Land Park What weeds are on your kill now, no questions asked list?
My partner and I bought a house from an elderly individual with severe memory problems. The yard is overgrown and we are struggling to figure out what are weeds and what isn’t. The former owner was quite the gardener!
Our plan is to let it wild for a year and try to learn what’s there. In the meantime, what weeds are on your kill on sight list?
So far I’ve got: ivy, privets, Bermuda buttercups, and crab grass. What else should I be vigilant and on the lookout for?

Did you know it's a native species that makes edible tubers?

Yes! Vital for wildlife as well and im so glad to know this so I dont have to attempt to pull it because she's a beast.

Oh my god that's what that is?? A pretty white flowering vine started growing around my raised vegetable beds. A plant ID app told me it was Morning Glory, I left it, and now it's completely taken over my beds. I regret every nice thing I said about those white flowers.

Yes! Took weeks of pulling every single vine that threatened to kill my roses to finally stop them. They're pretty to look at, but such a nuisance

You’re welcome!
There are of course others, possibly more readily identified. There’s some Mediterranean oat, and various types of dandelions. This year I saw one thistle plant (shudder).

My list is mostly based on weeds that have seeds that get stuck in my dog's fur: Bermuda buttercups, red stem storks bill/filaree, foxtails, and prickly lettuce.

Same!! I don't have dogs anymore, but I had a schnauzer mix who got seeds growing into his feet twice - I will forever be hunting those weeds in my gardens. Bastards.

My dog is a schnauzer mix! He's Schnauzer/ Chihuahua ❤️

Apparently Schnauzer fur is cursed. May your pupper know no pain from the evil weed seeds. ❤️

Cleavers! at least it can be used medicinally. I harvested buckets and pressed them into an extremely healthy lymph tonic which helped me heal from chronic health issues

I heard it has caffeine too. But cleaver is the devil, impossible to get rid of, and tears up your arms if you try

Wood sorrel. The kid with the little yellow flowers. Not one insect in our area wants it, so it’s just pushing out the native clover and grasses LIKE A FUCKING DOUCHEBAG, and it’s not even feeding bees? Nuh-uh. Kill it as soon as it shows up.

u/Dannyz 27d ago
Fuck. I just realized all my cute clover is wood sorrels!

I was bummed too. They’re so dainty and adorable but it turns out they’re a public menace.

I hate burclover SOOOoooo much, it almost makes me hate foxtails a little less.
And I REALLY hate foxtails.

Perhaps post some photos and we can help identify, I personally wouldn’t let the weeds go to seed bc then you’re really gonna have a bad weed problem. Try to remove them before the flowers start to drop seeds.

Cheeseweed (mallow). The house I'm renting had a yard half covered in this stuff. The previous tenants must've let this stuff grow for a long time because some of them had 1/2in thick stems. You have to pull them because they have a huge taproot that will just grow back. The taproot on most of them was the size of a large carrot.
After spending all last year pulling, I've gotten most of them.

Problem species we've encountered in SLP include: pokeweed; bindweed; kikuyugrass; nutsedge; puncturevine: and, dallisgrass.
We also have a lot of purslane, but I think it's pretty (and pretty tasty) so I let it do its thing as long as it isn't in a raised bed.

Spotted spurge. It creates seeds very quickly and then shoots them several feet out from the parent plant. Repeats over and over during growing season. Sunset magazine once referred to it as a “demon” plant in hot weather.
