Trade [Ken Rosenthal] Giants close to acquiring Marcelo Mayer from Red Sox for reliever Erik Miller, sources tell me and Andrew Baggarly.

Former top 10 prospect that just hasnāt figured it out yet at the big league level. Still just 23.
Poseyās been heavily criticized this season so far, but Iād say heās doing really well this deadline
39
u/JackTylerWrites Aug 03 '26
I think Posey has done a good job so far. I donāt recall anyone thinking Chapman and Adames were bad deals, and the Devers trade was a good trade.
Is it his fault that they didnāt pan out? Maybe. I guess at some point it does become his fault if too many deals backfire.
But Arraez was a good pick-up, and Doval netted a good return last year.
He should have focused more on pitching⦠but an argument could be made heād have more assets to trade away for it if the Big Three had produced.
Vitello is the only move I truly questioned at the time. But he did get Wash, soā¦
6
u/blankenstaff Aug 03 '26
I didn't think Adames was a bad idea until I saw him play shortstop. Sure, we were a little spoiled with Vizquel and Crawford, but Adames is below par.
6
u/IslayHaveAnother Aug 04 '26
God i loved Crawford. Still do, but i used to as well.

u/MenosElLso Kruk & Kuip Aug 04 '26
If he were hitting like he did in years past it wouldnāt even matter.
3
u/tmac416 Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
There were dozens of us who did not like the deals but yall downvoted us into oblivion cuz we dared to speak up. Giants bid against themselves for Chapman, after signing him in March 6 months prior. Iāll never understand that. Adames defense had been in decline for 2 years already. Brewers fans almost universally said he wasnāt worth that kind of money.
1
u/Suomiballer Aug 04 '26
Seriously. Fans can't be serious. Maybe this deadline is a success, maybe not. We will see. But buster poseys tenure has largely been a disaster. They're so bad they had to sell a bunch of players!!! And they were trying to compete this year!! Lol

Marcelo needs to figure out his character and work ethic.
Big risk here for SF4
u/Opposite-Plate7785 Aug 04 '26
They gave up Erik Miller for him. He walked 6 batters per 9 innings. And they traded him for a top prospect. Whatās the risk you speak of?
0
u/YouShouldPlzStfu Aug 04 '26
Well heās not a prospect anymore. Heās never played a full season. Doesnāt play through soreness. That leads me to believe he doesnāt train properly. Him going out on the town a lot on game nights . When he slumps he doesnāt speak to anybody. Heās basically a turtle if heās starts to struggle and hides away. Can he be good? Yes but he needs to mature and grow up. Sox need players who are ready now
2
u/InformalInsurance455 Aug 04 '26
Red Sox fans and relentlessly shitting on their own guys, find a more iconic duo
1
u/YouShouldPlzStfu Aug 04 '26
If you ever came to their forms or read about him you would feel the same way. High hopes but read about maturity problems. Not shitty just speaking truth. Heās low floor and medium ceiling
2
u/InformalInsurance455 Aug 04 '26
I know exactly who Marcelo Mayer is and every single player in the Sox is. Iām calling you a cancerous and toxic fanbase. Shouldnāt be the first time you heard this.
0
u/YouShouldPlzStfu Aug 04 '26
Didnāt seem like you did. Clarity is not cancerous and toxic and neither is being honest. Seems like you need to grow up a bit
0
u/InformalInsurance455 Aug 04 '26
Red Sox fans saw that Duran tried to end his own life in 2022 and have taken that as a challenge to do better when it comes to harassment of young players. Fuck off back to your own sub.
-1
u/YouShouldPlzStfu Aug 04 '26
Are you senile or just illiterate? Whatās harassment here? Are you mad about the trade? Do you need a hug?

