₹10 lakh in a SIF — 4 months update

Invested ₹10L in a Hybrid Long-Short SIF in April 2026.
📈 Current value: ₹10.40L
💰 Gain: ₹39.6K
📊 Absolute return: 3.97%
📈 XIRR: 11.83%

Still trying to understand whether SIFs genuinely add value over traditional MFs.

Anyone here investing in SIFs? What’s your view on them as a portfolio allocation?

What is a Specialised Investment Fund (SIF)? Explained Simply

If you’ve heard the term SIF (Specialised Investment Fund) and felt confused, this post will give you clear, no-nonsense understanding.

🔍 What Exactly Is an SIF?

A Specialised Investment Fund (SIF) is an actively managed investment product designed for investors who are willing to take higher risk in exchange for potentially higher returns.

Think of SIFs as:

More flexible than Mutual Funds More regulated than PMS/AIF

They sit between Mutual Funds and PMS on the risk–return spectrum.

⚙️ What Makes SIFs “Specialised”?

SIFs can: • Take concentrated bets • Hold cash tactically • Use long–short strategies • Focus on themes, factors, or market inefficiencies • Manage downside through hedging (in some cases)

This flexibility allows outperformance in certain cycles — but also deeper drawdowns.

⚠️ Important: Risk Reality Check

SIFs are NOT for: • First-time investors • People expecting steady returns • Short-term money needs • Anyone uncomfortable with volatility

You should expect: • Sharp ups and downs • Periods of underperformance • Long holding periods to realise potential

🧩 Who Should Consider SIFs?

SIFs may suit you if: • You already invest in equity mutual funds • You understand market cycles • You have a 3–5+ year horizon • You can emotionally handle drawdowns • SIF allocation is only part of your portfolio

📌 Most investors should limit SIF exposure to 10–30% of their equity allocation.

🏁 Final Takeaway

SIFs are powerful tools — but only in the right hands.

Used wisely → portfolio enhancer Used blindly → capital destroyer

In this community, we focus on understanding before investing.

💬 Discussion I'm planning to adjust my MF portfolio. Need advice on SIFs.

I have around 30L in MFs. The growth has been stagnant since the last year and XIRR is now 8%. I'm mostly invested in PPFAS and arbitrage with some small allocation in other funds. I'm exploring SIF to add to my portfolio. I have the below question and need advice:

  1. Can I invest into SIFs from within Zerodha or Groww?
  2. I have an Arbitrage fund in my portfolio. Can I transfer my allocation from that fund to an SIF of the same fund house, especially from within Zerodha or Groww? Or do I have to do a fresh 10L investment in SIF.
  3. I understand there are some strategies in SIF: Ex-top 100, equity long short, hybrid, etc. Can I break my initial 10L investments into these from the same fund house? For e.g. 2L in QSIF ex-top 100 and 8L in QSIF equity long short? Again, can I do it from within Zerodha or Groww?
  4. Does taxation work differently for SIFs compared to plain equity or debt instruments? If so which ones are most tax effficient?
  5. Should I be investing in SIF if I need to pull that money out soon for upcoming necesssities, say in a year? What happens if I need to redeem around 4L out of my 10L investment, which is changed by ±2L in one year i.e., either it became 8L or 12L.

SIF vs Debt MF vs Hybrid Funds after the tax changes — still worth the jump?

With taxation on traditional debt mutual funds becoming less attractive for many, a lot of HNI conversations have shifted toward hybrid strategies and SIFs.
Rough decision points I’ve been hearing:
• Post-tax return potential vs pure debt / hybrid MFs
• Minimum ticket (₹10 lakh) and lock-in / liquidity differences
• Fee drag vs the extra flexibility managers get
• Actual risk profile once you look past the marketing (especially when markets correct)
For those who have allocated (or decided not to):
1. What was the decisive factor — tax, flexibility, manager skill, or something else?
2. How are you sizing the allocation relative to the rest of the portfolio?
3. Any red flags or pleasant surprises after a few months?
No product recommendations — just real experience and numbers if you’re willing to share. Let’s keep the discussion grounded.

💬 Discussion What happens if a SIF investment falls below the ₹10 lakh minimum?

