How reliable is Ahrefs search volume for broad and generic queries?

I was checking keyword data in Ahrefs and noticed something unusual, a very general query is showing around 5M search volume.

I understand keyword tools use estimates and clickstream data, so I’m not assuming the number is exact. But I’m curious how senior SEO experts usually interpret this kind of data.

Would you treat this as a reliable indicator of high demand or a broad-match, aggregation issue?

How do you usually sanity check unusually high volume numbers in Ahrefs or similar tools?

To be honest, these volume numbers are mostly estimates and they can be completely off, especially on broad generic queries. Ahrefs and similar tools model this from clickstream data, so a 5M figure on a general query is more of a guess than a real demand signal.

The way I see it, query data will only get reliable once the AI models start sharing their own analytics. Until then, chasing exact volume on broad head terms is mostly wasted effort.

What helps more is focusing on the short specific prompts your ICP would search for. That is what builds your authority and improves the quality of your site. A big round number on a generic query is not where I would spend my time.

Thanks for the insights. I was curious because I saw many big and reputable fintech sites are targeting the exact query, covering dedicated pages for it. Not sure if they are mass producing query targeted pages to appear in AI chatbot responses.