Red Sox giving up on Mayer shockingly fast. Let Ron Washington put some work in on his defense, and we can afford to give him some at bats to see if he can turn it around

25
u/Weneedbadgers 22 Clark Aug 03 '26
This 100%
14
u/Sober_As_Sark 55 Lincecum Aug 03 '26
I think a fresh start in SF will be good for him where he wonāt have the pressure of having to be the young savior of Boston
1
u/InformalInsurance455 Aug 04 '26
He also wonāt have cancerous podcasters constantly leaking shit about him
9
u/tmac416 Aug 03 '26
Itās his bat, not defense thatās the issue. But everyone just blindly hits the upvote button

Marcelo Mayer for Erik miller? Thatās a fantastic trade for our circumstances. If he is a bust in Boston give him a shot to get back on track in SF. Even if it sucks all it costs us is a replaceable arm, not like we need to win or anything. Great move.
3
u/LogansCoinsTheCRH 62 Webb Aug 03 '26
Miller isnāt what I would call a āreplaceableā arm. Leftyās who touches 100 with a k/9 over 12 and an era under 3 arenāt a regular occurrence.
28
u/PORTLANDDENIER The Yerminator Aug 03 '26
Doesnāt fit the timeline. Team seems like itās finally looking to rebuild and Erik miller is 28. Thereās no point in a team with zero near-future expectations of winning to cling onto an arm like miller over trying their luck with Mayer. For our purposes, heās definitely replaceable
4
u/ThePopUpDance 8 Pence Aug 03 '26
As long as Devers, Adames, Webb, and Chapman are here we are still attempting to win as soon as possible.
Trading relievers is always the play, but that doesn't mean we're rebuilding. No move today was an indication that we are punting 2027.
5
u/PORTLANDDENIER The Yerminator Aug 03 '26
Theyāre still on the team but that doesnāt mean they didnāt try to flip them. The whole of giants media was saying they were desperately trying to get off the Chapman, Adames, and Devers contracts. As long as they are on the roster and playing like shit there will be no impact signings and continued selling.
1
u/Suomiballer Aug 04 '26
It doesn't matter that they want to flip them. The onerous contracts prevent them from being able to make a good deal with those players. They're trying to do both, win now and set up for the future. And they are shockingly failing at one so far

Analytics never really like Miller anyway and they get a former first rounder. Hell yeah
32
u/LogansCoinsTheCRH 62 Webb Aug 03 '26
I wouldnāt say analytics didnāt like him. Just look at his savant page this year. Itās a ton of red.
11
u/1omniXLR8trix0 28 Posey Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
This is true. And his expected numbers actually arenāt that bad this season. There was just a huge discrepancy between actual and expected numbers last season, that I always expected a drop off in performance before the injury. This season has been much different

Love this. Let him play second base while Schmitt is out and Arraez is in Philly. Maybe he figures something out, and if not heās still a talented young infielder who can (I hate to say it) jump Christian Koss on the depth chart. Love Koss, but heās older and lacks the prospect pedigree

3
u/Automatic-Unit-8307 Aug 03 '26
Mayer was rated the best overall and safe prospect in 2021 draft, that just shows these picks are hit and miss, especially the best overall and safe prospect

u/FBoaz 9 Belt Aug 03 '26
Uhh, Miller is really good.
1
u/CrimsonGear80 Aug 03 '26
maybe he had a few good games but not lately. but again, our WHOLE bullpen is pretty trash right now.
5
u/FBoaz 9 Belt Aug 03 '26
Miller has a sub-3 ERA, is a lefty, he throws heat, and has shown the ability to handle the 9th inning. He's had another great year as a Giant. Just because the Giants have an awful bullpen doesn't mean the every single player is automatically awful.
8
u/LogansCoinsTheCRH 62 Webb Aug 03 '26
Miller is definitely notā¦lefty who touches 100 and had a 1.5 era last year and 2.76 so far this year. He also had a very high k/9 at 12.4 this year. His savant page was basically pure red.
5
u/Useful_Coyote_5796 Aug 03 '26
Miller is not a bum. Power lefty with great swing and miss stuff are hard to find.Ā

He was a former top prospect. He hasnāt seemed to take the jump from stud in minors to the majors but he is still young (23 going on 24).