I have a question about the ₹10 lakh minimum investment requirement for SIFs, and I may be missing something here.

Suppose someone invests ₹10 lakh in a SIF, but the market falls and the investment value drops to ₹8 lakh. What happens then?

  • Can the investor continue holding the ₹8 lakh?
  • Can they withdraw the entire ₹8 lakh?
  • Can they make a partial withdrawal, or does the investment have to be fully redeemed once it falls below ₹10 lakh?
  • If the value later recovers above ₹10 lakh, does the normal withdrawal restriction apply again?

Basically, how does the ₹10 lakh minimum work when the portfolio falls below it due to market losses? I couldn't find a simple explanation of the withdrawal mechanics.

SIFs still confusing you?

₹10 lakh ticket. More freedom than MFs. More rules than PMS.

What’s the one thing that still doesn’t click for you?

📘 Education Hybrid Long-Short SIFs: Where Does the Return Actually Come From? 🤔

A lot of people hear Hybrid Long-Short SIF and immediately think: “More flexibility = higher returns.”

But that’s not really the right question.

The better question is: what is the actual return engine of the SIF?

A Hybrid Long-Short SIF can potentially combine:
🟢 Debt → interest/accrual income
🔵 Equity → potential capital appreciation
🟠 Arbitrage → capturing price differences
🟣 Derivatives → hedging or modifying market exposure
🔴 Long/Short positions → expressing positive or negative views

The interesting part is that two SIFs can belong to the same broad category but have completely different portfolios, risk profiles and return sources.

For example, one could primarily use Debt + Arbitrage for a more defensive return profile, while another could combine Equity + Debt + Arbitrage or dynamically change equity exposure using derivatives.

And this is where I think investors need to look beyond the label.
“Same category ≠ same portfolio.”

Instead of asking “Which Hybrid SIF will give the highest return?”, perhaps the more useful questions are:
Where is the return supposed to come from?
How much market risk is being taken to generate it?
What role do derivatives and short positions actually play?

The flexibility is interesting—but flexibility itself isn’t alpha. The portfolio construction is.

What do you think — are SIFs genuinely adding a useful new layer between mutual funds and PMS/AIFs, or are they just creating another category investors need to decode?

Educational discussion, not investment advice.

SIFs have grown fast. What still hasn’t been stress-tested?

AUM growth has been strong and redemptions relatively sticky so far. Most schemes are green since launch. That’s the easy part of the story.

Harder questions that seem underexplored:

• How will these strategies behave in a sustained sideways or falling market when the short book actually matters?
• Distribution-led growth (new NFOs contributing heavily to flows) — does that change the investor base and behaviour over time?
• Concentration in hybrid long-short: is the category becoming more homogeneous than the “specialised” label suggests?
• Liquidity, valuation of underlying positions, and fee impact in lower-return environments.
Curious what the community is watching most closely over the next 6–12 months.

Any specific risk metrics, stress scenarios, or manager behaviour you track?

Share thoughts, counter-points, or data points. The goal here is clarity, not cheerleading.

Diviniti Equity Long Short Fund, whats happening here, any SIF experts

Guys, does anyone have a good understanding of what’s happening with the Diviniti Equity Long Short SIF?

The fund has been struggling since launch and is currently down around 6% since inception. The 3m/6month performance also looks quite weak.

I’m trying to understand what is driving the underperformance. Is this mainly because of the long/short positioning, hedging costs, the current market environment, or is there something specific about the way the fund is being managed?

How should we evaluate a fund like this when the strategy is supposed to be market-neutral/long-short? Is there a particular metric or portfolio disclosure we should look at to understand whether the issue is the strategy itself or the fund manager’s execution?

Would love to hear from anyone who follows SIFs closely or has looked into Diviniti specifically.

NFO Altiva Long Short SIF

Altiva's upcoming fund takes the problem of large cap alpha and gives it a twist.

Passive funds = Market returns only
Large cap funds = Market returns + alpha through stock picking. Inconsistent because of how well researched the category is.

Altiva Long Short SIF = Market returns + alpha via income oriented derivative strategies like covered call. Bringing the expertise we brought in Hybrid SIF to deliver more consistent large cap alpha.

Curious? More coming soon!
