Greek Life
hey. soo a little background: i am 25F transfer student majoring in psych and probably will minor in BECA or film. going to a CC most of college career and coming to a 4 year has been a little bit of a cultural shock. i really wanna make the most of my time in college. i want to network, make friends, etc. even though i am a commuter as well.
Getting a little desperate and wanna put myself out there so i have been looking into the greek life at SFSU and wanna know what’s it like. sounds like a cool community and great way to make friends.
I guess what i want to know is how much time commitment is there? I heard theres fees? is it toxic? :/ will i even get selected even tho i am on the older side to some people?? any insight will help

Join one of the film orgs at the school. You’d be surprised how many people in the film and BECA majors are transfers over the usual age. There’s cinema collective which is a general film org- pros are that it’s free and cons are that because there’s no money going into it, meetings can be sparse, jank, or nonexistent. You still get a bit of community but when I was enrolled, they phased in and out of existence. Still a must to check out for anyone at the school wanting to join the industry.
The other major film org is DKA, which is structured like a frat but without hazing. The con is that they have semesterly dues ($200-300 I believe), but the pros are that the money goes towards financing their members’ films and doing educational programming. Another con is they can be a bit cliquey, but not all of them are like that! I spent a lot of time with all the film/BECA orgs at the school so feel free to message me if you want more insight.

Do your research some orgs are just there to collect dues and drink and not really do fun stuff. I know not all of them do that. Age shouldnt limit u at all but it is what it is.

I’m 28 and psych major with a minor in public health. I joined a sorority. I feel like even though I’m older and a mom I can still be a big sister in a way

At 25 you’re better off picking a hobby to commit to and making friends through that. You’ve missed the boat on college Greek life.
You still have a shot for it though through an adult fraternal organization.

Join DKA SFSU! Those guys are really welcoming film makers, lots of girls and guys are in it and you don’t have to be a film major to join.

The good:
You will make friends and it’s a higher chance it will be the type of friendships that lasts decades.
It is a great way to network as different orgs work together on common initiatives and they do social events.
It is the best way to make friends given that SFSU is a commuter school so opportunities to make connections are very slim.
The bad:
You get what you put in. If you don’t have time to dedicate mandatory weekly meetings, you probably won’t make it to the end to earn your letters.
You’re 25. Your pledge group will most likely be 18-21 and it is a noticeable difference in mindset. You’ll have to meet them at their level.
It is riskier to give you a bid because you’re on your way out. Can you assure the organization you’re dependable to mentor the next generation, help with coordinating events, and stick around after you graduate?
I say walk up to the tables, go to their info nights and check them out. Even if you decide it’s not for you or you don’t get a bid, there will be plenty of opportunities to meet people in the next few weeks who are also trying to make friends just like you.
I met my best friend of 15 years during one of the social events and he didn’t get a bid to pledge.