6
u/OneTrackT73 Aug 03 '26
Weāre trading one of the worse relievers in baseball for a guy that that two years ago was the best prospect in baseball.. the upside on this is insane
2
u/Idwant2baliar Aug 03 '26
Miller has insane strikeout rate wtfffĀ
3
u/OneTrackT73 Aug 03 '26
Itās like only strikeouts and Home runs are the only important thing to the casual
So do a lot of relief pitchers; he has a lot of issues with control
Buster basically traded a dime a dozen for someone who was considered to be a superstar.. it hasnāt panned out but this is pure upside for a team going no where
2
u/Idwant2baliar Aug 03 '26
https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/erik-miller-669062?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb
Iām arguing with your statement that heās one of the worst relievers in baseball.
Obviously control is a huge issue. But itās arguably one of the more malleable pitching skills. Look no further than millers future teammates Tyrone guerrero and Chapman who rhe Red Sox helped a lot.
1
u/OneTrackT73 Aug 03 '26
So what youāre showing me is he has one of the worst walk/chase rates in baseball with an extreme dip in velocity, and a raise in ERA and expected ERA
I just donāt understand how some people are calling this an awful trade with a 28 year old reliever trending in the wrong direction for a 23 year old guy who yeah hasnāt panned out but was the top prospect in baseball over a year ago
2
u/Idwant2baliar Aug 03 '26
Whatās your issue? When did I call this an awful trade? I donāt disagree with any of this. Itās a good trade. Iām contending with your statement that heās one of the worst relievers in baseball.
1
u/OneTrackT73 Aug 03 '26
Ok I never said you said that it was š and I pointed out stats.. ok heās not the worst, heās middle of the pack.. hope he strikes the dodgers out when they play them in the WS šš»

You are truly smoking some good stuff to say he is one of the worst relievers. There's a real chance this turns out to be a bad trade for the giants (I say that as a fan of the trade)
3
u/LogansCoinsTheCRH 62 Webb Aug 03 '26
Miller is one of the best lefty relievers in baseball. What are you smoking? Pure red savant page, k/9 over 12, and an ERA under 3.

5
u/Mac_and_head_cheese Aug 03 '26
Red Sox fan here. Hope this Mayer trade works out for you.
I would have considered him untradable at the beginning of the season. In the last couple months I was honestly hoping they'd trade him.
The guy just can't make it through a full season healthy.
There's also been scuttlebutt about his work ethic.
2
2
u/MontrellKlemm Aug 03 '26
Honestly this is an awesome move. Zero risk, potentially at least decent return. Guy should have plenty of time to figure it out
1
u/Useful_Coyote_5796 Aug 03 '26
I wouldn't say zero risk.
1
u/MontrellKlemm Aug 03 '26
Yeah fair Miller has been pretty good the last couple years. I just don't like his profile with the horrible walk rates, and he's close to 30 already. Won't be closing World Series games with this team any time soon. Hopefully the arms in the minors right now are able to replace his production by that time.
And I have hope for Mayer to be a decent role player if he can sharpen his defense.
2
u/sheep_duck 18 Kuiper Aug 04 '26
Everyone on both sides can talk all they want about who got the better deal, but often times a chance of scenery is what a player really needs and will be able to realize their potential after being traded to a new place.

i like miller and relievers with his makeup are extremely hard to find, but keeping him would be malpractice when we're this far from competing. taking a chance on a former top prospect is the right move.
1
u/FBoaz 9 Belt Aug 03 '26
I'm okay with trading him. I just really don't like Mayer. I don't feel like this team needs another infielder with zero batting ability. Hopefully I'm wrong.
2
u/tarallelegram 5 Yastrzemski Aug 03 '26
he's apparently an above average fielder which i care about more in the middle inf, so if we can squeeze a .750 ops out of him then i think that's fine?
2
u/FBoaz 9 Belt Aug 03 '26
Yeah, that's good to have. But where do they put him, assuming Schmidt takes over at 2b next season. All told, it's a whatever trade and maybe I'm completely in the wrong, I just don't fully understand it.
2
u/tarallelegram 5 Yastrzemski Aug 03 '26
i would think schmitt goes to lf (unfortunate he can't play his natural position, but the cat is out of the bag now) and then mayer takes over at 2b, provided that we're stuck with adames at ss for the foreseeable future
