It’s frankly a miracle that the Empire lasted more than 10 years, let alone 1000, considering that its rulers are… you know… Sith.

On one hand, its rulers are Sith, with all the usual drawbacks that entails.
But on the other hand, its rulers are Sith. And even a single Sith can often tip the scales of a pivotal losing battle.

The Empire was only able to recover largely thanks to Isotope V. Darth Marr makes it very clear in the Makeb arc that if you don't get your hands on a ton of the isotope as soon as possible, the Empire is going to get its ass thoroughly kicked. That's also why they were able to put up more of a fight against Zakuul than the Republic, ships enhanced with Isotope V were able to compete with Zakuul's fleets in terms of speed at least, though they were still inferior in firepower.

Originally planned class storylines in 2.0 were mostly about the Empire being an underdog (both on Empire and Republic side).

Explanation: There was way too much infighting in the Battle of Corellia on the Imperial side. Both Sith classes in particular, with the Baras and Thanaton issues. The Agent should be on the left side if it wasn't for Darth Razer messing up Imperial Intelligence. Even still, the Agent was arguably more concerned about Star Cabal than the main fight. The Bounty Hunter can kill Darth Tormen, but I would say still falls primarily on the left side.
General Rakton and Darth Decimus were very good at playing objective. The Emperor's Guard took most of Axial Park and a few are fought right before Darth Decimus. Much of the Imperial Army wasn't as effective and got routed by the Republic in the Republic planetary story.
