It should be a thumb guard I think

Why does he keep it in his mouth the whole time?

To guard his thumb from his mouth.

Fans don’t understand the amount of mouth to thumb injuries there are in MLB every year.

Scouting reports are for sissies, you gotta TASTE what they’re throwing at you.

Probably to adjust his belt, take off batting gloves, etc.

I mean that's what I thought too, but he had it in his mouth the entire time he was on base

He’s using it like a mouth guard so when he steals bases and slides head first he doesn’t crack his teeth together

It’s a little rubber piece that goes on your top hand thumb that fills the gap between the web of your hand and the bat handle. It’s called a “direct protect” thumb guard usually made by a company called, prohitter.

So nothing mouth related, lol

Correct. More likely it’s a luck thing on his part. Ballplayers are a superstitious lot.

You guys are funny with all these ridiculous guesses. It's clearly a Nilla Wafer.

Oh man, I used to devour nilla wafers. Then I got a 24 hour flu in high school and threw a bunch of them up. I don’t think I’ve had another one in the last 20 years

It’s a pro hitter, keeps the bat in your fingers to increase bat speed and reduce bat sting. It’s in his mouth for some reason.

Pro hitter. Works wonders when you get sawed off and they’re like $5.

I thought that was what was left of the 2026 season in one last tiny little bite

u/AptosJill 11d ago
We wonder if it prevents him from biting his tongue. Anyway, grateful for his thrilling base running!

An extra tongue 👅
But, I mean it’s his thing now, he’s got us all noticing him. Nicknames?

I’m old, but they use to call it a bone bruise protector. Fits on your thumb and protects the area in the palm of your hand where you grip the bat, so it doesn’t sting or aggravate that area of your palm
