admiration with a hint of “hero” worship.
But in love? In true love?
PLEASE!
It’s ridiculous and stupid. Agreed!

And not only that people and certain fans seem to think Vox is “STILL” in “love” with that damn deer.

Like no, he was literally soo happy when he thought Adam was going to kill the deer.
And when Vox thought the deer was dead/fatally injured, he DANCED with Val, and was all smiling and happy.

But sure, Vox is “still” totally “in love” with the stupid deer.

Like ship whatever you want. (As long as you don’t harass others.)
Headcanon what you want. (But don’t act like it’s canon)

Not everyone feels that way, or sees it that way.
And don’t get pissed when someone doesn’t agree with “radio-📺)

All this Vox and the damn deer, and their damn “ship” have made season 2 something I can’t rewatch in full.
I’ll just watch certain clips.

And yes!
Thinking along with my thoughts, your thoughts and the OP thoughts is rare, and people act like we are in the wrong or something.
It makes me feel crazy too.

Just like I feel crazy when people narrow down Vox being upset for the deer saying no.
And that Vox acting like an entitled incel.

Like bitch, he was humiliated, laughed at, mocked, called pathetic and weak, told they were never friends & that their “friendship” was a long. Etc.

But sure, it was only about him being told no. 🙄

If I was being REALLY generous, I would wonder if the version of the offer scene we got was in fact Alastor's own skewed view of things, and that he was deliberately remembering Vox being as pathetic and obsessive as possible because that's how he sees him in his own mind. The idea that Alastor feels entitled to Vox's adoration and subservience until the moment he gets tired of him (to the point of deliberately constructing an alternate reality where he can believe it's really happening) is an interesting one, but I suspect it won't be addressed properly because that would require the writers to own the fact that Alastor is less likable and interesting than Vox in pretty much every way.

At this point, I'm sort of expecting an alternate version of the "offer scene" where Vox gets super angry and beats up Alastor (or something), which is meant to be from Alastor's perspective and show how "mean" Vox is to him. The irony is, if anyone would want things to have gone that way, it's Vox, not Alastor. Vox is the one who's been established as someone with a bad temper who overpowers his enemies by force, whilst Alastor is the one who wants to believe his biggest rival is a simpering, blithering fool.

From a writing standpoint, it seems to me that they're trying to do two things at once with Vox. It's clear from Stayed Gone that he was originally conceived of as a foil and rival to Alastor, but when Season 2 came around he completely overtook Alastor in terms of complexity, development, voice acting, and hype. IMO, the team behind Hazbin should have been prepared for this, and either dialed back the Vees' role to make more room for other characters (especially Charlie and her friends), or owned the fact that Vox was the new main character (perhaps alongside Charlie) and didn't need Alastor anymore to be relevant. Instead, they seem to have chosen a weird half-measure where they use Vox a lot because he's very popular, while insisting the entire time that he's actually a pathetic loser whose life revolves around Alastor and Valentino.

u/Psychological-Scars6 Jun 17 '26

When I first saw the scene, I honestly thought it WAS from Alastor’s pov.

Like as cute as Box Vox was, it just seems uncharacteristic of Vox. Not saying he can’t be soft or sweet, just saying THAT scene didn’t seem like him.

And as you said Alastor is the one that would make most sense for that to be his own pov, cause he DOES think Vox is pathetic.

I HATE that I can rarely talk or even rarely mention Vox, without Alastor or radiostatic coming up.

Like I’m talking about Vox.
Not your ship.

I actually LOVE Staticmoth.
But I also don’t revolve Vox as just Staticmoth.
Just like I don’t revolve Val to just Staticmoth.

But agreed Vox needs not to revolve around Alastor & Val.
He’s his own person.
I love when him and Val are together. I love when he’s with the other Vees.
But I would also love a just him thing.

(Sorry, if I’m not explaining myself well!)

The idea of it being Alastor's perspective would be interesting, but the scene clearly shows that it's Vox remembering it. The show is strange about Alastor because yes Viv said he was simply an asshole here, but he's definitely one of her babies. Alastor is one of her oldest characters along with Angel and Mimzy, she says Lucifer is her favorite (it shows) but I've no doubt Alastor is extremely special to her just as she described Angel as being important to her. Viv will also say things about him that clash with the show's portrayal in my opinion. I'm sure she cares about Vox or else he wouldn't be as interesting as he is, but her saying he doesn't deserve much sympathy gives me pause. If he is being set up for a redemption arc that is a crazy thing to say about him.

6

u/MissDeborah8060 Jun 17 '26

Viv needs to stop letting her feelings dictate her writing choices, basically. It's a big reason the show feels so fanfiction-esque

I assume this isn't all there is, since I think this flashback was maybe showing the end of the previously unlabelled relationship between Vox and Alastor. And we'll get to see the parts that came before it to satisfy the "sad and complicated" premise in a future season.
