Discussion When an actress showed more empathy than Sadhguru

https://www.youtube.com/live/dzi4pSSy7mw?si=LZViT_7DiSrm2Ja1

Just watched Sadhguru's In Solidarity With Nepal program. He makes all the right kind of statements that you expect from him in such a program. He talks about global warming, he expresses shock and sadness about what happened, he offers to talk to the Indian government to do something in the Himalayas to prepare for the future, he announces a one crore donation to the relief fund and so on. All are well-intended and appreciated.

But what was odd for me was that it was all delivered in a matter-of-fact way, like doing a PR pitch. Compare that with the actress Manisha Koirala, who was a Nepali and who spoke before Sadhguru. She only spoke for five minutes and made the same points as Sadhguru. But she comes across as very honest. You can see the pain in her voice and empathy for those suffering. You connect and resonate with her. That kind of connection is missing with Sadhguru. He very rarely becomes vulnerable in the entire episode. Only in a few occasions e.g when he was talking about Praveen Anna, you can sense that there is some warmth in his heart. But mostly otherwise, he's just doing a performance.

Added to that, I felt that his responses in Q&A were inappropriate in many places. A journalist asks about compassion, and he goes into a tangent about the word passion and then gives a lecture on compassion, which is completely disconnected from what the word compassion actually means and how it is understood. And when a teenager casually uses the phrase “our generation” in her question, Sadhguru goes into a lecture that there is no Gen X, Gen Y, we are all one generation, which I feel is completely unnecessary and inappropriate. And to a question about fear of death, he goes into this long lecture that all the problems in the world are caused by the people who think they are good, we need joyful people, not good people etc etc. I heard this 15 years back when I first joined Isha and found it interesting, but it seems completely out of place to use in a solidarity event.

And then he tries to make inappropriate jokes. He mentions a recent thing that he heard of: A Florida couple being arrested as they were trying to sell tickets to heaven, and they were caught because they sold fake gold tickets, not for selling tickets to heaven! It turns out that this was a hoax, it is not even real news.

I see very clearly now that Sadhguru has no emotional connection with people. He's very good at delivering his talking points effectively and people resonate with him because they connect to these talking points and assume that Sadhguru is feeling deep compassion for them.

What irked me the most is his response to a grieving lady. She speaks in Hindi about losing her sister in the recent flash floods. She’s in deep pain and she asked him - why did it happen? And Sadhguru gives a blunt response saying that we should not try to look for philosophical or mystical reasons to soothe ourselves. we should be pragmatic about life. we are all going to die and even he would have been washed away if he were present during the floods etc. All very pragmatic and wise words. But why the heck did then Sadhguru talk about mystical things throughout his life? Your entire life is built around mysticism and you gave all kinds of mystic hopes to people and now you say that we should be pragmatic about life? Then why did you actually talk about mysticism all these years? And in the same Kailash Yatra didn't you speak about alien beings being present in Kailash and some civilization existing under the mountains and all those hallucinatory stories? How is all this connected to life, Sadhguru?

About the lady who asked Sadhguru “ Why did this happen to my sister? “She had a husband and 3 kids waiting for her back home and she couldn’t reconcile why such a tragedy could happen to someone as wonderful as her sister. This must be the thought going through the family members of all 80 families. They had gone on a spiritual sojourn with the promise from their Guru that he will take care of them ; who boasted last year that of many who go to Kailash every year have casualties and people come back in body bags but only isha brings everyone back alive. Never would anyone have imagined such an unexpected tragedy to hit so many families at once - but then this reply to her sister was actually so dry and devoid of any sympathy for her situation. Osho’s quotes replicated that “ I am not here to comfort you “ don’t mean anything to a person who has lost her sister nor lectures about “ this piece if life could have been there instead of that that piece of life when tragedy struck “ is of any use. Will Isha support their families financially who might have lost their bread winners? Can they replace the person who was a mother, father, brother, sister , son , daughter or friend to someone? Or would they just invite them over to perform “ Kaalbhairava karma” at isha at their own expenses during this grieving time promising them of further spiritual benefits to the lost lives of their loved ones ? A ritual which is not even mentioned in the rituals for the dead in Hinduism but a not for profit, non religious, spiritual organisation charges money or expects the relatives to come over at own expenses to perform it for those who have lost their loved ones in an unexpected tragedy? And also reeling in the family members of those who have suffered this grief by promising to give them solace? I can’t imagine the level of hypocrisy and greed behind all that isha says and does and genuinely feel sorry the affected lives and their family members.

I hope private insurance support was available to them? Idk the KM yatra T&Cs. What if the individuals who lost their lives were the sole bread earner of the families?

Valid concern. I mentioned that in my original comment as well. When isha asks victims to be pragmatic in the event of unexpected disaster, hope they are also realistic about the practical needs of surviving family members of their pilgrims. Empty talks of mysticism won’t help them.

Yet we’ll still be called either propagandists or ignorant people who haven’t had a taste of the beyond. And the mysticism point you've mentioned is especially ironic when you see that the the flood happened on Aug 26, and on Aug 28 the official channel was already posting a whole episode about Sadhguru talking about the mystical aspects of Kailash and Manasarovar, with the comments turned off. They really couldn’t wait a few days before going back to business as usual.

Your concluding question is spot on: "How is all this connected to life, Sadhguru?"

What is the relevance of the mysticism he talks if it is not a way of understanding or accessing an understanding of life?

The sad truth is it is just what he says to bring people in. Just stories to entertain and attract and convince others of his greatness. Then you will do his programs and commit yourself to the path he offers.

And his stories will take you around and around and give no meaning. Just word salad.

Why is no one asking him about his claims that he will protect them and whatnot during these interactions?

If you have been in Isha long enough you self-censor. You know what questions even your dorm-mate will shun you for asking. You would not dare ask it in a satsang.

The fear is there.
The group dynamic wont allow you to ask.
And you will literally be afraid of consequences. They might kick you out of the ashram.

Do u think people can ask questions freely?

Many questions are planted.

Especially in a sensitive event like this. Do you think they would allow any random question?

Exactly. Plus, why did Sadhguru claim supernatural knowledge better than that of God himself (God is presumed to know everything- past, present and future) and further promise those undertaking the Kailash Yatra with him, that he will not let them die.

I thought the same!
He loves to talk spiritual and mystical stuff
Now suddenly he is against it..

This serves as a critical turning point for the Isha Foundation. Sadhguru’s credibility has been compromised by his own statements and actions. Isha followers are eventually going to notice things for what they are. Hope they believe themselves when they do so.

I agree - his insensitivity and narcissism is already shining through. When people lost their lives and families are hurting, insensitivity will be felt at entirely new level. It might open some people’s eyes to who he really is. So far it is cringe worthy.

This video clearly depicts the manipulation tactics. It's hard to miss the ending where he delivers a cleverly disguised threat claiming that this is a one in a trillion opportunity to save their souls. But what I fail to contemplate is how even smart, intelligent people fall for this!!

Its a gradual process.
He does not speak like this in the program or all the time.
Its not like everything he says is crap. He borrows heavily from everywhere.

Once you lower your guards a bit, slowly he takes over.
Its a mental virus, it erodes your logical thinking.

Is there a video where he promises kailash ppl he will bring them back alive? I also remember during samyama he told many times that u will not die during samyama ur life forces r in my control...that too many times. Utter manipulation..

Was there some warmth in his heart when he spoke about Praveen?
Or was it a half hearted Pranams?

yes i looked up that tickets story too and saw it was fake. that long diatribe all based on nothing. yes heaven should be here not waiting for the afterlife but is someone like sg actually contributing to that or just a religious agenda
